I actually believe that FBS is the majority position now among both serious and casual NDSU fans. Unfortunately, I still think we may have missed the boat by waiting too long. Most of the stories about realignment do not even mention NDSU. And we still have no public statement that NDSU definitively would like to go FBS. Imagine a press conference in which ML lays out all the reasons why NDSU would be a good catch for any FBS conference and dispels all the myths and weak arguments against such a move. Fans of other conferences and sports writers would take note and start thinking out loud about the possibilities. But we haven't done that. That's on the administration. I very much hope we are looking at legal options for going FBS independent as a backup plan. FCS sucks; we don't belong in FCS any longer. No one will ever convince me otherwise.

NDSU recruits way less three star recruits than most G5 teams, not saying our recruits are not talented but they are not as top rated. Just because we steal a couple recruits from P5 teams doesn’t mean we out recruit G5 /P5 teams as a whole. This isn’t a slam dunk like you assume it will be.
At least you are not as crazy to think we are to get a NY6 bowl with USC……

If this administration would have had any backbone or foresight, they wouldn't have even had to have been real frontal with their desire to move up. After Appy and Georgia Southern and Coastal all moved up they could have made a statement saying they were disappointed to lose competition and other schools that have provide solid competition. And that if more schools are going to make that jump then NDSU needs to take a serious look at doing the same or risk being in a situation similar to the one they left when they made the jump from D2.

Perhaps if their wasn’t a full frontal assault on higher education in general and NDSU specifically from Bismarck the administration could have made this a more public priority sooner?

Will the full on assault involve closing down 96 of the 100 colleges in this state of about 790k? Asking for a friend.

Well even if keeping the redundant schools open didn't help the outstate districts, it takes money away from NDSU so they'd keep them open anyways. To Audit's point.
Further to his point, I wonder if the Bresciani situation changes anything with the University's prerogative to piss off (or not piss off) the SBOHE. Not like we have a president they can fire at this point, but we may be hamstrung from defending ourselves if they pull some sheister move and reduce our funding if we were to get uppity and want better for ourselves.

But we have to remember there are plenty of NDSU fans (not just of football, but of the university) across the state. We are the extension university. The NDSU logo is on a sign and on an office door somewhere in every county of North Dakota. We have leverage. The people of North Dakota want NDSU to be successful, regardless of what a couple dipshits from Minot think.

Yeah, and how has that worked for us so far? Reality is, NDSU is in a county that a strong majority outside of that county dislike. Not trying to start a wild ND political tangent, but that's the reality.
It's not supposed to make sense, it's radical politics. Help from the state is not coming and likely never will.

Maybe not help from the state, but the university can make some decisions rooted in what's best for the university and should have some pull to defend those decisions. For the record, imperial Cass County probably deserves some of the resentment it receives from other parts of the state (and I live in Cass County). But NDSU belongs to the entire state and, unlike UND or any other university, it has a literal footprint in every county of North Dakota.

I’m not going to say I get my info from unbiased sources but it seems to me that every time NDSU has tried to do something in its best interest in 15 years it gets pushback from Bismarck. You’re right, and in principal it’s the people’s university, but that doesn’t have much currency in the capitol.
And if “decide what’s best for the university” means going FBS, I can imagine many outside cass (aka: the voting majority in a majority of districts outside cass) are not going to like it.
I still think we go FBS. Because fuck them, that’s why.

again, if we were FBS that all changes, what the fuck don't you understand about that? We are getting 3 star kids regularly as an FCS, if we were FBS we would definitely be able to regularly pull our current top recruits all the time and at more positions. The C is holding us back nothing else, not Facilities, Fargo, the country side or any other things you can come up with

"The Knight Commission also presented to the constitutional committee its proposal for a new governing entity for the sport of FBS football, one separate from the NCAA."
Working with the NCAA-reform committee it appears.
So I guess the $20M question becomes (per Bruin's post the other say): how many current G5 FB programs would bolt back to FCS if FBS became formally unaffiliated with the NCAA? P5 will piss and moan but at the end of they day they will follow the $$ and leave.
Then there's this: https://www.cbssports.com/college-fo...n-realignment/
Dodd claiming AAC will poach MWC bigtime ....

The AAC poaching 3-4 teams from the MWC would be the most likely path for NDSU to get a MWC invite. They may be able to bring SDSU with them for a travel partner. Montana, Montana St, Weber St would have to battle it out for the remaining spots….

What G5 teams is NDSU going steal recruits from to out compete them in Florida/TX/AZ? NDSU gets the top recruits already in MN and WI that UM and UW don’t already get. NDSU isn’t going to steal recruits from the Big 10 anymore than we do already….

That Dodd article is quite interesting!
Quite a strategy, if it comes to pass, to try and
poach the Mountain West before the Big 12 can……
Does the Big 12 accelerate their timetable to get at least 2 of them?
Now would Montana & Montana State be interested?

I don’t see any Big Sky teams turning down a MWC invite unless you are EWU. Does the Big 12 want any of those MWC teams outside of Air Force, Boise or Colorado State? Not sure any of the other teams bring enough to the B12. It’s going to be interesting to see what happens!

Sarcastic or not, this is not true. The same quality level of recruits would certainly not choose NDSU. That said, I am dubious that FBS designation gets any better recruits than today. Kids want to play for winners, not perennial 7-5 wannabes. Even so, I am in favor of going FBS despite the likelihood of a Crap Bowl purgatory most years. Recruiting would have to substantially improve to prevent that scenario.

The city of Tulsa barely cares about U of Tulsa, but they have over $1B in their endowment fund which is pretty rich for many universities much less a 3200 student university. Money is the only reason any D1 conference pays any attention to them.

What is probably happening is this: ML may well realize now that we need to be in FBS and that he should have been working in that direction since the Iowa victory, when everyone in the country thought we should be in FBS. But he and Bresciani sat on it and squandered that widespread sentiment. Now ML is scrambling to find a seat during the latest game of musical chairs-realignment edition. And with our last FBS victory a distant memory and our poor showing during the fake season last year at the football kiddie table, he's got no where to sit.

Not to debate with myself, but there is a major flaw with my speculation above. It isn't necessarily true that ML is scrambling to get us into FBS. There's certainly no publicly visible push for it, so to say he's scrambling to get us a seat at the table is probably too optimistic.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
It's pretty obvious that a lot of this stuff happens behind closed doors. Look at OU/Texas nobody knew about that until it was essentially public. I agree with PL56 on this take. That all said NDSU still needs to insert ourselves into a situation that benefits NDSU and not just a sideways translation but end up having to pay $$ to get the supposed "glamour" of FBS. I don't know that many of those opportunities have existed since say ~2014 is last time any big name schools made the move (IIRC). Still could be weird things that happen with the Big 12 or even the other P5 conferences. They all say one thing publicly but no doubt there is much going on behind closed doors and phone calls right now.
I just hope if this involves a move to FBS that NDSU does it because of benefits and not to just be able to say we're in the FBS now, feel like there are a couple conferences out there that would basically be all it entails.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
Wouldnt shock me if the MWC schools stayed pat. AAC isnt much of a step up now losing Cincy, UCF, Houston. MWC should expand adding NDSU and UTSA.

Texas/OU are NOT NDSU.
NDSU has to be a hard sell, you gotta be soliciting and NDSU hasn't done it. too fucking bashful or prideful is my guess.
the biggest factor is. MATT LARSON is from shitty ass Stony Brook. he feels like he's the luckiest man on earth to take over the car on cruise control.
Dean has been thinking about retiring 5 years now.
there has been zero urgency from these 2.
.that's why NDSU hasn't been solicited & sold!!

If NDSU is going, I see SDSU doing everything they can to go as well. They aren't small-minded.
