I usually don't dip into this thread but...
I think the "FCS is watered down" argument is pretty terrible because there is no comparison to the D2 situation. It's not like UMary and Minot State are joining the FCS. Regionally, the FCS schools are NDSU's peers.
Besides, we want to go to a division that we can compete in - a better argument would be that the FBS is getting watered down to the point that NDSU can step in and compete if we find the right conference.
The pre-NDSU power teams (Montana, App State, Marshall, Youngstown, Georgia Southern):
Before NDSU joined:
App State's only FBS wins were against Wake Forest - fun fact: somehow Wake Forest is considered P5 - they haven't beaten a top 10 FBS school since 1946.
Georgia Southern didn't beat any FBS teams
Montana's only FBS wins came against Cal State Fullerton, Idaho, and Oregon State (1996 when Oregon State was terrible)
Youngstown State had a bunch of FBS wins - all against MAC teams until they stopped scheduling them.
Marshall had 2 FBS wins, both against MAC teams
If you ignore App State's wins against Wake Forest, that is ONE P5 win from the lot of of them in the 25 seasons before NDSU joined the FCS. Kind of seems like maybe the gap between the P5 and top teams in the FCS has been shrinking.
If you really think about it, it is a terrible idea to dump on the FCS while NDSU is still in it.
You are right getting a conference invite is more than how the countryside looks or how good your football team is …….. there are many factors to consider whether NDSU would be a good addition to the MWC. How does NDSU compare academically to the other MWC members? If we base everything on football for conference membership then it’s no brainer, but there is more to the MEC than football!
Unless I'm misreading something, I think you kind of made the argument (with your FCS vs. FBS tally) that NDSU doesn't belong in the FCS and should get out pronto. NDSU is FBS caliber and has been for some time. As far as dumping on the FCS while we are in it...truth is truth. Plus, this is the only way we can get the admin and some pro-FCS'ers to consider changing their thinking on the matter.
I think jump from FCS to G5 type teams is way less than DII had become to FCS or DI-AA it was at time. I still think a lot of FBS G5 teams are kidding themselves as to what they really are. I think NDSU has proven that. Montana, App State (at the time) and even SDSU to a point have shown they can "play with" the big P5 boys may not all cases win (except in NDSU's case).
It'll be interesting with this realignment with OU/Texas and the ACC and possibly MW what will become of it. Will P5 truly ever break off I think that idea has simmered a bit than it previously was thought. Going G5 conference though we'd as a fanbase have to relish the fact that we'd be playing in some fairly pointless bowls. That said though could be an interesting game or two every year. But I don't think I'd ever feel in a bowl game that I did with SHSU #1, ISU-r, JMU games, GSU semifinals. That's what makes it "fun" although at time I probably wouldn't have called it fun for me. If it was a big name school and was Boise State-OU type game then yeah probably. But I don't ever get "riled" up for a semi meaningless football game (regular season or a bowl game) like I did/do for the numerous playoff games and national championship games anymore. Call it meaningless game fatigue!
I'm not really sure where NDSU fits in any FBS conference picture to me it would make a lot of regular season games even less meaningful to me than the MVFC teams and OCC teams we've played. Might lend to some more interesting road trips but those probably aren't happening for me until year 2031 at this point in my kids lives. If it happens I absolutely feel we need a "partner" team that we have some history with, SDSU, UMt type.
I am not against it but everyone here is a pretty small percentage of the bison fans, and rabid ones at that too so we all want the higher competition, and Matt/Dean (or more accurately Dean's replacement now) will have to consider. I'm still waiting for a proposal that really make sense and hopefully that comes out here within the next year or two.
I was in Cincinnati for the Bengals game and decided to check out their top 10 NCAA team and came away with a few thoughts.
1. They aren't in the B12 for a couple years, but they are already actively promoting being B12 with no mention of the American. They had a video mid game about it and brought the entire board of reagents onto the field for recognition. They were flying flags in the middle of the field with the Cincinnati and B12 logos on it. They see this as a huuuge win and view the B12 as a P5 still...which is funny, because they still have a few "P6" signs around the stadium.
2. They wound up beating Murray State 42-7, but they were thoroughly underwhelming. There is no doubt in my mind NDSU and SDSU could compete with them and teams like them.
3. Desmond Ridder is billed as a heisman candidate and possible 1st round qb...and he was utterly ordinary all day. Missed plenty of throws, was very conservative all 1st half, and didn't display a great arm.
4. Outdoor college stadiums are so much better than indoor. The dome is definitely louder, but the atmosphere is so much better outdoors.
5. It still blows me away that NDSU doesn't sell beer. Cincinnati had twice the fans and no issues with it.
6. Student section was great. Crazy energetic, lots of "Defend the Nip" shirts, and great signs; with my favorite being "Big Fick energy"
7. Curious where the American turns to replenish their numbers. If they pull from the MAC, I would think NDSU and SDSU would hold some appeal to the MAC.
8. If you get a chance to go watch other college teams, you should. I've seen top 10 Cincy, top 5 TCU, and top 5 Baylor play at home and each was cool. Nebraska, MN, and Texas have all been cool in their own ways too
So is NDSU gonna do this FBS shit or not?!
