Yes.....of course that is the concern. And why Larson plays coy. And why they leak the media the real intentions off the record since that does not make headlines. You think every person hangs on every word of Kolpack, Izzo, and McFeely?

Illinois State
Albany
SFA
I don't believe all of these have made big public statements. There was some buzz around Tarleton, SFA, EKU because when CUSA talked to them last time, it leaked that the conference told them effectively they were on the short list/runner ups for next adds there.
UCD and Sac St I believe are engaged in a little gamemanship right now, because it is likely only one of those two get selected. UCD has some advantages in terms of size, prestige and student body. Sac St has been trying hard to make up for those perceived disadvantages by raising a lot of funds to build new infrastructure. They know they wouldn't even be in the discussion with current facilities.

If NDSU doesn’t get an invite this round, what’s the plan to renew fan engagement moving forward? What’s the plan to solidify the budget so that we can continue to build for the future? If I have to guess, I’m not putting money towards it. I think a lot of fans feel the same way.
One hundred percent.

I think that if UND or the state legislature was going to kill something, they wouldn’t need a public statement from NDSU to know something was in the works. They know NDSU is in the running and maybe even actively working on something now. Why wait?
I also think that if I’m the MW and NDSU tells me “I have to keep it a secret so my state legislature doesn’t shoot it down”, I’m not touching that baggage with a 10 foot pole.

Guarantee that for every leaked expansion candidate, there are 3 or 4 others never publicly mentioned. Much of the time, the names don't come out until the discussions are fairly far along. Conferences aren't eager to leak everything they are doing. There is a game of chess behind the scenes, and conference A has a plan for different scenarios based on what conferences B and C do. They don't like to tip their hand. Until recently, many people doubted PAC would even try to rebuild, and kept claiming it was impossible. Meanwhile PAC was laying groundwork to do exactly that.
People are making way too much out of ndsu not being in the headlines yet. A lot of activity always happens below the surface first. And we simply aren't at the stage of FCS additions yet.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
I think Big Horns is correct. There are candidates that are under the radar. When the MWC had the airport meeting they jettisoned every school in the Central time zone, TCU, SMU, Tulsa, Rice and Utep "MST". Until this week they haven't looked east at all for new members. While I had heard that NIU and Toledo had contacted them, I was surprised a bit. Logically, the MW has to look east now. Who knows where they are looking?
I do think they will add UC Davis if they can..If not, SAC State. I have no idea if the MAC schools will join. I do not know if you are under consideration or even interested but the MW has to add some schools from somewhere.
Texas State is in a great spot right now. They have 4 possible conference slots. The Belt, the AAC the MW and the Pac-State conference.
However, other than that it is a total grab bag.. The first year Gloria came on board she along with the executive board, mapped out a plan for every possible contingency. They even had a plan if the Pac 12 imploded. The have assessed and evaluated all along. They know who might be interested, they know who isn't interested.
They have some time to figure it out but it would help to get something going soon.

Big time college football Northern Illinois. They had 10800 for the opening game of the season against Western illinois. Sometimes I think many forget many of teams are not number 1 show in their towns whereas we are the show for most of the state.

Yeah and they can't even draw in a bus league

12 MAC titles, Toledo has 12 also.
Combined NIU and Toledo have 7 of past 10 MAC titles.
That plus TV markets is what FBS conferences care about. Mid week games in the MAC tends to erode attendance and the fanbase. The entire MAC suffers from this imo. They traded away Saturday games for TV money.
Yes, we know we would likely beat these teams, but they have a long FBS record that can be measured. Not saying they are better, just the perception of being proven is there. FCS titles largely get overlooked by FBS.
And yes, if they create an opening for us in MAC, we should still take it, even with midweek games.

Issue with the MAC is that they have even more options to add then any western league.

Sources: Texas State officials have received a verbal offer to join the Mountain West. A decision is expected in the upcoming days, as the talks continue. The Pac-12 has also expressed interest, but that has yet to yield an offer.

Sac State down 27-9 to NAU, will probably have 8 fans at their next home game...gotta get them into the FBS. MAAARRRKKKKETTSSS!!!!

Re: A new and better FBS thread
This is not a market size add..Their football is on the rise. The best feature is the international airport 30 miles away in Austin. Easy easy travel. 33 thousand students and a whole bunch of alumni. 28 thousand seat stadium, 10 thousand seat basketball arena. warm weather for baseball, softball etc..they would be in the AAC right now but UTSA is only 45 minutes away..
They are on a bit of island but that is the case with the Belt and the Pac State.
There are not a whole lot of schools to choose from relatively close to MW mountain schools. I hope the MW gets them..
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
Location location location. I am not sure the MW is looking to add any FCS but who knows..Davis is a legit maybe ..Sac State probably not.

They are the best option left on the table for FBS additions, I won't argue with that.

This was expected. Speculation floating this "leak" was intentional to put pressure on PAC and AAC. Thamel is well connected, and those leaks are rarely by accident.
SBC, PAC, AAC, MWC all want them. MAC is the only G5 that won’t be a player in that battle/bidding war. MWC or AAC might outbid the PAC there. I suspect PAC still trying to negotiate with Memphis/Tulane or others. Won’t be shocked if something with PAC and a top SBC team pops up out of the blue next.

So bad. These idiots philosophy is so dumb, might as well add UMKC because we all know they have hundreds of fans in Kansas City. They could also add Chicago State because hey, despite being the worst program ever, they are in Chicago. And Chicago is bigger than North Dakota State so it's a no brainer!!

That should be an easy decision for them but I would kind of chuckle if the Sun Belt keeps them or if the AAC offers to fuck with the Pac12

Both of these are distinct possibilities.
Texas St is said to be most interested in PAC. There's a game of poker/bidding going on now. I think Texas St only goes MW if the money is really good, but it could be after what they offered UNLV and others to stay.

I'm not at all sure Sac St gets offered. In a way, all of their big publicity stuff around building a new stadium feels a little desperate. They wouldn't have needed that if they already had good facilities and attendance. They do check the market box, and maybe all the funds raised gets them on the radar now.

The PAC 12 will get a TV deal. Most of the good TV draws are in the PAC 12. People want to watch Boise, Colorado State, San Diego State, Washington State and Oregon State. Nobody gives a shit about Texas State, New Mexico or San Jose. The MW is 1/2 the conference it was when they signed their last media deal.
Is the average Joe going go watch North Dakota State vs South Dakota State, Montana vs Montana State... or Texas State vs San Jose?
There is a reason the first 2 games are on ESPN this year. There is a reason the sent College GameDay to NDSU twice and to the South Dakota State / North Dakota State once. People care and watch. Viewers don't care what city it's in. Is the game good. The Brawl of the Wild is great and I watch it unless the Bison game is on
Everyone knows the best 4 teams are the Montana and Dakota schools. But they are scared to piss off the P4 who ruined them and is making them pay for the lawsuits. Cowardly and ballless.

I don't know how it will go but they will make out pretty well. They won't get AFA or UNLV cash though. Different situation. NO AFA and UNLV , no MW. No Texas State..meh..Move on to somebody else.

I think they are using that first offer as leverage/bait to get a bidding war going. AAC would offer just to lock out PAC and MWC and keep the G5 texas market mostly to themselves. PAC probably wants to see if bigger fish will bite first, but then circle back. But now they may have to make hard choices.

They have some leverage for sure..I am not convinced the conference will want to play all that hard..

UNLV has the worst ratings in both the PAC12 and Mountain West and they get 25% of the pot. That's going to drive away other teams at the first opportunity. It's funny how they are suddenly a center piece team. People conveniently forgot about the last 20 years. Soon coach will move on and then it will be a reset to mediocrity

This is just a fan poll on the mwc facebook group (13 000 mwc fans), but ndsu is the #1 choice by a pretty wide margin.
https://i.imgur.com/PO4Qb7g.jpeg
The sentiment among the fans seems to have changed substantially from 2 months ago lol.
I guess if nothing else, this would suggest ti some degree that ndsu's brand has penetrated into their markets at least more than the other schools.

If South Dakota State, Montana and Montana State were on that list, they would be 2-4

I'm not so sure. Northeast choices aren't as abundant as Southeast region.
They informally offered WKU/MTSU and it fell apart because those two want AAC/SBC eventually. Not sure if Delaware has interest at all, I think they hope for AAC (Navy and Temple nearby) or SBC (prior conference mates with ODU and JMU) as well.
After that, you start getting into FCS choices that are not nearly as attractive. Maybe Villanova, Stony Brook, or Albany. But none of those are homeruns for MAC imo.

Not in a million years for Villanova. The others maybe.
