I remember once when I was a tadpole standing in the buffet line at Bonanza in Bismarck on a chilly November night. We came right from the river bottoms and I was still clad in my orange. The lady who was in line right behind me started getting all Karen on me about shooting poor Bambis'. I just said "so I guess you're getting the salad then?" I expect all those social media flamers are strictly tofu eaters also eh?
I mean it's no Jared Allen with a spear but it's still pretty cool. I can't keep up with what offends us anymore. Didn't realize it was that "gun" he used. I figured it was the race or gender that the bear identified as that caused the problem eh.

And yes I mean this as a direct and personal insult to gun 'hunters'.
This post is easily one of those things.

For what it's worth, I grew up hunting but we ate everything that we killed...which was deer, geese, ducks, fish, etc. I've never understood the fascination with hunting animals that you don't eat. I don't have a problem with it necessarily but I don't really understand the connection to that part of hunting.
Edit: I guess that's totally not true as I think about it a bit more. Starting when I was about 10 or so, I hunted pelts...fox, coyote, badger, skunk, racoon, etc. Back then, I could make pretty good money doing that and I did. It was something that I did every day after school in the fall until it got too cold.

You can tell a lot by the bears head. I could be way off on this but I'd say he's a medium size black bear. Probably in the 300 lb range. Maybe Puck could weigh in? :)

Many of our black bears in this area are about the size of a big dog. I think 300# would be a huge bear around here.
I one time got pretty close to one when floating down Hells Canyon. Normally, they can hear you coming from literally a mile away so you just don't see them. This particular day, we were just chilling out in mid morning, floating on a very calm stretch, just letting the river do most of the work and nursing a hangover from the last evening's events. We were right up along the shore so I took a leisurely swipe with my oar to pull away and a bear jumped out of the only patch of green around, which was about 20-30 feet away. I thought she was a very small bear, maybe a cub...then two cubs jumped out and started scrambling up the rock face after momma.

I had a similar experience during a kayaking trip in Kenai Fjords NP, AK. One day while paddling in a small bay we spotted a black bear walking on the beach and paddled over to within about twenty yards and paralleled it. I got tothinking, gee I guess they can run about 35. I wonder how fast they can swim?
Then a seal popped his head up and I forgot about the bear.
