And market is really not a problem either. You think Wyoming has a big TV market? Or App St. for that matter? App St. is a VERY specific school with a state that has 6 other FBS Schools. They are located in Boone NC...ever heard of it? Me either.
And the population of NC is about twice that of Minnesota. Who has ONE FBS program. Imagine if MN had 3 FBS programs...the market would be much less for all of them, due to being spread out. But it works in NC I guess.
I don't buy the geography or market excuses.
I'm not saying you are saying that either. It just brought it to my mind when you mentioned geography.
You must be new to this topic. Geography is the ONLY reason NDSU is still FCS. Geography doesn’t matter if we could find a football only FBS conference except none of the FBS conferences want a football only member. We are not going to
Move all sports to the CUSA or Sunbelt because those conferences don’t want the extra travel. We need regional partners to make the move with us.

The one that surprised me recently: STL to Louisville is the same as Fargo to Minot.

That's crazy talk.

As was noted here from the start, UND was massively out of footprint of the BSC. Everything, every sport, was a flight at least to Denver (NoColo). That adds up fast and it drove UND to look to the Summit/MVFC. You can survive long flights somewhat, if half or so of your conference is still bus trips for Olympic/minor sports.
Re: A new and better FBS thread
Craig Thompson stepping down as Mountain West commissioner. Probably not going to change much immediately on its own, but it's still not insignificant...

Even UND could go toe-to-toe with Nebraska for three quarters. Nobody will remember GSU in 5 weeks except Nebraska fans recalling the final nail in the coffin for their coach.

Probably true. W&M took down Charlotte. CUSA is basically a mid tier fcs conference.
At least GSU and the SBC teams don't lose their FCS games, and they beat some good P5s also.
NDSU could take down Nebraska along with a large portion of the MWC.
There's a few teams in the MWC and SBC that would be a real challenge though.

FBS break from NCAA appearing less likely now. The more things change the more they stay the same …
"The Transformation Committee has already handed down proposals related to transfer rules and how NCAA enforcement operates as part of phase one of its work. A set of those proposals were approved last month.
Phase two is in progress, with membership requirements for schools, student-athlete benefits, access to championship events and revenue distribution at the core of the discussions."

Yeah, a split is not happening without Sankey/SEC on board, and it sounds like he is opposed to that.
This looks like posturing so the B1G and SEC can get what they want from the NCAA.
Mostly, thats freedom to spend more so they can dominate more sports.
They want to lift some of the limits on scholarships and coaches for football and other sports also.
