No thanks. I'd rather go indy.

Re: NDSU American Athletic Conference?
Football only would be fine with me IF that was ever an option.

All of the hype and interest that Minnesota is getting this week could be ours, if we get it right. (Not too much purple)

I get anxious about where the “move up” money is gonna come from. I’m already pretty much at my max but would feel guilty not contributing more. I doubt I’m the only one.
And then you have the “move up” people who donate nothing... Jussayin’!!

It's happening. I heard it on Bisonville.

Money won’t fall out of the sky after we declare we are FBS?

FBS talk is like the Red River in Fargo... You try to keep it contained to its own area, but fairly regularly it gets out and makes a mess out of everything.

Weird name for a conference.

I think the part that is really upsetting to the PRO-FBS people is that there hasn't even been a study that actually would tell how much money would need to be raised to do this.
Take the AAC for example. It's a good football conference and would allow for a football only option. Many like to talk about how much money it would take.... but does anyone actually know?
How much money would come to NDSU via conference affiliation (bowl affiliation, tv contracts, etc)? How much money in non-conference games could NDSU make? How many more scholarships (and how much) are necessary? How much do we spend in football travel now vs. with the AAC.... These are all things that may or may not be barriers but no one know because the sanctioned study isn't done.
-
Re: NDSU American Athletic Conference?
AAC would be sweet- aint happening though unless there is some kind of massive shakeup.
As it stands now- there is no way the Athletic department is considering any kind of move up for Football unless there is either 1. a MASSIVE shakeup in conferences where we would have some regionally logical conference mates. 2. get some massive donor where going independent doesnt seem crazy, or 3. either scenario #1 encourages others to move up with us (SDSU, maybe UNI, yes maybe even UND etc), or a new FBS conference is created (still unlikely) that makes much greater sense geographically.
I think it would be awesome, and would like it to happen. But none of the above scenarios seem particularly logical, much less likely.

To answer a couple of your questions: 85 scholies compared to 63, all full. FBS doesn't allow partials as they do in FCS. Somehow a mid December bowl game doesn't excite me. Sorry. Also, in terms of plane travel and expenses, Larsen needs only to look north and get figures for what it costs to be in the Big Sty Conference from UN_.
-
Re: NDSU American Athletic Conference?
That would all be great info to have. Anyone who is better with the numbers than me have this ability to give a rough guesstimate?

I assume you would also have to up the scholarship count in some women's sports as well.

You don't need a study to figure these things out. Just compare NDSU's budget with those in the AAC then add even more for additional travel expenses because NDSU would be a huge outlier. The closest school is 800+ miles away! It's so ridiculous why even bring it up?

I have no idea if we are fully funded in terms of scholarships regarding women's sports; I assume we are (title IX and all that); what would concern me more is whether or not NDSU would have to add women sports. I am not well versed in NCAA regs.

Re: NDSU American Athletic Conference?
AAC is a step up from MAC and MTN West. Not even plausible. Theyd add a CUSA member first.

Re: NDSU American Athletic Conference?
Because it’s fun. Nothing more than to speculate. Not everything has to be so serious. What if’s and buts can be fun without having the hummer of Thor brought down on you for suggesting something fun.

Re: NDSU American Athletic Conference?
More money for:
1. 22 football scholarships
2. At least 22 more womens scholarships which means more sports which means more facilities, coaching salaries, travel expenses, etc.
3. Higher coaching salaries for the football program which would mean higher coaching salaries across the board unless you want a title IX lawsuit
4. Football facility upgrades more then likely including a new stadium
5. Home game payouts
6. Away game travel budgets
Just to name a few.

Re: NDSU American Athletic Conference?
Dont know what NDSU's athletic budget is, but Air Force's is a little north of $50M. Im not sure if there is relevance to that or not, but that seems to me like it would be a good measuring stick. Now, how much of that is internal vs external revenue is also a question mark...

5 away games per year. How is it significantly more expensive than flying to Youngstown, Macomb, Normal, Terre Haute, Cedar Falls, Springfield, or Carbondale? Plus being in that conference will garner a bigger payout when playing a p5.

Are we not talking Football only? All other sports would be the same plus whatever more needed to fund the title9 stuff.

We would also have to pay more for someone to come to play us. Probably wouldn’t have to pay what an FBS school pays us but we’d probably have to pay in the $400k range for an fcs school

Re: NDSU American Athletic Conference?
The lowest AAC budget is USF at about $50M. NDSU is around $28M so you'd need nearly double just to be a bottom feeder in the conference. Not to mention trying to get student fees increased to support this would be like trying to get a politician to tell the truth!

Every away game would be a flight. Sure the payouts would be bigger but so are the expenses and who are we going to get games with when we are having a hell of a time now? You think MN is gonna pay us a $1.5M to go kick their ass when they can get a easy win over Toledo instead?
-
Re: NDSU American Athletic Conference?
I'm not against going FBS but we do not need to jump into a conference that would is so widespread that it would kill us at being competitive. If we make a move we have to be smart about it or we could end up like the knuckleheads up north!
-
Re: NDSU American Athletic Conference?
Our minor sports are no where near the level of the AAC. Football only invite is a pipe dream.

The last dozen or so comments exactly proves my point. Everyone has a different take on what the costs would actually be. If we are talking football only (which makes sense to me) i'm not so sure that the travel costs would really be that much more. Extra scholarships, coaching salaries, etc. are definitely increases....but by how much versus the additional revenue opportunities? How much additional sponsorship money could NDSU make being FBS? How much money from TV deals or bowls?
NDSU would do well to do an official study if nothing more than to know and be prepared should the opportunity present itself.

I definitely agree on the money issue. It’s kinda like paying for grad school to get a job that won’t make you more money. Wooohoo!
Playing devil’s advocate here, could the same have been said in 2002-2003? There were certainly a lot of folks dissing the idea of moving to FCS, and some of that was likely due to $$$. Where did the money come from?

you're not wrong.

Re: NDSU American Athletic Conference?
From what little I looked the current AAC TV deal is roughly just under $7,000,000 per school.

I’m curious how that discussion went as well. Little before my time and I don’t recall everything that was involved. I do vaguely remember the Big Sky not wanting us.
