The Mountain West has held deep and serious discussions with FCS Tarleton State, sources tell @YahooSports
. MWC needs one more full member to qualify as a conference.
Negotiations between the Texas-based FCS school and the conference have progressed.

Total facepalm for the MWC.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
For the record I've always been against mwc. For the record. Texas is just as much in the mountain west as us.
Fuck.

The Pac-12 has also had preliminary discussions with Grand Canyon and Saint Mary's -- who played each other in the NCAA men's basketball tournament last year -- but now that Gonzaga is on board,
the focus will go back to football.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Some speculation floating that Texas St will be invited to PAC, and then Tarleton to MW.
I swear every conference wants to plant their flag in Texas, even if its on a 2 inch plot of manure. I get it in some ways, but the texas bidding war is insane at this point. Like the price of TP and masks during covid.

Our biggest strategic mistake has not been building up basketball more.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
If Tarleton is what the Mountain West is valuing, maybe we don't want NDSU to be a part of their rebuild. (BTW what is a Tarleton? Is that the city they play in? I've never heard of them before this past year and still don't know where they are located.)

It makes logical sense, so therefor it will never happen. The PAC12 will add UCONN as a football only member instead because they are known to be such a football powerhouse.

I hope we play Tarleton in the playoffs this year.

Seems likely, expecially with news of Gonzaga to PAC.
'zags + Hawaii as FB only would seem the PAC plan.

That would be the magic kiss goodbye. Remember SHSU and JMU?
But it will probably all be done by then, sigh.

Yeah, just to add them to the list of teams we've worked over only to watch them put us in their rear view mirror as they move up. I'd list the teams, but it's too depressing.

Honestly, I think UConn is the play there. They would take UConn all sports in a heartbeat. But UConn is only shopping for a football conference home.

The MWC just got into Texas, they are offering UTEP. Dellinger has been off every single time in the MWC/PAC moves, last week it was all about Sac State. There is no way in hell Tarleton State is a candidate for anything but the CUSA, replacing UTEP.
MWC commissioner and PAC commissioner are friends, former co-workers who seem to make the same type of moves. Texas State are messing around, I doubt the PAC are interested. It is more likely Texas State are seeing who will give a better offer, the AAC or the MWC. The AAC doesn't need them, and like the MWC they just promised more money to lock in their top teams for a while.
My bet is Texas State and UTEP will both be in the MWC as full members. Hawaii would like a PAC invite, but it isn't likely coming now that Gonzaga is on board and UCONN are rumored to want a football only PAC invite. Hawaii gets their full membership to the MWC they have wanted. That brings the MWC to 8 full members. The next move would be going after the WCC. Gonzaga leaving, GCU and St. Mary's could very well get MWC invites as Olympic members which opens the door to "FCS powers" as referenced by the Wyoming AD.
I imagine in that scenario, there are only two FCS powers which would be seen as an improvement for the MWC and their membership. That is NDSU and SDSU as football only members.

Friends would've merged the 2PAC and MWC and been done. This seems more bloodsport.

Hope for Tarleton to MWC. It might make CUSA do what it should've done before: Dak4 western pod.

I hope for NIU and Toledo over that.
A vacancy in MAC could get us a phone call. A vacancy in CUSA gets filled by their shortlist of EKU, UCA, ETSU, etc. Too many other options in their region already on speed dial. Hell, CUSA might call up the Campbell Camels the way this is going.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Would the MWC go after NMSU or is that too close to UTEP and UNM? If yes, more CUSA damage.

It's the same market. I doubt it.

I think the play is UTEP + Texas St, with Tarleton the backup if Texas St declines.
Still surprised MW is willing to dig that deep to be in Texas. Might be that they looked at SHSU and Tarleton, and saw that Tarleton has better facilities and support. SHSU is some high school level shit in terms of facilities and fanbase. Tarleton has more financial support as well. They get Texas A&M system oil money.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
Tarleton as leverage to force Texas St ... interesting notion.
Texas St wants PAC not MWC is my guess so that play by MWC makes sense. Take MWC offer or be left with nothing.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
In a world of fewer HS students and declining enrollments you need exposure where you can recruit students for the school. Advantage: Texas.

That’s very true. I have heard from many teenagers here in DFW that if Tarleton was in the MW, they’d be climbing over each other to enroll at UNLV.

Not what I heard. I heard everyone talking about enrolling into Wyoming. Stephenville of the North they say.

Wouldn't it be ironic if at the end of all of this shuffling the only spot available is CUSA?

At that point we are truly fucked. They will take St Thomas if forced to, after asking 120 other FCS schools.

At this point cusa would be as good as the mvfc, but in the fbs. As long as cusa is both sdsu and ndsu, then do it.

Extra Points’ Brown recently reported that Conference USA reached out to North Dakota State about potential membership, and the Bison immediately said no. Inforum’s McFeely says the report “piqued his interest” because he has asked Bison AD Larsen numerous times if NDSU has been contacted by FBS leagues, including C-USA, and each time Larsen has said no, including after Brown’s reporting. McFeely: “This is one of those odd situations in which I don't doubt either party. Matt Brown likely had one of his sources (somebody from C-USA, or a school in C-USA, or a third party that deals with C-USA like a search firm or another school) tell him NDSU was contacted. I have no reason to doubt Matt Larsen's veracity in telling me multiple times that C-USA has not contacted NDSU. He knows that if it happened, it's going to get out eventually in today's media world. (As an aside, semantics sometimes play a role in the reporting of these stories, just like they do with coaching searches).” Regardless, McFeely believes the point is moot because NDSU, he contends, “would rather play the long game and stay in the Missouri Valley Football Conference and Summit League and wait for a potential invitation to the Mountain West (which might never come) instead of accepting (or pursuing) an invite to CUSA or the MAC.”
Would be f'n funny for sure.

Hell, I'm not sure MW is "as good as" MVFC competitively when this is done.
Do we take a shitty CUSA offer if nothing else there? Sure. But the problem is that offer will never come. There are dozens of schools ahead of us on CUSA list.

Exactly what I was referring to. Thanks for the assistance in linking the previous report. This complete lack of understanding of how the pecking order of FBS/FCS works along with the continued complete disinterest in developing our basketball programs up to a true mid-major level are both maddening to me and are what shapes my opinion on ML as an AD.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
When the invite does come, I hope Logan Campbell gets the scoop and breaks the news just to piss off Larsen.
