The fbs season is over in November. There is much less importance on having an enclosed stadium when you just eliminated a whole month of home games in the month you absolutely can argue you want them inside.
If stadium size was a huge factor in not getting a fbs invite and ndsu had to build a larger stadium, enclosed increases the price exponentially. It isn't just a roof that increases the price but now you need an hvac system.
Tulane's Yulman field was built for 75m in 2014, seats 30k, and can be expanded in the future to 40k. Today's dollars would be much higher but still much more affordable than something enclosed and much cheaper to maintain.
If it is fbs or bust, then it also needs to be remembered there will not be December football.

I have pointed out in the past that the local FBS team here in Minneapolis, while not enjoying the same type of success that our favorite team does, plays all their home games in an open air stadium.
Not only that but just a few years back the local professional team used that very same open air stadium to play through December and even into the playoffs while they rebuilt their own stadium in place.
Minneapolis is slight warmer than Fargo on average but not by THAT much.

So UT and OU applied for an invite to the SEC yesterday. I thought you had to be invited? Can we apply to join a conference?

To think the SEC was gonna allow the potential for a Sun Belt team to make the playoffs is straight up absurd

"Absurd" isn’t the right word. "Naïve" perhaps, but there’s no denying what’s righteous here and what’s simply self-serving inbred greed by the SEC.
But yeah, if this goes the way you suggest then the right thing for the G5 to do is walk away. I guess we’ll see how it all shakes out.

yeah, I made a similar point on Izzo's twitter thread. This kind of statement is substantively different than anything I've ever heard from ML on the topic. I'm hoping something is in the works.

Have a hunch the conversations have already taken place at NCAA functions. Now opening up for bidders.
Possible ML was waiting until a P5 shakeup opened more options. If so, well played yankee.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Geography and eyeballs.
It always seems to come down to those two factors.
And neither works in favor of this region.
If the MWC went looking, I'd suspect they'd look into the State of Montana first.
Out east I'd say JMU and Delaware get the geography (and budgets) nod.
No matter reality, folks from the rest of the country will say, "You want to go to Fargo, Brookings, Grand Forks, Vermillion, in January?" and the conversation is done.

Why the hell would any of them bring up Grand Forks and Vermillion? Even Brookings is a stretch. I don't think NDSU is tied to any of those schools when it comes to a potential FBS move. That is the type of move where it's every man for himself, imo. SDSU would be the only program that being tied to COULD help but only if something like the MAC comes calling or the MWC gets decimated and dropped down a peg where they would look at grouping schools geographically.

Thanks for finally answering my question. Here’s another one
Why would NDSU moving up to FBS bother you so much? Why do you care?

I'm more interested in the dynamics of all the conference shuffling that is coming.

With direct flights, indoor football, and an airport .5 mile from campus. Fargo is way more attractive than GF, Vermtown, Brookings...and Laramie
The Montana schools would be a package deal, not saying they wouldn't get the call but I'm pretty sure their stance on FBS has been known as a No for a long time

Ok with open air, just figure if in the winter we can tailgate outside for 5 hours then watching football inside an open air stadium for 3 hours the shouldn’t be an issue IF they sell booze

Hard to tailgate in the winter when you don't play home games in the winter in the FBS.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
for the last time.
FBS never plays past Nov 28th. And Conference may put NDSU on the road that last week every year to avoid cold.
So Nov 21 is worst/last day we could play outside , we'd be just fine.
Also, the travel bullshit worry. NDSU to Youngstown, Missouri, Indiana is same as Laramie, Denver, . big deal

This never after thanksgiving thing is all a bunch of BS. Everyone level transitioning to a full on tournament with at least 3 rounds.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Big 12 now believes the American is attempting to take all eight remaining members. Earlier report said "3-5" Big 12 members were being solicited Bob Bowlsby told CBS Sports. Story up soon.
BIG 12/AAC merge with Boise/BYU added gives them 20
WOW

The NCAA isn’t a thing anymore. They spit the bit. The conferences are firmly in charge and the two biggest ones are the SEC and the BIG. Let’s just consolidate the P5 into 2 leagues and be done.

One would think
Guessing SEC expands with OU/UT regardless but that's where it stops. B12 then adds 2-4 in a "victory" lap?
SEC is the wily one here it seems

Why would they invite two schools when they already have 12 teams?

Plenty of dominoes left to fall, but my best guess is B12 robs AAC (why the hell not after this?), AAC robs MWC/CUSA, ... and everybody hates the SEC

Why shouldn’t ESPN get to pick and choose? They write the checks.

Because 12 isn’t 14. Then we would be able to listen to Grizz fans all year every year on how “this is the year”. And stupid shit about delicious gravy.

Many say its about geography and eyeballs. Geography is nearly not a thing anymore considering the SEC and B1G.
If I was a conference I would invite as many as I can, capture eyeballs, and create a monopoly on games available- assist in scheduling top to bottom. SEC has a stranglehold on the biggest games now. Battle is for 3rd tier games.
Think marketing vs. football/tradition. Really odd to me that mid conferences haven’t taken this approach. The debunked idea of grabbing the whole MVFC? Or top teams from MVFC and Big Sky? I think would be brilliant. Simply put them in a division within my conference. Yeah yeah current dollars shared- but future dollars saved before my top teams start getting plucked.
