Hard to quantify for some programs. App State and Georgia Southern will never win another national title, which they did regularly in FCS. If you equate a bowl appearance every year or so with success, then they can definitely achieve success. Some of these programs either didn't play in the FCS very long or sucked, so just existing in FBS is probably enough for them to call it a 'success'.

Some of these schools were new start-ups and only played in FCS for two years before jumping so it's hard to compare FCS to FBS success.
Even though they moved up about 20 years ago, it’s the only school I consider to be really successful in the vein that would be NDSU’s expectation.
Now, they’re like the other schools on your list - just spinning their wheels in a pool of mediocrity.

STOP WITH THE NATL TITLE LINE!!!!! you think fans of UCLA & ARIZONA & ILLINOIS say "well we will never win a national title, we should move down to fcs" cram it up your piehole with that

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Another example for FBS:
2300 fans at a HS field at Indiana St with 2 FORD F 150s at 50 yard line horrible environment . I can't even imagine

Gonzaga looking into joining Mountain West Conference.
Quote:
Gonzaga, which advanced to the national championship game a year ago and is a No. 4 seed in this year’s NCAA tournament, is in negotiations about joining the conference, possibly in time for the 2018-19 basketball season......
......There’s been a lot of speculation that other schools would join the MW with Gonzaga, as sort of a package deal. But multiple sources have said that’s not the case. If the presidents of the MW’s 11 full members vote to extend an invitation to Gonzaga, it will be a stand-alone offer.
If BYU, New Mexico State, Rice, UTEP, St. Mary’s, Grand Canyon or any other school want to join the MW, they will have to pursue those opportunities on their own rather than on the Zags’ coattails......
......Gonzaga doesn’t have a football team, so its addition wouldn’t affect the MW’s current setup in football of two six-team divisions, with the winners of each meeting in a championship game. It would simply give the conference the same number of schools in basketball that it currently has in football, balancing out the football-only membership of Hawaii, which is in the Big West Conference in other sports.

JMU decided to NOT to go FBS in 2014 even though they were offered a spot in the Sun Belt.
One must also remember that when moving up there are probationary periods where your teams wont be eligible for bowl games--think Georgia Southern and you wont be eligible for conference bowl money splits or March madness money. So you have to have alot of money in reserve to make through those periods of non-revenue.

It's pretty cool that Denver ended up in the Summit League. They wanted into the MW - at least we were a second choice.

And would bolt in 5 seconds for the MWC, or Gonzagas spot in the WCC

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Adding Gonzaga is a smart move by Thompson. Had been rooting for Nevada as a tourney underdog because I really like EM as a coach (stupid Ramblers … sorry, not getting on the bandwagon. Not saying they aren’t good, but …).
The Zags boost MWC hoops and do much more for the MW than adding a football school. Makes me think Thompson might be smarter than I thought, which makes me even more certain there is no way in h*ll they add an FCS school anytime soon.

Correct, but all the positive goes to the MWC, Gonzaga doesnt need to increase their profile and frankly the MWC isn't helping them at all, they don't need to move. Travel doesn't change, in fact it moves them from California to Wyoming, Nevada, New Mexico, they currently play in Large California Metros, seems like a lateral move for them, not missing the fact that the WCC is all Religious Privates, seems odd they would join State schools
That's just me though but whatever

Agreed. I thought it seemed odd from GUs perspective too. Maybe since the MWC is higher profile (thanks to FB) than WCC?? Not really sure what they gain.

MWC is a multiple bid league. The WCC is surprisingly a one bid league, unless Gonzaga doesn't win the championship game. Maybe they just want to ensure their tournament entry.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
I heard on some radio show that they were moving to help their seeding in the tournament. Supposedly their conference wins would count for more now because the wcc is so terrible they were getting no credit for dominating it.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
I think it's a smart move for GU. Let's be real, the MWC is more well known than the WCC. Improves every measurable from SOS to RPI to possibly quality wins. There's a TV deal in play that people know about. Along with GU, I've heard the MWC is looking to get BYU who is currently independent in football. Would be a great get for their conference. MWC would increase its visibility in basketball and football. If this all works out, those supporting a hopeful move for NDSU to MWC look really good right now. Although I highly doubt it would ever happen. Would be pretty sweet if it did though. The conference is really trying to get itself to stand out as much as possible in the two biggest sports.

But why do the zags need to do any of what you mentioned? They already garner high seeds without risking more competition weekly i just dont see a huge advantage for GU, but whatever

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Gonzaga is going to stay in the WCC, they worked the MWC to get some concessions from the WCC schools and more TV money.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
So zero movement in this offseason. Just gonna continue to trophy chase and beat up on small schools?
In 3-4 years of beating the FBS Drum. One fact remains.
Dean, gene, Matt. .....not 1 of them has been a Man And picked up the phone to call and setup a meeting with mountain west Mac or big 12. Let's try at least!! Worse they can say is No. Sales 101! Not even a feasibility study??
Stagnation is coming on, you see it in the lack of enthusiasm. NDSU needs to capitalize on our success.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Technically they did. I can't remember the details but one of the polls the NCAA recognizes to name FBS champs had them at #1. Good enough for me, it's certainly a lot more legit then the fake titles recently claimed by Alabama, Texas A&M, Oklahoma State etc.

After a little research yes, very technically you are right. The poll I think you might be referring to is the Colley Matrix. UFC finished with a score of 0.975472 and Alabama 0.969223. That's a difference of .006349. The fact that nobody seemed to know about the poll kind of underscores my point. :)

Interesting McFeely piece about the difficulty NDSU has in scheduling FBS opponents. Of course, the obvious solution to this problem is to go FBS ourselves. But of course, we already knew that.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
We'll just set another precedent and be the first FCS school to pay FBS opponents to come to our house.

There you go. There is always a solution to every problem.

Interesting, I didn't get that vibe at all , plus what isn't factual.
Also I invite anyone that doesn't think the Fargo media treats NDSU athletics the kids gloves to listen to the Twin Cities media with regards to the Gophers.
