When we told him that he had a funny way of pronouncing hawks he got pissy and started to go on about how unfair it was that they had to change it and blah blah blah same old story. He didn't like it at all when we told him that if they weren't arrogant assholes about it for 40 years they probably could've kept the name.
He didn't think we had any idea what we were talking about until he figured out that everyone he was lecturing on it went to NDSU then all he could talk about was the how the Ducks are going to destroy us in a few years because he lives there now.

Hockey is so great and it brings in so much money...oh, we have to cut baseball and men's golf cuz we don't have the money.

Re: Get Hockey to NDSU thread
Mankato is applying to join the NCHC. We could probably get into the WCHA on the cheap and be competitive in that league immediately.

Cheap is a relative term.
I used to want hockey at NDSU. But now I'd rather see that money invested into what is already here. FCOA has cemented my opinion there.

There's nothing cheap about hockey. It's a money pit.

I admit...part of it is pride. I don't like UND having something we don't. But I don't think it's a money pit if we're playing in the WCHA. Half the teams are a bus-ride away. I think men's hockey would sell out Scheels every weekend. That would pay for the women's team, which unfortunately would be a drain. But it would be covered.
In the meantime, I'll keep cheering for one of my alma maters...the U of M. Or for one of my former employers...MSU Mankato. But I'd much rather cheer for a home team. And I'll never cheer for UND.

I like hockey. I grew up in a hockey town. What I don't want is what un_ has when it comes to that. The overhead on fielding two hockey teams where you are guaranteed one will always be seriously in the red is phenomenal. un_ has one of the best revenue producing men's hockey programs in the nation and they are cutting sports. Most schools lose money because of hockey. I get that Fargo/Moorhead has the infrastructure to support college hockey, but let it be MSUM. The USHL is a nice level without all the headaches of a college putting a team out there, the scholarship commitment, and a whole different level of eligibility concerns to be competitive.
Football and Men's BB collectively can be much larger revenue producers. Women's BB can minimize the financial drain by moving in the right direction. Wrestling ebbs and flows financially, but has a lot of booster support. The other sports are what they are and will be with or without hockey. Hockey just adds economic pressure to an athletic department it doesn't need for the sake another school has it. The more I think about it the more I am convinced it creates another anchor somewhere in the athletic department rather than another financial engine.
Lastly, I don't think hockey brings any more real support from the community than continuing to build the current programs. I would rather see NDSU position itself to be in the second tier of football and build basketball as a legitimate mid-major competitive program every year than add another sport. Those things add to the core foundation NDSU is building as a national brand way better than a hockey program would.
These are just my opinions. A couple of years ago I was in favor of a hockey program but like I said, the more I think about it, the less sense it makes. We just need to keep trying to do the things we do better, not start doing more things.

Why not lacrosse ? We got a really good club team, infractacture already in place and more and more schools are adding west of Mississippi with Utah adding this week. Fastest growing sport in US and and sport UND doesn't have..

I feel like lacrosse is the new soccer. I always hear how it is growing and yada yada but I've been hearing that for 10 years and I just haven't seen it. I don't seeing it happen without a prominent major league. Hell, MLS is 10x bigger than major league lacrosse and it is still hardly a blip on the radar.

Lacrosse is growing at my school...and it seems to be chipping away at the numbers of kids in other sports.

Professional lacrosse is growing slowly but that is by plan.(Are not following other sports leagues like soccer in 70's who grew to fast) and You would probably see over 100 DI schools on men's side but not for Title IX. In spring college lacrosse is on ESPN family of networks and CBS sports network and they carry every playoff game. Championship weekend is usually in Philly or Baltimore at NFL Stadium and usually draw 35k to 40k for both semi and final.. You can really see growth in college game as a lot of mid major schools are now competing and beating the big schools like Duke, Virginia, John Hopkins etc as they can get players in the public schools where most States are sanctioning it as Varsity sport. North Dakota,South Dakota, Wyoming and Alaska are only states without sanctioned lacrosse.

Lacrosse?
What's next?
Adding a Polo team to our equestrian adventures?
It's enough to make you believe some snob from Stony Brook was in charge.

Well....
Polo would make more use out the NDSU Equestrian Center.

Re: Get Hockey to NDSU thread
The Bison will be the first team to play the University of Jamestown at the Wilson Arena here in Jtown. Being a complete hockey nut I am really looking forward to this inaugural season and beyond. Before that happens the Jimmies head up to Winnipeg to play the University of Manitoba, the same team UN_ plays to open their season.

Re: Get Hockey to NDSU thread
Some of you guys are looking at this wrong. I swear the anti-hockey sentiment for some of you is there just because that school up north has it. Fielding a successful hockey program and being great in football and basketball are not mutually exclusive. I also believe that men's hockey would be competitively and financially successful at NDSU. But I also believe it would be successful at those same levels at either USD or SDSU, whichever one goes first, if they played their home games in Sioux Falls. The downfall to adding ANY men's program is Title 9. In order to start up a program like men's hockey it would need to be offset by adding a women's sport. The sport cited most often is women's hockey, but why? Why not field a women's lacrosse program instead. It would be much cheaper than women's hockey and is growing at a much faster rate than a sport like women's field hockey.
The opportunities are there for the expansion of college hockey. The big hurdle of having a conference to play in is not there as the WCHA is available and is in the region.

Re: Get Hockey to NDSU thread
Couldn't NDSU do hockey and women's equestrian or tennis or some other odd sport to balance schollies?

If you are a top 20 athletic department in the country and have money/donors willing to throw money at a sport, sure. The Dakota schools don't have that kind of cash sitting around.

Re: Get Hockey to NDSU thread
Hockey and Basketball are great winter sports. And of course one FB game in Jan. is great, you all know that. Come to UND and watch a hockey game, you may be a little surprised? We're hoping we get to come to Fargo again like we did two years ago in the regional.

I've been to few UND hockey games. (youth hockey event) Can't argue it's pretty electric.

So.....with the recent announcement that the NAIA will be sponsoring hockey again, does it change the face of ACHA club hockey? 8-9 schools that are currently NAIA are taking their club teams and moving them to NAIA. More are slated to do so next year. This whole movement might give schools like Minot State, Iowa State, and NDSU a reason to dip their toe into cost containment hockey. I am not sure of the legality of NCAA schools putting one sport in NAIA but there is definetly plenty of precedent for it. As long as they were committed to non scholarship/sorta kind club Hockey it could be a blast. Outside of coaching cost, most of the program's money is self funded through student fees correct? I am sure a Hockey booster club could be put together to help raise extra funds to compete in the NAIA.
Positives.....
A) Don't need scholarships
B) Don't need FCOA
C) Don't need new facilities
Negatives....

Schools like NDSU would not play in an NAIA hockey division. The new NAIA league will be a new division formed within the ACHA. They basically hope that more NAIA schools add club hockey so that they can eventually bring it into the NAIA governing body. I somewhat doubt that the level of competition in this league will be any better than ACHA D1.
https://www.aqsaints.com/article/2360.php
The ACHA has announced that a division for its NAIA member institutions has been created and will begin competition next season. Six member institutions of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) will form an NAIA division within the America Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA), beginning the 2017-18 season.
The charter members of the ACHA's NAIA Division are Aquinas College, Indiana Institute of Technology, Lawrence Technological University, Life University, Lindenwood University-Belleville and Waldorf University.
ACHA Executive Director Mike Walley led the effort to create a new division for the growing number of varsity programs at NAIA institutions, with the NAIA Hockey Coaches Association working closely with ACHA leadership to create the new division that will host the NAIA varsity programs. The ACHA will continue to serve as the governing body and support the programs as the sport continues to grow at the NAIA level.
Said Aquinas College athletic director Nick Davidson, "We appreciate the ACHA working with our conference and other NAIA schools to develop a NAIA Division. Our hope is that other NAIA schools will continue to add hockey and move in the direction of creating hockey as a Championship Sport in the NAIA. This is a start of a movement in that direction."
Aquinas College's men's hockey team currently competes in the ACHA as part of the Michigan Collegiate Hockey Conference (MCHC). Competition in the new division will begin October 2017.

And Canisius plays in the MAAC. With Iona where your buddy Rick Pitino went instead of coming to Fargo.

Weird that there were 4 whole rows of good seats empty while the less good seats appear pretty full.
