12 team playoff with a couple G5 auto bids? HOLY SHIT LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
FBS commissioners are considering expanding the College Football Playoff from four schools to up to double-digit teams.

If expansion happens in the next two years it will have been the direct result of COVID.

The bigger issue with the 4 team playoff is the recruiting impact than the transfer issue. If it is 4 teams, the best kids will end up at:
Alabama
Ohio State
Clemson
UGA
Oklahoma
Notre Dame
LSU
These schools already have big recruiting advantages based on money, history, facilities, but when you add in that they are the only ones with a real shot at the playoff... they will murder everyone else in recruiting.
If you move it to even 6 or 8 teams, that should spread talent out a bit more.
As it stands now, a kid who might like to go to USC or Florida will take the offer from Alabama because he wants a shot at a natty. A kid who likes North Carolina ends up at Clemson. A kid who likes Michigan goes to Notre Dame.
If you expand it to 6 or 8 teams, some of these guys maybe put less emphasis on going to a playoff school because more teams have a decent shot at making it. This should hypothetically snowball. Now Alabama loses more kids to Auburn, or Florida State. Notre Dame loses more kids to Michigan and Michigan State.
It seemed like it used to be that major programs (even struggling ones) would do great in recruiting because every big program was a year or two away from realistically having a shot at a big bowl game.
Now... those schools aren't a year or two from the pinnacle. They are 4-5 years away because the power schools are so much better positioned now to recruit the best guys.
Even a 6 or 8 team playoff could have massive massive ramifications while still generally resulting in blue blood programs generally winning.
I've been pretty satisfied with the 4 team playoff, but it seems like there are pretty tangible results we've been able to observe that have had a very negative impact on FBS.

I’m just saying 1) programs need money. 2) networks and streaming services need live content. 3) JPMorgan has billions of Super League financing burning a hole in its pocket.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Who says there Will be G5 auto bids? The 2nd place team in the SEC is getting in before the G5 - maybe even the 3rd place.

Maybe so. I lean no there. They made 1 CFP and all of a sudden they’re a perennial CFP contender. That’s ridiculous to me.

$413 MILLION Raised for NDSU
Don't ANYONE tell me that NDSU can't raise $100 Million for a New 40,000 Seat Semi-Enclosed On Campus Stadium and keep ALL THE REVENUE.. to hell with the City of Fargo/Fargodome (they can make money off of the tailgating/pregame concerts inside like we do in Frisco)
$300+ Million
NDSU $100 Million
Sanford $50 Million
Gate City $50 Million
Scheels $50 Million
Butler or Titan or RDO some Ag $50 Million
$20 Million Stadium Naming rights . $10 Million Field Naming rights
Each Sponsor gets a Corner Concourse to Showcase their products at EVERY EVENT!
NDSU keeps ALL revenue for tickets, suites, events, advertising. this could be a windfall of revenue for NDSU!

Sounds like some wishful thinking on donations from companies. Why would a company pony up all that cash only to have someone else get naming rights?
TCF spent 35 million to get naming rights, but some companies are going to spend $50 million in Fargo for a Corner? Lol.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
yea 20 year $2.5 mil/year contract to showcase your company to every event there? (obviously they'd get tickets too, give them 500 each up in upper deck to give to employees, run promo's, etc. chump change.

I looked up what some other schools have gotten for actual naming rights instead of just a corner in a seldom used stadium.... it wasn't very encouraging lol.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
North Dakota now has the ability to unlock the $8.4 billion Legacy Fund to invest in projects that will grow and diversify the state’s economy, which is perennially reliant on agriculture and energy.
ahem. NDSU FOOTBALL STADIUM could use some of this money

ya. i'm sure matt's excuse will be "well we were busy with the baseball team in the ncaa's"
I'd like NDSU to get to MWC before pud NMSU https://www.abqjournal.com/236926/nm...embership.html
why doesn't NDSU use the local media to push this narrative like Las Cruces "NDSU would prefer MWC membership!"

Every conversation I've had with those in the athletic department has indicated they aren't really interested in anything that would send them west. If all your road games are in the opposite direction of your primary recruiting footprint, recruiting becomes much different. UND had a similar issue in the Big Sky. That's not to say they wouldn't do it, but there was definitely more interest in going the other direction.
The alumni association felt the same way. While there is a decent alumni base in Seattle, Denver, and Phoenix, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois is collectively a larger group.
I think NDSU could be successful with a move west into FBS but there are a lot of factors to consider beyond just being in an FBS conference.

That's all true but they need to do something...interest is falling quickly.

Agreed and that may force a move to the MWC if that is their only option. But I think they would much more prefer a conference that keeps them in the Midwest more often.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
#1 no one gives a shit what happened to und
#2 MAC is shit, CUSA isnt plausible & big 12 wont
Mountain West is for the Best , only 4-5 away games a year wont hurt anything

1. You should absolutely care what happened to UND and
2. there is no world where ndsu is only playing 4 road games in a season at FBS lol.

He’s talking about the conference games being out west. You can pick where your non-conference games are.
We haven’t played in Wisconsin probably since I’ve been alive. We have one game a year in Iowa, zero in Minnesota. Sure we play a lot of games in Illinois, but are we really recruiting many players from out-state Illinois?
For me the Midwest argument doesn’t mean much. I think we’re grasping at straws if that’s the case. It reminds me of the folks who said we belong in FCS/summit/valley with like minded schools. But other than the Dakota schools our conferences are all teachers colleges lol

You keep forgetting a very important fact. A conference has to want you to get an invite. Im sure the conferences have numerous reasons for not offering the invite.
Those reasons may not seem valid to those here. But they dont have to. They only need to make sense them.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
I would think most G5 conferences would love to have a program like NDSU. The only negative for them would be travel and that varies depending on how dispersed the conference already is. We aren't a peer institution for P5 schools so I don't see that likely ever.
Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, Nebraska kids will choose NDSU because their family can travel to games in the MVFC/Summit or MAC footprint. You can drive to many of places for a long weekend. If their games are in Wyoming, Colorado, California, Nevada their only travel option is flights. This could factor into the difficulty of success. UND felt this in the Big Sky.

I don’t think he or anyone else has forgotten that. All of these conversations have the context of either “if it was up to NDSU what should we do” or “if there’s an offer on the table should NDSU take it”. The casual fan may not understand that, but everyone here does.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
PL. yes we've been over that for 8 fucking years now.
it's an absolute FAILURE of Matt/Dean NOT pursuing at least for 8 years!!
plus, screw the Travel argument, NDSU flies to Youngstown Ohio/Springfield Missouri/Terra Haute Ind.
Flying to Colorado/Wyoming/Utah/Boise is what, 30 min/1 hour longer?? big deal.

I'm not talking about the teams flying. I'm talking about family members attending games. Many will want to travel often to see their kids play. They aren't going to fly out west every week. But they could drive to Carbondale or Cedar Falls or Macomb. The school impact would be more flights than bus trips but that would be an issue regardless of which FBS conference the Bison joined. That probably has more impact on the decision to move to FBS in general.
It's fact that UND struggled to compete for recruits because of the footprint of where they played their games. I expect them to have much more success now that they are in the Summit/MVFC. Whether you like it or not, NDSU's location is a factor that makes all of this more difficult than if they were in a different geography.
