Seeing him hand off a bunch to end the game won't do much for me.

as I wake up today I pondered my analysis I went to bed with
as runners/scramblers
1- Quincy
1A- Cole
2- Cam
passer:
1- Cole
2- Cam
3 - Quincy
when you do this math, Cole would be a better option:
All 3 Run about the same, so let's find the BEST passer that can also run, right?
Cole should start

Should knowledge of the playbook be used in your analysis?

The word “analysis” takes offense to this post.
If 30K-50K fans can see that QP is not the right QB for the job, I’ll go with what they see, and what I see. We have a ton of talent on O that is going underutilized. It’s just common sense.

Feel free to expand on where you have seen Cole Payton perform to any of those activities in a game situation to place him higher than either one of the other two QBs. There is virtually no chance of seeing him start any game this year or relieve one of those two unless QP and Miller are both hurt. Sure, he might see some garbage time somewhere in the fourth, but only to basically hand the ball off or possibly a short pass against the other teams backups. If QP does get pulled or benched, we are going to see Miller in there. Payton just might be the next superstar QB for us, just not this year.

This^^. You won’t get a substantive response tho. My position: Cole is gonna be solid, and don’t use his 4 games unless we have to. He will be serviceable this year if and when we need to use him. We have had situations in the past where we had to go deep into QB depth chart (Notorious), so let’s leave Cole alone for now.

If he truly was the best option though, I’d 100% play him now.
1.) there is a significant loss of talent after this year
2.) in today’s age (transfer rules), I think the chance of a redshirt plus 4 year starter stint will no longer happen for a “stud QB” (assuming he is good as a starter)
I think you play the best players you have now. I get that goes against the grain of what NDSU has done as a “development program”….but the game is changing.

I have to, reluctantly, agree with the “game is changing” comment, but that’s also a good reason to make a QB switch anytime anywhere then.
But, we have no metrics to judge whether Cole is the best QB right now. We do, however, have enough of those to know that Cam is the better choice, right now.

Re: 2021 Verbal: Cole Payton
Cam is technically a redshirt freshman this year correct so Cole sits until he is a senior??

In theory and reality, he doesn’t sit til SR if he is better, but in this day and age, and with this staff, he may. Hugs!
-
Re: 2021 Verbal: Cole Payton
Last spring with Cam I heard on Bison 1660 that we never start true freshman, but in reality with all of the practices we had in the fall it was almost like he was already a redshirt freshman last spring as he didn't start right away in the spring. So in essence he had a good chunk of the fall and basically like spring practices by the time he actually started. So I personally counted him as a redshirt freshman last year and this year is kind like a sophomore season.

Right we don’t have any metrics to show that . I think the best player plays mentally is the way to go.

Not really sure that is a joke. There is no doubt in my mind that you’d do whatever it took to form a relationship with Cole’s grandma.

Well, Zach's cousin brought me about 4 beers on Tuesday. He's a bartender here in Colorado, so I guess that's his job. So there. :frog:

Re: 2021 Verbal: Cole Payton
Yaaay Cole got garbage time against a garbage team.
Boooo kind of obvious why he is number 3,freshman game management causes us to have to burn a TO, not sure he can hit the short throws any better than QP. That Duck to Yohnke was U-G-L-Y. He under threw Mathis, how the hell do you under throw Mathis? Sure the TD run looks cute, but on replay the Tree OLB completely blew his assignment. His grandma even with her artificial hip could have waddled fast enough for that td.
Kids got work to do.. no sense in burning his redshirt unless QP is out for awhile should make the QB competition fun next August.
But he does have nice calves.

No doubt Cole will be great, but he is behind a really good starting QB, who keeps getting better every game.

Yeah, I am definitely getting comfortable with Cam. He's turned the corner in a remarkable way. He's strung several impressive games together.

Re: 2021 Verbal: Cole Payton
well next fall will be interesting let's just say that.
none of you guys were there early today and say the FLY patterns that they throw at the end?
Coles were Steve Young like...

Dont disagree, but it was the same when Wentz was young. The ball just exploded out of his hand. But an effective, improving, winning QB is not something to mess with. Cam gets better each game.

I like Cam feeling those big calves at his heels. Will keep him on his toes.
