That probably has more impact on the decision to move to FBS in general.
It's fact that UND struggled to compete for recruits because of the footprint of where they played their games. I expect them to have much more success now that they are in the Summit/MVFC. Whether you like it or not, NDSU's location is a factor that makes all of this more difficult than if they were in a different geography.

Is your point that we won’t be able to recruit because parents want their kids playing close by? Do you really think the parents are going to tell their kids to not go to NDSU because they’ll have to fly to a couple more games each year than they would’ve if they would’ve stayed FCS? Do you even think kids today care how their parents get to games? The vast majority of our kids are either from outside the area or are going to NDSU when we come knocking (especially if we are MW).
Even biting that it does matter, the MW is still split up into divisions. Wyoming is playing one game in California this fall. I suspect that’s pretty typical for folks in the mountain division. To say that Missouri state, Youngstown, indy state, so ill aren’t far away but Colorado, Wyoming or Idaho are is tough.
As far as UND, they couldn’t recruit because they were the fourth horse to the region’s watering hole. IMO their inability to recruit up til now is probably much more a lack of resources, bad leadership and lack of tradition/fan base than anything. If NDSU were in the mountain west we wouldn’t be losing recruits to SDSU/UNI on the basis of NDSU playing 1/3 of their games out west.

Its part of the recruiting pitch. Just like it is for BB. How much it comes in to play I dont know. But how many kids leave NDSU and the excuse is they want to be closer to home?

Sure, I can see the part of the recruiting pitch that’s fair. If I’m an FBS caliber kid and Bubba is in my living room telling me to spurn NDSU so I can play my road games in Brookings and Vermillion vs. Boise and Colorado Springs he’ll be outta the house before he can give me my offer.
I’m not sure how many kids we really lose to actually wanting to be closer to home. Seems like most of those kids end up playing D2 ball with limited success anyways. It’s not like we’re dropping kids to go home and play at Sam Houston where they end up being a roaring success.
On the flip side, I will say that I agree with this point for all non-football sports. Those seasons are a minimum of 16 conference games and those games don’t carry as much weight as football due to the number of games played.

If we are competing against UNI and UND for recruits after we join the MW we are in even more trouble than I described. We would them be competing even more against MAC schools in our current recruiting footprint. In the MW we would need to change our recruiting footprint to Denver, Seattle, SLC, etc. We could still do ok in Minneapolis because it's a trip for them to get anywhere in the MAC but Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois have much easier trips to road games. It does matter to many.
A very good friend has a son that transferred from a B1G school. NDSU and JMU were both very interested. He chose EKU because it was closer to home and easier for dad to see most of his games. His goal is NFL and he could get that exposure anywhere not that he gets to play the position he wants to play. This friend also consults many recruits (he was a D1 athlete and coaches many track stars who also play football and basketball). He knows what recruits value. NDSU is a great option for many but geography is a big hurdle.

I recall reading that some P5's were starting to focus more on winning over....MOM. Something about how dads (if they are even around) might have a preference but will let the kid make up his mind. Moms* apparently (perhaps only anecdotally) develop pretty strong opinions... Tend to focus more on the "fit" and if they trust the staff to take the reins on raising a young man.
* love them viral videos of moms getting pissed at their sons for choosing the wrong school on signing day.

Would be pretty embarrassing to show up to prom without a date.
Gotta get a date lined up first.

Maybe so!
But probably not.
Of the recent schools who have moved up, 100% have made their intentions public before securing an invite.
Are there examples of programs who did NOT do this, but had FBS programs begging them to join their conferences without making a statement about moving up? Thats an honest, question, are there examples of this? I could be wrong, but precisely zero programs come to mind in this scenario.
1. The FCS was the Best option for NDSU for a very long time.

AS stated many time before---Everyone in the football world knows who NDSU is. All the ADs talk and know that NDSU is waiting in the wings. Our location is a tuff sell. If we were on the east coast or in MAC country the deal would have been done along time ago.

Based on what exactly? What ACTUAL information do you have that informs you? And just you not hearing about it isn't evidence that it did not happen. Nobody would release really ANY information until things were way past the initial discussions.

Has the media done a foia request on this?
Guessing they want to be careful to anger their best story source, but have a feeling Larson and Bresciani will be out before the next media contract comes up.

Bullshit. Your friend who you always referred to as a chair had no intimate knowledge of what transpired in the Athletic Dept. That came from one who knows who said chair was. And knows you. So quit with the false narrative.

I’m sorry, but if the American is REALLY looking for FB-only, all logic would point to NDSU. The Fargo-MSP I94 corridor has way more viewing eyes than Idaho (5.6M in MN + 0.8M in ND vs. 1.8M in spudville) and the Bison have a much higher FB ceiling than Boise (and they play on a green field like normal people). NDSU’s research profile – on the verge of another major jump I’m told – also blows the smurf turfs away. There’s clearly a G5 vacuum in these parts and NDSU is the ONLY school around that could conceivably fill it. Win-win for everyone. Who gives a shit if the Bison are FCS. It has no bearing on the reality of the issues involved, just the frail egos of the MWC fan boys. Mountain West sucks, Craig Thompson is an idiot – straight to the American baby!!
Sounds like almost everyone’s on board at this point?

that "chair" was with Bresciani more than you. not ONE SINGLE SOLICITATION !! should be grounds for firing.

The recommendation from the CFP's working group will be a 12-team model, sources tell @TheAthletic
. Six highest-ranked conference champions + six at-large spots.

With the expansion news, there is no reason for NDSU to remain in the FCS. Time for our admin to put on a full court press for the FBS.

Amen.
#1 You win the Mountain West you have a good shot at the AUTO Q
#2 You should be able to snag a #10-12 spot if you don't get the Auto Q
that's 2-3 chances at a National Title for all the people that whine about the Bowl Games...
PLUS you have a shot at Bowl Games in better locations than Frisco and Brown Grass.

This expansion to a 12 team playoff would also be a huge deal in terms of how attractive NDSU would look to a G5 conference. All of a sudden the competitive pedigree of a program becomes a lot more important because it gives all the teams in that conference a better shot at getting that (at least) one CFP bid for the G5. NDSU football doesn't move the needle in terms of geography or market but it would certainly move the needle in terms of increasing the competitiveness of a G5 league.

I have to disagree with the bolded. It’s all about eyeballs and TVs, and the fact that there is no other G5 program around means more eyeballs for NDSU. It’s also incorrect to look at NDSU’s enrollment and endowment (although dang, that baby’s growing at quite a clip now, isn’t it?) as qualifiers. NDSU’s enrollment is a symptom of the design of the NDUS. One should look at the total enrollment of the NDUS, since NDSU would be representing ND at the FBS level, and I didn’t even bring up MN, which has quite a few more people and just one P5 FBS team. Like I said, eyeballs and TVs.

BULL. it was all "eyeball opportunity" aka Rutgers = NY Market
but in 2021 going forward, it's. "ACTUAL % of eyeballs" watching.
NDSU'S eyeballs % within thier DMA would be top 20.

I say BULL back to you, friend, because in no way does your comment contradict mine
You make NDSU look bad, Lakes. You should stop

Re: A new and better FBS thread
No, we should stay
We should stay with our peer teachers colleges
We should stay in our geographic footprint because going national is spooky
We should stay to be able to be competitive because we’ll never be able to compete for playoffs if we move up
We should stay because taking the initiative and making moves for what’s best for NDSU won’t look good in the media
All the same reasons we should’ve never moved up from D2
Wait

Honestly I never actually thought about that. (Maybe because I didn’t think they’d ever go to a 12 team playoff). Would be awesome to be the Mountain West’s enforcer

I think you're overselling NDSU's market. Maybe I'm wrong but I don't think a G5 NDSU is going to pull any more Minnesota fans from the Gophers or South Dakota fans from the Huskers than they already have as an FCS powerhouse.

It’s possible. I enjoy watching different G5 teams from all over the country every fall (Boise, Wyoming, Houston) so I’m probably unique. But I also think that many around here grossly undersell the value of the Bison as a regional G5 brand, just through the shear novelty of having such a brand in the region, if that makes sense. Think about it. What are the closest G5 brands? It’s a void, and I think filling that void will carry a surprising amount of weight in terms of casual viewing or “eyes” or whatever you want to call it.
I also think there are a large number of regional college football fans that don’t follow FCS and view it as D2, even though it isn’t. My wife’s uncle, for example, who coached the Zephyrs for a long time. He‘s well aware of the Bison (his son turned down an NDSU FB offer to run track at KSU) but he’ll never watch them unless they are on mainstream TV. So now, when the Badger game is over, or the gophs or whatever, well here’s another FBS team in your own backyard that you can follow and be a fan of. I think there is tremendous untapped power in that.
