Boise State is a perfect example of why we don't move up now. They don't even know where they will be after the shakeup. I have said this before, we put everything into a move now, where do you come up with what is needed to move again when the music stops? The only move that makes any sense right now is no move. If there is a shakeup, then a decision would be made with a much clearer picture. If a shakeup doesn't happen, then it will still be a much clearer picture because there will still be some shakeup.
Things that have to change no matter what:
1. Notre Dame and BYU have to find a conference. The other P5 conferences have too much involved and at stake to have a couple of independents screw up polls and playoffs. They are going to cry that they bought into this system, so college football will has to honor the God given right conference participation has bestowed on anyone in the P5 conferences.
2. The Big 12 has to figure out a way to add at least two more schools, split into two divisions, and add a championship game. Everyone else is doing it, so there will be pressure for them to follow suit. Either that or they won't be part of the playoff system which would actually make the math a lot easier if you leave the Big 12 out. Take the four conference champions who were decided by playing a round robin divisional schedule and a conference championship game to determine the four remaining schools.
Could happen:
1. The Big 12 dissolves and the P5 becomes 4 super conferences by picking and choosing what 64 programs to bring with. I don't know the critieria, but it would certainly leave out all the AAC schools and Boise State, for example, as well.
2. All the P5 conferences go to 16 teams and now it is up to 80 schools. This would be the most inclusive method. This would mean the addition of 14 schools not currently in the P5 conferences. You could almost make a case for the AAC, at this point.
3. Everything stay just like it is and nothing ever changes. This is the most unlikely scenario because there is too much out there that needs to change to give the illusion of equity in the system.
My point being, there has to be changes and there will be changes. The problem with these changes is they will definitely affect G5 schools. Even the most non-invasive approach, which is getting the Big 12 up to speed, will change the look of the G5 conferences. Someone will get moved up to make it happen. I think the Big 12 and Pac 12 eventually meet the 14 schools the other 3 conferences have. Boise State and BYU would fit in either conference. Where does Notre Dame fit? What other school gets moved up into the Big 12 now? If Texas and OU bolt for the SEC, then you have to think the goal is 16 teams each. Hawaii, Fresno, BYU, and Boise State in Pac 12. Notre Dame and someone like Temple in Big 10? SMU, Tulane, Memphis, and Cincinnati in Big 12? Then USF and UCF in ACC? Now there has to be a G5 shakeup.
No matter which way you look at it, with all the changes that could possibly happen, NDSU doesn't have a home in any of the scenarios until 25 other schools have a home in those scenarios. Even if absolutely nothing happens, nothing has to happen long enough for anyone to be comfortable enough to think there is some stability. Then, and only then is there a chance NDSU could find a suitable home. So FBS or bust is a silly concept right now. Stadium expansion discussion. Silly. MWC discussion. Silly. There may not even be a MWC next year. Even if NDSU were to get into the MWC now, who is to say they are part of any P5 discussion later. Then what happens? We are no further or closer to an answer where we are sitting now then if we were sitting in a conference who might be in purgatory for a couple of years. When the shakeups happen, then we can make a decision on which way to turn the sail towards for the best of the program. I do know this, we will be where we are supposed to be.

If Notre Dame joins a conference, it's the ACC. They will not join the B1G.

That wasn't even the point. First of all, Notre Dame will join a conference. What conference it is doesn't really matter. Just because they are currently in the ACC obviously doesn't mean much to them when it comes to football, so when push comes to shove and they are in a position where they are forced to join somebody, all bets are off. I do believe when it gets to that point, it becomes who is really going where. For all anyone know, they could end up in the SEC. In fact, a very good argument could be made that if the SEC were to make a push for Texas and OU, they might just go all out and go for Miami and FSU, as well. Then they need to start looking at ways to divide up into four divisions and Notre Dame with their built in rivalries with FSU and Miami could very well join them and the ACC falls apart.
The point I was making, which is pretty clear, isn't about who is going where, but rather there is going to be some moving going on sooner rather than later. The whole idea of the P5 conferences leveraging themselves into this position of power is to, well, have equal power among all of its member conferences. That isn't where they are right now. They have made the first move and it has worked. The next move is to get all five conferences on equal footing. To do that, there are a lot of parts that need to move around and not just in the Big 12. When it is all said and done, it probably won't look like it does right now. This is the moment where they are sitting back and reloading for the next round. A handful of TV contracts have to get blown up and reworked. A handful of schools have to figure out where they really want to be. In the end, the P5 or P4 or whatever the end game looks like will not have any weak conferences playing by a different set of rules until the end when there is as much money on the line.

That's exactly correct. Forget about his the conferences are constructed now. Things are likely to change radically. This could be even greater in the G5 conferences as they lose the top programs.

2013 numbers are closer to 113,600 and 39,300, so we are pretty much already there.
