I don't think so, but you could be right. He seems like he puts on being an overly serious guy in these press conferences. The badly suppressed smile seems way out of character for him, to me. And even more specifically on the question about this topic.
I don't personally know the guy, only what I've seen from his interviews and press conferences. I've only interacted with him once. Maybe someone who knows him personally can weigh in.

It is possible we are one of 2 or 3 candidates under discussion by MW. The recent quasi denial by Gloria was interesting. She essentially said the press/media reports were inaccurate.
Where did she say that? She said you can’t believe everything you read which is a great no answer answer that means exactly nothing.

A Bohl Press conference comes to mind… he was asked about how the defense is preparing for an upcoming FBS opponent, and his reply was something like, “Yeah we’ve got a pretty good idea of what they’re going to do…” and he had this knowing smirk on his face… kinda like, I know something you and they don’t know…
This one just seemed like he was amused by the situation, the irony of a reporter asking him something that he would hear from them… kinda like a “you tell me…”
But yeah. I hope you’re right and who knows…

This Gloria stuff is news to me…

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Gloria is probably McMurphy's source, he has had everything so far with MWC. That isn't just some kind of accident.

She just said "don't believe everything you read", to radio guy in Hawaii. He asked about NIU and Toledo seeming to back away.
I think the goal is to get 2 schools in the CST zone, most likely as football only.
There are a number of schools they are talking to. I think you certainly have as much of chance as anybody.

Agreed. This was designed to nudge things along.

You think Gloria stooped to the level of bluffing an FCS school instead of just delivering an ultimatum? Lol
Why bring up NDSU at all? Spreading rumors about an FCS school seems like kind of a weak move?

Maybe. We don't know if she mentioned NDSU, specifically or just said she was also looking at another school and McMurphy assumed it was NDSU. That is a logical assumption.

I'm just throwing shit against the wall here but maybe it was leaked to gauge the support for the MWC inviting NDSU??? Whether it was from the general public, from other stakeholders at certain schools whose leaders weren't fans of adding NDSU, from potential media partners, from college football power players (like the SEC and B1G commissioners that the MWC is apparently wary of pissing off), or from some other group altogether. Just a guess...

McMurphy isn't some pud reporter looking for clicks. He predicted Gonzaga going to the PAC12, 3 months before it happened. He was discredited by other media members... until Gonzaga actually went to the PAC12

I mean anything is possible these days, so maybe. But looking at the reporter and the level of detail, I highly doubt this is something he was fed from an outside source and ran with it as gospel. Mcmurphy didn’t get to be the pre-eminent realignment reporter by broadcasting loose rumors - I’m sure he gets those every day.
So to your other point, maybe it was an inside source trying to kill NDSU to the MW before it starts. That, though, is a dangerous game to play because you’re putting the idea in people’s heads’ yourself. In the short term you better hope there actually is backlash or your plan completely backfires, and in the long term you’re getting people warmed up to the idea of NDSU in the MW.
I know we’re all in Viking-fan trust issue mode when it comes to NDSU to FBS. But instead of some conspiracy, maybe it’s just a solid report from a solid reporter?

That’s not what he reported, though. He said the sources tell him the MW is turning attention towards NDSU. Not that he thinks it’s NDSU, not that it could be NDSU, etc. He’s a legit reporter, not some regional beat guy trying to make a name for himself by guessing at stories.
As far as your theory that this is all just a ploy by Gloria to spook up NIU’s decision. There’s a 0% chance in my mind that she just bluffed with a school she has no intention of adding and isn’t already talking to. That’s bad juju in any business and like I said if you were going to do that, why not make it good and say it’s a Texas school like everyone else? lol
If Gloria needs help moving negotiations along I can take a shot: “Hey NIU, you have our best and last offer. Things are moving pretty fast and we need to be prepared to move quickly if you say no, so you have until next Friday to verbally accept the offer or come up with your counteroffer. There are other schools out there with mutual interest in joining the MW, so if you make a decision please let us know, otherwise if we don’t hear by next Friday we’ll assume you’ve moved on and we’ll do the same.”
Clear, concise, and doesn’t require you to pick up the Batphone and spread rumors about your own conference…

Re: A new and better FBS thread
For what’s its worth in the two weeks before Mcmurphy’s report, I heard secondhand from two separate people that were told by different people in leadership positions in the university that the MW was still very much on the table and that there was tangible optimism/excitement in the conversation. Part of the reason why I’m a lot more confident something is happening. Lots of smoke from the right fires this past month.
The people that told me this are very reliable sources of information and have been 100% spot on with stuff before.

Well, I'd choose to spin it that it was leaked to solidify NDSU's candidacy as a MWC expansion target not to torpedo it.
Of course there's also the possibility that, as it moves closer to being a reality and more people find out about it, that it gets out organically to reporters with connections.

I’d say yes and yes, both are not only likely but would happen in the event an invite was coming.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
I'm hopeful. If NDSU goes FBS I will attend a few games a season.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
A lot of us were around for the Big Sky build up and subsequent letdown. I'm tempering my enthusiasm.
On the flip side, the Big Sky fiasco showed a clear difference between FCS and FBS: In the FBS, every conference wants to get better, but in the FCS, getting better is not a consideration.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
I think two things can be true at once. The MW wants 2 CST schools for football only. For awhile it looked like NIU and Toledo. It may still be. McMurphy reported that NIU interest was "waning." Not sure what that means other than 'make a better offer' If they don't come Toledo won't either.
The MW wants them to crap or get off the pot. I think NDSU has alway been under consideration but probably not the first, second or even third choice. It may come down to NIU and NDSU. It may come down to NDSU and Tareleton. It may come down to NDSU and somebody else. Maybe Western Kentucky. The leak was not a threat to NIU and Toledo as much as it was to get them to decide one way or the other. I do believe the MW will circle back to Texas State as they have always been their 1st choice. A lot depends on what the Pac will do.
I think the odds are in your favor but everything is ...Fluid..at the moment.

I find this a bit interesting...MWC explored adding both NIU/Toledo for football-only invites; however, when McMurphy was on Hot Mic with Izzo last week, his seemed adamant that the MWC now was only looking to add ONE football-only school, to get the conference up to nine football members, thus giving them an even eight game conference schedule each year.

I want MWC All Sports, but Ill take what we can get.

Take us both. Someone close by in the central time zone that isnt another Dakota School. Win win.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
The tv people requested 2 schools in a different time zone. They wanted extra inventory so they would have multiple time slots all day. With just one school added for football, there would not be a conference game played in the CST every other week. Two means at least one MW conference game in the CST every week. Sometimes two.
In the words of Mick Jagger: You can't always get what you want.
Will the MW go with one in the midwest or one in Texas, or one all sports school in Sacramento or Davis.?
But if you try sometimes, you just might find, you get what you need..

There are a couple of reasons Gloria said not to believe everything you read. It is possible that she is clapping back on the 1 football only school blurb from McMurphy.

Toledo is Eastern Time so if the MWC picked up Toledo, the conference would have all the time zones.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
McMurphy's interview on Hot Mic with Dom this morning:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRYM2UIX4_w
Nothing new broke here - a lot of it was repeated from his interview on Bison 1660 last week. He said the latest in terms of NDSU/MWC contact is "nothing new". He said the timeline he'd expect the MWC membership questions to be resolved will be "in the next few months" and referenced the end of the academic year in May to be the latest he'd expect it to happen.

That might make sense. Whatever it was seemed to be pushback on the McMurphy leak/report. Maybe they haven’t given up on NIU and want to add a couple yet.
I’m still in the camp of things look promising, and we are as close as we’ve ever been, but it’s not done.
And I agree that there could be impacts depending on what PAC decides to do. Do they find a way to get Memphis or settle for Texas St? If Texas St isn’t taken, do they reconsider MW? My bet is “no” for Texas St, but will have to wait and see. A package of Texas St and UTEP makes some sense.

They are, he could want to go FBS more than Lakes but unlike some random person on a message board he needs to deliver on it and looking desperate is probably not the best tactic on basically every front.

I think additional poaching from the MWC is off the table for the PAC. On top of them squeezing pretty much all the juice out of that orange (they clearly viewed Utah St as a Plan B/C option) the remaining MWC schools signed a grant-of-rights agreement that keeps them together through 2032 I believe.
