Tough to justify paying money to watch NDSU kick people's teeth in every week when the perception is that these teams don't belong on the same field as NDSU.
Then people need to vote with there voice and back it up with their wallets .

Happens with every fan base. People move on for many different reasons. We are not immune.

They are backing it up with their wallets by not paying triple or even quadruple prices for games to see teams that don't even fully fund their programs.

The minot state beavers game isn't even on TV eh. Always a good t shirt around when you play the beavers. Probably won't even listen for free on the radio for this one eh.

Nobody would rather see Misery State, Western Illinois, South Dakota, and Indiana State every 2 years instead of...
Air Force, Colorado State, San Diego State, and Wyoming.
It's not even close. So we lose the playoffs. The first 2 playoff games have been cupcake teams and fans aren't even selling them out unless it's vs a good team.
Mountain West Championship Game is in Arlington Texas
Bowl GAME
Let's do it.
Just a reminder about Boise State, since they aren’t on this list. (12 team Mountain West)
iirc The Big 12 tv contract expires after the 2025 season, so that will be the last possible date Texas & Oklahoma are still in the Big 12. There are substantial early departure penalties Texas & Oklahoma may not want to pay. Perhaps an early departure gets negotiated……
Then the Big 12 is back down to 12 teams. Do they stay at 12?
Have seen some interesting 16 team super conference ideas for them, especially since they are fighting to remain a P5 conference and get that next P5 style tv conference. It may be less than the other 4, but is still way more than the AAC currently gets per school.
Of course Boise would jump at the chance of Big 12 membership and would love to be a travel partner to BYU.
Is that what the Big 12 wants?
South Florida would give the Big 12 two Florida teams.
Is that what the Big 12 wants?
Other Mountain West teams may end up as targets of Big 12 expansion in a few years.
Colorado State?
San Diego State?
UNLV?
Cincinnati, Central Florida, Houston & BYU.
Getting those 1st four recruits really helped the Big 12.
Those four were head and shoulders above the rest.
The next 4, should that happen, will be very interesting……but the Big 12 has many choices……

I think the difference here is that 19K would be in the dome every weekend if NDSU wasn't playing Little Sisters of the Poor.

Year imagine playing with the big boys and having to schedule meaningful games. Exactly why ndsu can't get a big game now. Nothing to gain by beating ndsu everything to lose.

Fails to point out NDSU at #66
Not sure that's the right metric tho for what should really be just FB

I think it would help a lot. Losing to a G5 doesn't look nearly as bad as losing to an FCS. There is a weird binary way that many view FBS vs. FCS. They look at it like heads vs. tails. Izzo is guilty of this...he bases rankings and playoff seed projections on "FBS wins" when we all know lower G5 teams are weaker than upper level FCS teams. I think it's a lazy way of looking it things, personally.
If only there was an objective tool to rank all DI teams based on hard data :) If there was, people would probably ignore it :) :)

Would definitely bring back some juice just for the change of scenery. Would need to keep winning for it to continue past a certain point though.

I would agree with this. Just the FBS label alone would bring in more fans (not sell out but numbers would go up). Throw in the new teams and im pretty sure interest would go through the roof.

So NDSU should have been playing in the Big Sky???? Higher level of competition is the only benefit of playing in the MWC. Don’t get me wrong the west is beautiful, but nothing about traveling west is easy. Less preparation time each road week as more time is needed to travel that far west. UND learned it’s lesson about playing out west every week……..

Will excitement stay that high if NDSU isn’t winning championships every year? How long before the fan base gets bored again? If NDSU went FBS the reward for a good season is a no name bowl game. Might be cool for fans at first but how long until fans miss being the beat team in the nation? I think we are seeing what happens when fans get bored of winning but will it be any better if we start losing?

Honestly I think when you win that many in the row a lot of people lose interest in general. I don't think "staying to win championships against teams like Eastern Washington or Jacksonville (not a) State" is a compelling argument.
My dad was a lifelong Bison fan and in his last years even he was missing games and just assuming we'd beat the competition by 20. He really only tuned in for the JMU games. I'm sure a lot of more casual fans are like that.

Do you think it will get better if we stay at the FCS level and start losing? If we are FBS and even at the low end of it, there is no place to go but up. We are at the top of the FCS and do be honest, there is no place but down regardless if we win or lose.

This is exactly correct. This is as clear as it can be said.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
I didn't bother buying championship tix when they went on sale this year. Our group also decided we aren't going to bother going if NDSU makes it. How many times can you expect a fan base to go to the same town for the same game? For me apparently 8 was the limit. I will cheer the team on and continue to go to home games but I can tell you it gets easier and easier each year to miss games and not think twice about it.

I'm just going to keep this copied in a txt file on my desktop at this point so I can repost it in situations like this (posted this two pages ago):
The “meaningless bowl game” argument is such a sneaky straw man setup. If we stay FCS, we get to play for championships. If we move up to FBS we now have to automatically assume we are worse and go 7-5 every year? As has been noted for almost a decade now, the MAC and MW are slight steps up from the MVFC. And increase in level of play is probably less than the benefits we see from increased recruiting and additional scholarships. The argument just doesn’t make sense to me. Our teams the last 10 years that have been playing for FCS championships would've been playing for MWC championships and a prestigious bowl game. Not NYE, but not some crap bowl either. Moving forward it's looking like our teams could potentially be playing for a NYE bowl or even better.
In a successful year, would you rather: 1) Win the MVFC, make the FCS championship and win the FCS championship or 2) Win the MW, win the MW championship game and make a NYE bowl (with an apparent chance at the G5 seed in a 12 team playoff)
In a down year, would you rather: 1) go 6-2 in the MVFC, make the playoffs, get bounced in the quarters/semis or 2) go 5-3 in the MW, make a bowl game
IMO it's incorrect to make the argument that if we move up, we're all the sudden a worse team and finishing in the middle of the MW, but if we stay FCS we get to just automatically continue the dynasty.

well, NDSU would be using the airport 3 minutes from Campus unlike UND who had 150 mile roundtrip....that sure helps
and yes they did fly out of Fargo for BB, VB, ect as I was travelling a lot at the time and seen them frequently

Im in the same boat....holding onto season tickets just to see if something changes and keep my Tailgate spots. I fully admit I tailgated and 10 minutes before time to go in I packed up and went home, by the time I got to my garage and mixed a cocktail they were already up 7-0

Recruiting would also be critical. I don't expect we would be as successful in Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri. Some of the Twin Cities recruits may not want to play all their road games in the West. We could be successful recruiting in Colorado, Utah, California, Washington but that's a risk.
I believe NDSU will eventually be in what is currently a G5 conference sooner than later. Curious to see where they land.

FBS fatigue……

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Your point being that you think the G5 is irrelevant to FBS? Would they agree with you? Cuz that's what it's going to take to get them to leave it behind ...

You are right there there is no place but to go up if we get into the G5, but we also run the risk of becoming an ordinary program in the sea of G5 team. Ordinary in the second tier of FBS would be a disaster. What are the chances of being at the top of G5? 50/50? Could we really out recruit Boise St or Coastal Carolina? Honestly not with Entz and T Roehl

NDSU could get a seat in a New Years Six bowl game but what are the chances of that? There is big competition at the top of the G5 so are we going to out recruit them and bring in top recruits to Fargo? Fargo is not impressive at the G5 level…..

Could be wrong, but if I had to guess I'd say probably the same odds as winning two or three FCS championships back to back... What were the odds we were going to win 8 of 9 FCS championships when we moved up from D2 in 2004?
The recruits we bring in now are already end up competing at the level of the good G5 schools. Hence why none of them will play us anymore?

Do you think NDSU could have beaten Coastal Carolina or Kansas State last year/ with the spring team? Honestly they haven’t proven they could beat them this year. I’m worried about the SDSU game this year as we might get embarrassed…..

I know you're just trolling but I'll bite anyways. You're correct, we will never be better than the worst team we've had in 12 years. Let's fold up shop.
How could we ever have won 8 of 9 FCS championships after we went 2-8 in 2002. I mean our only wins were against Winona and Mankato State.

No I’m saying we either stay at FCS and remain an elite team. It’s easier to remain elite at the FCS than the G5
Or
Move up to the G5 and have a top team 3- maybe 5 years out of every decade. Are those 5 years of ordinary going to affect us?
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
And I’m not trolling just trying to be realistic, who knew we would be able to build the championship dynasty to where we are now. I don’t think it’s realistic that we will run the table at the G5 every year and then become a P5 team. Anything can happen but will it? Boise State didn’t even get a P5 invite after that last shuffle so our chances are even more slim in the future.

No, they're going to make the top years even more special. Why don't we just move down to D2? We could win every championship every year no problem. Then we could really call ourselves the best team in the country.
If you're being serious I'll ask: do you really believe that FCS is the right level for NDSU? Program success, fan support, media rights, facilities, athletic budget, enrollment, endowment, academic profile, etc. Do we fit in here?

No I don't think FCS is the right level but i don’t expect moving up to be an instant success like we were at FCS. I’m probably fine either way. We will be a good team in theG5 but expecting to be a P5 one day is crazy imho.
Montana, UNI, SDSU, etc all belong in the G5.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
I do believe we will be an instate success. Winning record and competing at the highest level. We’ll take some dings but god damn it, we’ll give some as well.

yes, we absolutely could and already do out recruit G5/P5 teams regularly if you did an ounce of research you would see that, and also doing it as a fucking FCS team, finish the IPF and add a B instead of the C it totally changes things. Multiple times kids with F"B"S offer's that committe3d to F"C"S NDSU said that NDSU'S facilities are better or equal to many.
Try again
