I've wondered if this isn't to put a squeeze on Haslam.

NDSU's AD has been taking a lot of heat for not publicly pursuing FBS status*, so this could be a trial balloon to gauge the breadth of NDSU's support too.
You would not believe that crap NDSU took for daring to go from D2 to DI - including from concerned UND folk like The_Sicatoka. Not to mention that if there's going to be pushback from the legislature, then it's better to know now.
All I know is that it's nice to have somethings to talk about during the bye week. I mean, between this and the Ivy League maybe joining the playoffs, it is nice to see something other than "FCS Team with a playoff win and who NDSU beat 45-7 in the second round is going FBS."
* It's like we expect him to livestream cold calls to FBS ADs and presidents.

Larsen already making it known nothing happening. Nothing in this story gives me confidence from Larsen or Cook. https://www.inforum.com/sports/bison...letic-director

I don’t know, this seems like a perfectly acceptable public quote: "NDSU aspires to compete for championships at the highest level possible. As changes happen throughout college athletics, we continue to monitor the landscape of Division I membership," NDSU athletic director Matt Larsen said in a statement to The Forum. "At this time, NDSU has not been invited to any other conferences, and we believe we are well-positioned for the future."

I agree. It's the first time I've read a quote from ML on FBS that I didn't get mad. I feel like this is exactly the kind of quote an AD would have if they were in the beginning stages of talking with a conference.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
It's exactly what Larsen has to say. My UND friend (I'm sorry I have a couple) gloatingly sent this to me to dash my hope, all it did was keep them where they are at, if not raise them a bit.

I was thinking the same thing. Sure, no conference invite has been received yet, but that doesn't mean that he isn't having conversations about that possibility. McMurphy is a pretty reputable source, so for him to publicly put something out there, makes me believe that there is a bit of truth to the rumor.

Do you remember the delay between the Gateway (now MVFC)( extending NDSU an invitation and NDSU accepting it on March 7th, 2007? I don't because the invitation and acceptance were announced at the same time.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
I think any negotiation with NDSU would have an added layer because the cost of moving up, the transition period, whether to opt into the settlement , revenue sharing etc...I believe the entrance fee GCU will pay is 3.5 million. That might be a guideline for you as a football only invite.
It could take awhile to get to the invitation point.

I looked up posts from March 6th through 7th on this board. There was no talk about an invitation from any conference until March 6th. On March 7th, NDSU and the Gateway announced the invitation and acceptance simultaneously.
I would hope that schools take their time. There are layers, right? I think that the ADs work out a deal, but nothing is official until the university presidents approve it. I doubt NDSU will squawk about the financial side of things - other than to want performance bonuses.
Here is a small sampling of the threads back from the March, 2007:

Re: A new and better FBS thread
What Larsen said is exactly what he has to say publicly right now. Notice his choice of words - "At this time, NDSU has not received an invite to any other conferences". The fact that someone like Brett McMurphy is reporting that sources (as in plural) said that the MWC is considering NDSU leads me to believe that there has been significant conversation about this between NDSU and MWC stakeholders. That doesn't mean an invite is imminent but I think it does mean that NDSU is pursuing that invite.
These days an invite needs to be accepted before it is offered - maybe I'm reading too much in between the lines but I think the interest is there from both sides and if it gets to the point an official (or unofficial) invite is made it's going to be broken by someone like Brett McMurphy and not by a statement from Matt Larsen.

Maybe true… maybe I need to alter my thinking on it…

Re: A new and better FBS thread
I've voiced my frustration with the athletic departments laid back comments on this topic in the past, but I don't have any issues with his latest statement in the context of the tweets/articles from yesterday.
I'd say I'm cautiously optimistic. This feels real to me, but time will tell.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
So funny reading Reddit comments about the McMurphy article. Apparently we don’t want to move up to FBS and are “perfectly content” at the FCS level.
Lmao. Most stuff you read online and especially Reddit is just worthless speculation from people that have not a single clue.

That and we need to bring every football program in the Dakotas and Montanas along with us if we do go. See it every single time we get mentioned.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
McMurphy on 1660 right now. Football only and it is just one more school to get to nine.
Also said that NDSU is the best football program they could add and that includes the FBS candidates. SEC and Big 10 can't stop it but they can just take their ball and do their own thing, which they likely do regardless.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
He also made a great point about the SEC and Big10 commissioners not wanting more FCS schools at the FBS level. Pointing out that it is the SEC and Big10 who started all this by poaching schools, and the trickle down has resulted in group of 5 schools to get teams; and there are not that many schools to choose from. So dont be mad at the Mt West for looking at an FCS school like NDSU.

No fucking shit. As if the B10 or SEC are in a position to be whining about anything. They started this mess. If they have a problem with FCS level teams at the FBS level just demote the whole CUSA. That’s your problem, not NDSU.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
Izzo stirring the pot on twitter talking about bowl tie-ins. Again, the point of moving up isn’t the bowl system. That’s gravy. The benefit is more money, better conference, better brand, better regular season schedule, better non-conference opponents (that currently refuse to play us…). And if you want to talk about post season, the MW championship game gets me more excited than the annual 2nd marker game in Frisco.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
No school in the SEC or Big10 will be hurting financially because another FCS school moves up. I get the argument about not wanting the FBS getting watered down, hell, its a major complaint for the FCS. But NDSU isn’t like the rest of those schools. When you are talking about the most successful program in FCS history, its a little different than a Missouri St moving up.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
The fat cats in the B1G and SEC are whining about an extra $300K that goes to conferences for each team that hits bowl eligibility (https://businessofcollegesports.com/...ayoff-payouts/). The two teams that play in the CFP championship get $16M each (over 50 times that) assuming they don't also play in the first round (then it would be $20M). That payout goes to the conference of the participating school not the participating schools themselves. Man, those guys are greedy fuckers!

If the MW stops at 9 football members they won't have a MW championship game.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
McMurphy said that there would need to be financial incentive to go beyond 9. I am guessing that means they would add a 9th school for football and see where that gets them with their media partners.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
The post I was referring too was about the championship game being as exciting as the second round of the FCS playoffs. No championship game reduces revenue, too.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Lets say the Big 10 and SEC do their own super league. Where do you want NDSU to be? In an established FBS league with New Mexico, Air Force, Wyoming, Nevada, UNLV, San Jose State, UTEP and Hawaii or in the MVFC where most of the schools value other sports more then football? UNI and YSU are absolute shells of their former selves, who knows how much longer Indiana State will even keep trying to play football. All of the Valley schools will twist themselves into pretzels to do whatever the private basketball schools want them to do and that will never be increasing their football expenditures. There is a reason why MSU got out and they left a great basketball conferences behind to do it. They wanted to elevate their school and that wasn't happening in the MVC/MVFC.
NDSU needs to do this, Cook and Larsen need to make it happen. There is no alternative if the MWC is truly giving us a seat at the table.

And if that happens whats to stop the MWC from taking MAC schools down the road and making a bigger, better cross country conference. We need to be in the MWC.

At this point, I think we need to be in pretty much any conference that will offer to us. I'm afraid doors will be more likely to close in the future than to open...

The last five words are the key.....that's going to happen anyway. NDSU football to MW!!!!

And in the future we could lobby for SDSU as well. Imagine a MWC that extends as far east as Chicago and includes the best Valley schools. Would be so good.
...Imagine an NDSU-SDSU rivalry at the FBS level, possibly for a CFP playoff birth.

This is the most encouraging quote I've seen in some time. Notice his use of "and" instead of "but": It communicates, "We're ready when you [MWC] are!"

As much as I want NDSU in FBS, I also do not want to lose access to the CFP. At that point the G6 just become another rendition of FCS.
So, if all the chatter about SEC/B1G is serious, get us in the door, then throw away the key. Adding the Montanas, SDSU, or anyone else is not worth losing CFP access.
