Yep. 12 team is dead for now. Probably until 2025 when the contract is renewed. The 8 team and 16 team proposals are also DOA.
The problem is that we're in the middle of a contract, so I believe all parties have to agree to any changes. I think that means at least there are at least 8 or 9 parties* with veto power. That makes it almost impossible to get a change pushed through. But the new contract that starts with the 2025-26 season won't need absolute unanimous agreement, so that's probably when any expansion will happen.
*In no particular order: Pac 12, Big XII, Big 10, SEC, ACC, G5, Notre Dame, ESPN, and probably one or two more I'm missing.
For those keeping score:
- The Rose Bowl won't agree to change their date and they also aren't willing to alter the contract they have with the Big 10 and Pac 12. That complicates any expansion of rounds.
- The Pac 12, Big 10 and ACC aren't happy with the power of ESPN and the SEC and are willing to veto anything that would increase that(like a proposal that makes it likely the SEC would get 3 teams in)
- The SEC doesn't want any proposal that means other conferences could get 2 while the SEC wouldn't be able to get 3(that's why they'll veto any 8 team expansions)
- The G5 want a guaranteed spot plus the possibility of a second
- Notre Dame wants at least 12 so they have a reasonable shot

Given move timelines (exit/enter conferences) ... all the present shuffle is clearly targeting what is coming in 2025.

Right, but the poster before was talking about the 12-team proposal that was announced this summer. That proposal was designed to be implemented prior to 2025 and went up in smoke after the SEC expansion. Any expansion starting in 2025-26 will be a different plan than the one from this summer. They may be similar, but it will be a new negotiation process.

For all the reasons you noted above, I didn't expect FBS playoff change until 2025, when the P5 (soon to be P4?) can flex even harder than today and accumulate even more money and power.

That'd be me. My point was that I think it will expand regardless, and if Notre Dame wants it then it will happen for sure ... There was a lot of backlash and anger against SEC/ESPN immediately, but nonetheless I hear very few people now who don't think it will go to 12 at some point. Thanks for the links

The motivation to get it done sooner came from the revenue hole and uncertainty created by the pandemic for various parties involved as well as the availability of cheap financing but the window appears to have closed.

Meh, on Notre Dame’s influence. Maybe if they had a TV partner that was more invested in college football but they don’t. Their best chance was probably now and look at the deal that was on the table for them (never better than the 5th seed). If they’ve got no veto over the next deal I think that only increases the chances they’re forced into a conference.

Who all is watching the prime time match up between Miami Ohio-Ohio tonight ? Man I can’t wait to get into the MAC or CUSA so we can play on Tuesdays, or Wednesdays, or Thursdays. Screw playing on weekends because we will always be the big prime time game every week……
