Re: Montana state playoff game
I only watched bits and pieces of their IW game as I found it uninteresting (other than IW’s 15 year old head coach wearing wayfarers in the overcast) so this assessment is totally amateur.
My take is this - there is so much focus on Troy Andersen and his ability to make plays offensively. Yes the guy is fast, high school track records and all that BS got folks slobbering on him. And sure, if he turns the corner untouched and has a straight line shot to the endzone there’s a strong likelihood that it’s going to result in a big play/TD. That’s great and all, but also not really uncommon. I’m sure you could take every opponent from our schedule and pick out a handful of guys that could do that same thing...that’s why they’re playing college football.
I think the much larger factor in this game is MSU’s defense. I just don’t think they’re really that good. I don’t think they’re going to present some magical scheme that will baffle the offense and I don’t think talent wise they are capable of hanging. They can’t stack the box because they aren’t good enough on the back end to defend Shep or our TE’s. They can’t not stack the box because we’ll bludgeon them with our running game.
When their head coach, who sounds like a swell fella, says “I’m excited to see where we stack up” that really speaks to their mindset. Montana State is just happy to be here.

If I had to bet, I'd take the over on Andersen getting a 100 yards rushing. Hopefully, I'd lose that bet.

If he does it’ll be because our offense is sluggish and they get 2-3 more possessions than they would otherwise

If you look back at the stats McKinnon did get it done. NDSU used the same defensive plan they used the year before taking the dive and pitch. GSUs QB Jabo Shaw made the right calls but was neither quick to the line or fast enough once he made the line to make any yardage while McKinnon was.
That game was close. GSU made 2 defensive back to back 15 yard penalties and lost a fumble. Thats on GSU and you deserved the win.
Yes, the game was extremely close. NDSU needed everything they had to win a close one!

Plus helped out by personal foul penalty to keep the drive going. If ManBearPig wouldn't have lost his cool, there would have been no trip to Frisco that year.

No, I know you weren't. Just dug up those numbers and am impressed with them.

If NDSU hadn’t roughed the kicker on the GSU punt the game would have closed out much earlier.
Mixed emotions with that- did make it one of the most exciting endings to watch.
