The MAC isn’t going to go for them taking their football team out of the conference but leaving the rest of the programs. They would have never agreed to that in a million years.
So then NIU would have to find another home for their non-football programs. Likely in a far lesser conference.

You can still schedule them in a non-conference game.

This is my guess as well. Taking their football team out of the MAC was most likely not well received by the conference.

And then have to pay them $250k to come to the Dome for the non-conference FBS/FCS match-up, as I certainly wouldn't think that we'd be going to Brookings for that one.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
If NDSU gets an invitation that won't be well received by the MVFC..Nobody likes to lose members. The current MW was not at all happy about being poached. I don't think that played any role in whether NIU and Toledo leaves or not. It has to make financial sense for the everybody to get somebody to move. NIU and Toledo want more money so they hard taking a stern stand in the negotiations. The MW is using the standard negotiation tactic of leaking out that there are other schools they can add if the can't make a deal.
The thing that helps the MW is they don't have to add anybody. They have 8 full members. They would like to get another football school to get an 8 game conference schedule so they will likely keep trying to do that. But they will not come off a very tough negotiating stance.
If they have indeed opened a possible window to FCS, there are lots of potential candidates.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
My gaaaawd, this would be fantastic. If it happens, get ready to open your wallets as we'll need to endow more scholarships so that TM's funds can be used for other things.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
I know the MW is losing some schools, but I'd be much more excited about a MW schedule than the Valley schedule.

Yes, that’s exactly how it works. And it likely would not be every year, maybe once every 2-4 years. Good chance it would rotate with other MFVC teams in the mix.
I’ve never seen a FBS team agree to a home and home with a FCS school. Most G5 out of conference schedule one FCS buy game, one P4 pay game if they can, and a home and away G5 game from another conference. A few of the MAC punching bag teams land multiple P4 away games, but typically get pummeled, which is what the P4 seek out.
I think the original plan was for the Montanas and Dakotas to move together to MW, but it sounds like the money needed to make that happen likely isn’t there , or at least MW wasn’t willing to share enough for schools like Montana to make the jump. Based on rumors posted by the snowbelt twitter account and AD interview.

Probably realizing that with the travel and having to put their sports in the Horizon wasn't all that appealing. Perhaps the next MWC media deal will have to have some midweek games, making it similar to the MAC.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
If its only football its much much much much (did i stress how much yet) better to be ndsu alone. If its all sports invite sdsu too, imo.

If this scenario plays out he’ll spend every waking hour yelling into the void about how he not only invented the Let’s Go Bison chant but got NDSU a football only invite to the MWC.
Oh, and shit all over every player and coach while claiming to be the only true Bison fan.

Complain that we should have joined CUSA so we would be in P2 with UMich and UMinn now

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Meanwhile over at SS.com they want the Summit to kick NDSU out of the conference if we leave. Do they think ORU, Denver, KC, Omaha and UST really care and would want to lose NDSU over something like this? A school that they have a history with and either worked to add said school to the conference or in the case of ORU and KC brought them back with open arms.

NDSU in the MWC for FB might actually help elevate the Summit. If SDSU goes too, even more so, but I’m not holding my breath on that one
Not at all surprised by this and you knew it was coming
I find it interesting that ESPN hasn’t picked this up yet. They were all over NIU/Toledo right away if I recall correctly …

Yes, if anything it would elevate the league. It would really only hurt UND and maybe SDSU, although we could be building a bridge for SDSU to go FBS eventually if they want that.
USD has no FBS ambitions so I am not sure why they would care.

This might be an exception... I mean, here are the records of MVFC schools against NDSU since 2011
South Dakota State 12-7 (four of NDSU wins were knocking SDSU out of the playoffs)
South Dakota 10-2
Indiana State 8-1
Murray State 2-0
Northern Iowa 13-1
North Dakota 4-1
Youngstown State 11-1
Illinois State 13-0
Southern Illinois 11-1
Missouri State 12-0
Western Illinois 9-0
The average margin of victory for NDSU is 3 TDs.
I'm sure that NDSU's administration hates that this got leaked. I really hope the MWC communicated directly with NDSU beforehand. And, yeah, you're right - there are lots of schools out west - personally, I'm surprised that conferences aren't going after UC Davis, for example.

None better than NDSU. In fact, with NDSU's winning tradition the Bison are already better than most G5 schools. Does the Mountain West want to continue a downward slide after losing some of their best football members, or do they want to build on improving the conference? Look how NDSU was the driver for the MVFC in the FCS to relatively became like the SEC of the FBS.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
This has gotta be the second best scenario for NDSU, after going MWC for all sports. Bison football would be so much more fun playing an MWC schedule and mostly FBS non-con games. Leaving the other dakota schools behind is the icing on the cake.

Silly message board fodder is silly. The MVFC would be just fine with 10 remaining members if NDSU left and no one in the Summit, including the schools whose football teams are in the MVFC, would want to be booting anyone given that stability is a constant concern for a conference at the Summit League's level and it's not like they have a line up of schools clamoring to get in.

Do they think Denver, Omaha and UST want Summit hockey? If football can have a power play....why not hockey? Nobody wants this precedent outside of a desperate UND.

You know what Fenton's previous job was right? You don't think the idea has been talked about?

I am fully aware and I am sure it has been talked about much like Summit football but not really going anywhere for similar reasons.

I don't think it would be very popular for UND to work to get NDSU kicked out of the Summit League. Nor do I think that any conference commissioner would risk dooming the whole conference just to satisfy UND's spite. I mean, a commissioner's two main goals are stabilizing and improving their conferences. Kicking out NDSU runs counter to both those objectives.
Am I missing something?

McMurphy is a well respected tier 1 source. It could just be that the talks haven't progressed enough yet, or whoever spilled the beans didn't have a connection to ESPN. If things heat up, we should see more reports and leaks over the next few days. Some tier 2 reporters will already start spinning new stories off of the McMurphy one.
Sometimes, ESPN "leaks" are intentional for various reasons, like to put pressure on one of the parties to close the deal, or to informally break the news. Those often tend to come from high level sources like ADs and Commissioners.
Not sure yet if this leak was intentional, or just something that slipped out. Both can happen.

I am pretty certain this leak came from the MW. Could be a negotiation ploy or their true intentions.
