I guess if nothing else, this would suggest ti some degree that ndsu's brand has penetrated into their markets at least more than the other schools.
Sure, but unfortunately the facebook crowd doesn't get a vote, or MWC wouldn't have just offered Texas St. The conferences do their analysis differently than the average fan. Maybe its foolish, but university presidents have their own goals and agenda. Much of it in the end is driven by the media company deals. With MW not sure what their media partners want now.

They got the money because they had offers from 2 other conferences..So did AFA. Had those two teams left the MW would cease to be. That simple. These are 1 time signing bonuses. After that they will split all distributions evenly.
The other schools got bonuses too. All the schools signed a GOR until 2032. That would indicate to me that the will be an extension of the tv deal which ends in 26.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
I do think there is a plan in place to spread out the conference into the Central Time zone. There are schools in that part of the country..Not many left out west..whether it will work or not, I have no idea.

Feels like the same situation developing with Texas St. Not sure what their price will be, or if anyone else will ante up. Either way, they are in good shape, and may just get some bonuses tossed their way to stay in SBC. Believe everyone started chasing after them, rather than the reverse.

Every major media outlet thinks it should be us including the New York Times, Barstool Sports, Washington Post, Yahoo Sports, etc

The modicum of hope I have left is this. Why the hell would you take NIU and Toledo and not have anyone else in the central time zone? NDSU, SDSU, Texas State, NIU and Toledo. Hell, grab Sammy at that point if you want Texas so bad. NIU and Toledo are still football only and don’t solve the MW’s problem. Wouldn’t make for a bad eastern wing. Gotta fill in the gap between with someone right?
That said, are we cheering for NIU and Toledo to accept?

Anyone with a brain thinks that. This whole “Texas” thing is just next flavor of “media market” idiocy. This is what happens when you hire Deloitte. They have to think “outside the box” to earn their 7 figure paycheck. If the consultant just told them to do the obvious right thing, there wouldn’t be a need to hire the consultant.

What reporters say is not always identical to what the media bosses drawing up contracts think. Reporters are more aligned with the general population, while media/marketing companies are often looking at charts and graphs of MSAs, population density and other statistics. Presidents and conference decision makers look at what the media folks say the school is worth, plus things like number of students, where does the school rank in academic circles, etc. Usually it comes down to money though, and whether they believe it will grow conference value.
I think we may likely get invited this round, but not ahead of a school like Texas St, which is what the facebook crowd was saying. Texas St is sitting on at least the MW offer now, but whether they take it is anyones guess. They could choose to stay in SBC, and I think they really want PAC.
I still believe we have a good chance this round to join either MW or MAC. I just don't think they will take us first over FBS options. We will be towards the top of the list for FCS options for those two conferences. Our fans understandably want to believe we are a better option than existing FBS schools, but the FBS conferences won't view it that way.

Really tough call.
The more FBS teams accept, the lower the pressure on MW to immediately add FCS teams. If the chatter from McFeely is right, there is also some countervailing pressure from SEC on MW to *not* add FCS teams.
Flip side of that coin is if they accept, it then bubbles down to MAC.
Rumors out there that if NIU and Toledo leave, others may leave MAC as well, and their options for FBS backfill is pretty limited.
If NIU and Toledo leave, maybe our focus should shift to getting a MAC invite.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
As of this morning it does not appear any offer to the MAC schools has occurred. Texas State, reportedly, has a verbal offer in hand..Or I guess in ear at this point.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
I do not anticipate any of these three schools joining the MW. No inside info on this one..Just a hunch.

Texas St seems more likely to go PAC, if they get that chance. After that it feels like a coin flip where they go.
The leak on NIU and Toledo was interesting. It never said there was an offer, only that MAC was informed by MW they were interested in them. Not clear why that notice was given, it feels political or legal in nature.

Texas State isn’t going to the mountain west. They would need so much money up front to forego any future AAC offer it’ll never happen.
Don’t even know if they’d go to the PAC honestly. For similar reasons the AAC schools said no.
These GoR’s or other financial/legal commitments that have become common may end up being FCS schools’ saving grace in the end. NDSU probably doesn’t care if MW wants us to sign on for 8 years. Many other schools that’s an absolute dealbreaker unless that’s the conference you want to be your long term home.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
Well i guess we know who wears the pants eh.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
I think the MWC is trying to offer these schools before the PAC does, trying to make life difficult for them.
A lot of these schools have AAC aspirations and/or are watching the ACC for that potential blow up.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
The scuttlebutt is the MAC schools contacted the MW first. Whether or not they can work out a deal or not is unknowable at this time. I am not convinced the Pac or AAC is pursuing them. I believe the Pac focus is squarely centered on Memphis and Tulane for all sports. They really don't need football only adds.

It certainly feels like thats the case after Memphis publicly said it wasn't a hard no, just a bad initial offer. Everything else has been quiet, so PAC likely hasn't moved on to their next option yet.
Also feels like PAC is stalling Texas St as a backup option, while Texas St was trying to force their hand by leaking the MW offer. Would have to think we get an answer on the outcome of Texas St this week. MW is unlikely to wait too long for an answer.
So far no known offer by AAC to Texas St either, but if Memphis/Tulane leave, that could change quickly.

I mean Memphis was probably never going to say no and never come back, there was enough of a lack of interest that they couldn’t come to an agreement on negotiations. Still don’t see them leaving and if they did, it would be because PAC had a media deal in hand that is 2-3+ times more than AAC. Just not going to happen.
Does seem like a lot of stuff happens over the weekends and then a bunch of bombshells drop early in the week. I’m sure this week will be interesting.

Memphis AD could have made a simpler statement like "we are happy in AAC for the time being" etc. He made a real point of saying that it was only a "no" for that specific offer, and that they expected a better deal. He basically said, offer us something better and we are a yes.
Its also basically understood that if Memphis moves, Tulane and USF would want to go with them. So Memphis has some leverage.

that Memphis AD has a bright future. I doubt he is still at Memphis in a few years. Some big time blue chip college will throw a ton of money his way. I was getting excited about Memphis sports watching his interview and I dont care about them.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
While not 100% confirmed, all indicators this morning are that Texas St will be accepting the MW offer.
Lots of buzz in the Texas St crowd that this is coming soon. Side note: I've visited a few Texas stadiums, and will say Texas St has a very nice one. SHSU is high school level garbage.

Frankly speaking I’ve been told by multiple sources I very much trust that on multiple occasions, an invite was essentially imminent only to evaporate at the last minute.
To BigLakes’s point, it’s been 6+ years of “trust us we’re working on it but we can’t talk about it”. Understandable but for the average fan who doesn’t have that access but still donates thousands and is getting overcharged on tickets, that is only going to work for so long. Those people are starting to leave in droves and it will significantly hurt our programs if it continues like it has.
In the past I and others would get rebuked pretty bad on here when we criticized the lack of communication coming from the athletic department on FBS. Those people could never understand that my point wasn’t about letting FBS conferences know about our intentions, it was about letting our fan base know what our vision is moving forward. It was trying to avoid this exact current situation where attendance and interest are plummeting because people have no idea the direction we are going or trying to go. It would’ve been very helpful now if they would’ve laid down some of that transparency in the past, and if we don’t get an invite during this round of shuffling, open communication is an absolute, absolute must. Otherwise we’ll see the bottom fall out on fan interest.
This is why I dropped my season tickets...

I kept my total but downgraded the seats paying less than half. Even winning another FCS championship, or 8, isn't going to change the trajectory of fan engagement and financials.

this is the real issue with being public, the fans don't know and continue to lose faith, because they are being kept in the dark.

I promptly told him no more money to NDSU until Larsen gets something done with going FBS. I dropped my Teammakers membership too. No use donating just to stay FCS. If the fanbase is only showing up because of FBS hopes, then thats the real problem to solve.
There is absolutely no guarantee we land a FBS invite now, or in 30 years. And by the time we get there, it could be completely different and feel more like FCS all over again anyhow.
Everyone wants to believe that if the admin just does everything right an FBS invite will happen. There's just so many other factors at play that are out of our control. The conferences are the ones making the decisions, and the media companies play a role also. If the MW media partners decide they really want us, we will get an invite.
Now is still the best opportunity we have had. If it doesn't happen this round, then we will probably be in FCS for the next 5-10 years.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Maybe the alumni, TM, Fans, local media, etc isn't being loud enough. Squeaky wheels get the grease. I think most people just want an explanation either way, for or against. It's damn frustrating.
