If the trend in attendance and engagement continues, I think it is a slow decline of the program. The PF does very little to reverse those trends.
After all the championships the FB program deserved it. Its what drives the engine. The IPF has been built. Thats whats important. All the rest is speculative noise.

Let’s put it this way: How successful do you think Matt L. would be in an attempt to raise $50mil plus for the MBB program?
Big donors’ schedules would suddenly get busy/filled if they knew he was calling on them for that purpose.
Maybe Sanford Bwigs would have time, as they are allegedly there to help the less fortunate and sick.

So they threw 26 million at the shack. What was the ROI from the basketball programs?
It makes perfect sense to keep backing the engine that drives the train.

Maybe you’re right. It might be a hard sell for donors.
The PF isn’t likely going to raise the ceiling of the Football program. It’s not going to do anything to improve the BB programs and the rest of Oly sports don’t drive the AD budget. Its return is marginal given that in FCS we would be at or near the top even without it. No more tickets will be sold due to the PF and the FCS competition isn’t eliciting the same passion from the fanbase which drives other sources of revenue. But I guess we’ll see.
You know what they say about doing the same thing and expecting different results. We’ve squeezed all of the blood out of the FCS turnip.
Re: A new and better FBS thread
I’d argue that coaching has been the biggest limiting factor for the BB programs. Seems like Jory is maybe got something going. Richman has no more upside than what we’ve seen. Continuing to invest in him doesn’t provide any real ROI either.
Investing more in the football train completely makes sense if the there was still upward trajectory and room to grow. I think that will be very difficult in FCS. What new revenue streams or fan growth is out there if we stay FCS?

An FBS move is coming. ML and the athletic department made an investment in MBB (the Shac) in hopes that it would move forward. Unfortunately, at least IMO, they made a mistake in thinking the current HC could lead that change. Gotta eat it for now.

If an FBS move comes in the next couple of years my criticism of the decision on the PF doesn’t exist because I believe they used it to leverage an invite. If it doesn’t come then criticism is warranted. I agree on the current HC. The most recent extension was lazy.

It is built and it is an impressive facility. The decline in attendance and engagement over the past 5-7 years is not speculative noise, it is real. Now it’s about finding ways to mitigate the revenue loss from that decline. If an FBS move is made, I think there are new revenue streams that become available. If we stay FCS, new football revenue streams remain very limited. In that instance almost all new revenue opportunities are on the BB side. You and CAS are correct that the key to those BB revenue sources is reliant on the programs on court success. It will never grow without that.

Careful, you are making sense.

The latter part of his post is solid. Don’t have a lot of issues with balance/former.
I’ll also posit this: Until and if the MBB program starts showing some real grit, toughness and determination, it will never get seriously strong monetary support. The program must start emulating the very people it seeks support from. It’s not there.
