Re: Verbal Commitments
JBB,
This is where we'll agree to disagree. Tony and I have hashed this out a couple of time about the recruiting of local talent.
Conclusion. There won't be as many local kids playing for NDSU, unless they are true Division I material. There are too many kids from Chicago, Milwaukee, the Twin Cities that are Division I material and are ready to sign for the scholarship. This will really be evident this recruiting year as the amount of blue chippers in ND is very limited. Dykema of Strasburg being one of them (UND?). Now I can't speak for the Minnesota side of the Red River, so I'll shut up and go back to my hole.... JD
Sidenote: I did not hear a thing about Frick committing. I have not seen anything in the SF Argus Leader about it... They did a good job keeping it quiet. He's a hell of player. I watched the Watertown - Yankton game this year and he definitely stood out. Great pick up...

Re: Verbal Commitments
Hey Bucky,
Why didn't Frick get more attention from the South Dakota Schools? Hey man, give me an email. Let me knows what's going on with your bad self. You can get my email on the Insider site. Colin

Re: Verbal Commitments
Bison may have found their answer at the other cornerback opposite of Gorman. They got a commitment from Walt Gilbert (6'0, 175) out of Milwaukee Vincent. StudentSports.com ranks him as the 51st best corner in the nation. He had an offer from Iowa and interest from Northwestern and Notre Dame. Apparently though...he didn't have the grades and would have had to sit out a year. So he's coming to Fargo instead. Nice!

Re: Verbal Commitments
Yeah, I'd agree with JD that there won't be as many ND kids playing for NDSU unless the talent level in the state rises. However, I'm not going to worry about it too much because it's pointless for now.
And btw, I said it over on Bison Insider but if NDSU lands Justin Frick that will be fantastic. I wonder if he would wrestle too - I read that he had a six-second pin this year. Walt Gilbert could be something special too - he is a jumper with speed (hurdler, sprinter, and has gone over 45 feet in the triple jump).

Re: Verbal Commitments
Im sorry fellows but we are disagreeing to agree. *We will get our share is what I meant, our share of the DI players. *As this thing plays out not many true DI regional talents are going to want to spend their playing years at DII unless of course they feel the University they pick is going to give them more of what they need for their future. *In fact, we wont be competing any longer with UND or the other DII schools around here for too many players. We may offer partials or encourage local players that are marginal DI to walk on, but the full rides are going to be reserved for the right people.

Re: Verbal Commitments
Just a note: If you hear or read of commitments to the Bison, please tell us your source of information so Tony and I can make a confirmation. I don't want to speak for Tony, but I will not post a commitment on the Insider site without confirmation. Thanks, JD

Re: Verbal Commitments
Just got confirmation from KDLT sports in Sioux Falls, SD.... NDSU has received a verbal commitment from OL/DL Justin Frick (6'4 - 260#) from Yankton, South Dakota. Frick was 1st Team 11AA SD Sports Writers selection on defense for the Class 11AA champion Yankton Bucks. He was recruited by several D-I schools including Colorado, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Stanford, Wyoming, and Notre Dame.

Re: Verbal Commitments
I have close friends in Yankton who are on the inside with Justin Frick and his family. The word is that he chose NDSU over Augustana. This fact has to hurt SDSU even more.

Re: Verbal Commitments
In response to earlier posts: no, I wouldn't put a blurb on the site about a verbal commitment unless there was a source to go along with it. If it's rumored on a message board, that's just not enough - you never know who's posting what.
-----------
But here's some more verbals from Wisconsin:
Milwaukee Journal Sentinal Article
Three new verbals for NDSU:
Eric Miller, RB, Greenfield: honorable mention all-state. First team all-region. 246 carries for 1605 yards and 16 TDs.
Symeon Cabell, S-RB, Cudahy. From Lamar Gordon's school.
Casey Radtke, TE, Oshkosh North. Throws shot and discus in track - pretty good in both. Also plays basketball.
------------------
Other NCC/NSIC Schools
UND:
Andy White, OLB-DE, Arrowhead
Duane Wenzel, S, Janesville Parker
Andy Soll, G, Fond du Lac
Duluth:
Jon Rufledt, ILB, Bloomer
Dan Hall, S, Valders
Augustana:
Jayson Winterfeldt, G-C
Mankato:
Dan Harke, ILB, Stevens Point
Brandon Stroik, S, Marshfield
Dan Smedberg, SS-OLB, Fond du Lac
---------------------
Here are the NCC/NSIC offers still outstanding:
-Mike Maloch 6'2 260 DT (Minn-Duluth and St. Cloud)
-Jonte Flowers 6'4 170 WR (UND and Winona)
-Kyle Opahle 6'2 190 QB (NDSU)
----------------------
Other points of interest:
-Luke Swan, WR, Fennimore plans to walk on at Wisconsin
-Walt Gilbert is still not listed as having committed anywhere
As you can see, there were a lot of NCC teams out hitting WI this year, so NDSU hitting Chicago was a good strategic move.

Re: Verbal Commitments
I've got a very good friend down in Yankton and he was pretty surprised when he heard that Frick was coming to SU. He had heard Iowa St. was after him pretty hard. He went on to say that Frick totally dominated the kid from Sioux Falls that had made a verbal to Oklahoma. ;D
