I guess for a small minority it might be. It was for me when I was getting recruited. The main thing is that our campus isn't moving so it's not like the home games and/or actual campus will be any further away from mom and dad's... I think probably more important items for kids making the decision are:
Familiarity with the school
Familiarity with the other schools in the conference
Is an FBS-caliber cities kid going to pick some MVFC school over NDSU because NDSU is no longer playing UNI? Mmm probably not. Those kids are still going to be super familiar with the school. You could make the argument that Illinois parents will have a tougher time getting to a few away games, but outside of that it's incredibly negligible.
If anything, the MW would open us up to kids who are not currently familiar or very aware of what we have at NDSU. Our recruiting brand and presence in the midwest is already super strong and I don't see that changing because we're not playing in Macomb and Terre Haute anymore.

It's not a factor for everyone student athlete, but it is for many. FBS G5 won't change that significantly from FCS. Get to P5, and it's less of a factor, but it can still be a factor if the schools are similar. For example, if someone at my son's is offered at Georgia Tech and Purdue, they likely choose Purdue. But if they are offered at Alabama and Purdue, they likely choose Alabama.

Yup you nailed it.
Just like conference affiliation, geography is always important.

What similar schools are we going to be going up against for a kid from the Twin Cities? You're telling me a kid from the Twin Cities, Wisconsin, Nebraska, etc. is going to pick Northern Illinois or Ball State over NDSU because their away games are against Buffalo and the Michigan directionals vs. Colorado State and the California schools?
If parents are wanting to go to the 4 away conference games every year, they're going to almost all be flights in either direction. Is this really going to be what changes a kids' mind? If it's that big of a deal, schedule an NIU, Ball State, Michigan directional every year in non-con. It's probably going to happen anyways in reality.
Or are you saying we're going to lose out on kids to UNI and W Ill, Ill State, etc. because kids would rather play their road games in the Valley footprint? That's the only way the geography of conference affiliation changes drastically in this parents' travel scenario you are mentioning.

It probably doesn't impact Minnesota recruits as much because they are close to the home games. More likely impacts recruits from Wisconsin, Iowa, Missouri. Maybe Nebraska. If the Bison go MAC, they maybe recruit Chicago, Indy, Detroit, Ohio a little more. If they go MWC, the focus would be more Denver and west.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
NDSU in the Mountain West would be Heaven for Recruiting!!
NDSU gets the FBS tag, they can compete with MN/WI/IOWA for bigger and better local recruits
NDSU 100% trumps all the FCS schools (right now we are at 85-90% Id guess)
FURTHERMORE.. with the PORTAL.. NDSU can use the MVFC/Dakota schools as our Minor Leagues, if you become a star at those schools, you automatically can move up to NDSU and the big leagues!
parents can fly its what they do.
Re: A new and better FBS thread
NDSU will still be competing more against SDSU than those schools you mentioned when they go.
And by the way, if you're so concerned about "labels" and kids seeing "FBS", then it's a no brainer those kids will choose B1G or B12 over MWC. It is the label they are chasing after all is what we're told.

Yeah I would think the chief recruiting benefit would against regional peers, not against MN, WI, IA/IA St./ NE.

You may be right, but sort of hope not. We won't win many P5 games with SDSU level recruits.
Hopefully, we would win recruiting battles against MWC/G5 schools also. Top G5 talent can sometimes win P5 games.
