Lack of funding, renewing coaching contracts and little to no strategic marketing and growth plan for either the football or basketball programs. It was just repeat, repeat, repeat. All recent changes are too late to make a difference in the most recent rounds of reshuffling. That is negligence. Pure and simple. The fact that we have seen some of the most significant shuffling in college football in the past 3 years and we still could be on the outside looking in is testament to that. If we don't get an invite, someone beside ML should be leading the Ath. Dept. Dr. Cook will be judged more prominently on enrollment and budget. If he's smart he finds someone to lead the AD that will make athletics contribute to the desired enrollment and budget outcomes.
All true, BUT: The AD can only do what the president approves of him doing. We know that DB loved the football program, and if we hadn't hired Entz, things might be very different today. Why, though, do you think he kept ML on a tight leash re: basketball instead of trying to build it up?

UNLV turning into a dumpster fire if this escalates and more walk.

Is that in fact known to be the case? Or is it more that he said "here is what the school can afford to spend/contribute to sports, allocate it as you wish, and anything further has to be privately raised funding" ? Perhaps ML chose how to invest available funds. Not sure how our athletics budget process works, but feels odd if the President was micromanaging this on a per sport basis. That's rare at bigger universities.
President can't however authorize unlimited funding on sports, especially in an environment where there are cuts elsewhere to core parts of the university.

I think ML is a yes man who goes along to get along. He also seems to be risk averse. The decision to renew DRs contract was his alone. He has to get it approved but that’s it. If the Pres is making those decisions our system is broken.

He said it had nothing to do with NIL - he wasn't expecting any payments. He just wasn't getting the playing time he thought.
Came from NC State, now transferring again after 3 games with new team. Me thinks he is the problem.
Welcome to the new college football - this will happen alot with transfers.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Looking at twitter and a few other sites, this realignment talk sure has the folks up north on edge. The Snowbelt Confererence tweet had them in a full meltdown.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
It appears as though UNLV and AFA are remaining in the MW.

Interesting, these conferences now are both needing more schools with limited options available. The PAC has botched this whole thing quite badly.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
“The MW will dissolve or drop to FCS” will go down as one of the coldest takes in realignment lore lol further proof that people just make shit up and those appearing to be the most confident know the least
The MW that remains looks awfully fun now. So does the PAC. Somebody point at us lol

Well I guess the good news is the PAC still needs to make a move, and quickly… if those schools jumped the MW had a little time to figure stuff out. PAC needs to close on a media deal, and do it fast. Otherwise the AAC might pick up the phone…

Believe PAC signed a GoR for 5 years, and it sounds like MWC members locked in now too (though USU blew things up last time lol).
PAC rumored to be dangling more money in front of Memphis, Tulane. Rice and Texas St may be in play. They will look at SBC if AAC schools don't budge.
MWC short list rumored to include NMSU, UTEP, Texas St, SHSU. Sac St and UCD could be in play.
Not really what we wanted to happen here. Still rooting for chaos. Chaos is our friend.

Chaos is our path to FBS? Let's renew ML's contract. Relying on chaos for our path forward is brilliant. Worthy of a contract extension for sure.

Are we sure he hasn't received an extension? Sorta kidding. He likes the under the radar, unannounced, night time approach to extensions.
Maybe Scottie can ask next time they talk.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
News emerging that Texas St is being approached today by PAC, AAC and MWC.
At this point, won't be surprised if SHSU and Tarleton are up next.
Texas properties are hot. Relocate NDSU to Texas and we would have been FBS a decade ago.
Its all musical chairs in a way. We just need to hope a few seats stay open for us to slide into.
Would have been nice to join with the Montanas and SDSU, not sure if enough openings or motivation for that.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
AAC taking Texas State would make things interesting, would put the MWC and PAC fighting over even more of the same limited FBS options.
None of these FBS programs being considered have very good football, which could help us potentially. UTEP for example gets a lot of hype but they haven't done anything in football for decades. NMSU is even worse, they would be a mid FCS program.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Genuinely curious about Bison fan sentiment on this question: If, at the end of this latest round of realignment, what remains is an opening in CUSA, would most Bison fans say, "Take it. This may be our last chance for a while to get our foot in the FBS door," or, "Screw it. The MFVC is a better home"?

You go FBS by any means necessary, FCS football is dead. It is the third tier of DI and that isn't changing.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
Sac St just announced they are moving forward with a brand new state of the art 25k stadium.
Guess they found some money. There is talk of a new basketball arena also.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
Get in the door and let it slam shut behind you. Take ANY path to FBS at this point.

This^. A couple years ago, my answer would have been different, but the exodus of good FCS teams to the FBS needs to include NDSU.

AAC is interested for just that reason - to try to kneecap PAC, MWC and SBC a little bit. They don't need anyone, its just a power play if it works.

Money found Sac State when they revealed they have a plan to move forward.

Very skeptical it would happen without them needing 2, and taking SDSU as well due to non-rev sports costs.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Texas St and UTEP seem in play today.

UTEP has long wanted an invite to the MWC due to geography. The Texas market is important to television companies, which puts UTEP and Texas State on the forefront of any western expansion for either conference.

Anything, you take anything.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
I'm still hoping we get to join MW with a few friends. If that falls apart, maybe go beg the MAC for a spot.
AAC, SBC, CUSA are highly likely to stay in the southeast region, and are already throwing out names there. Afraid CUSA would take a Tarleton, UCA, EKU, or even Villanova, etc before us. Just too many other options there. As a last option if they offered it? Sure, but it won't happen any more than a B1G invite will imo.

Mountain West does need 2. You need 8 full members to be a conference. Right now they have 6 full members. Hawaii is a football only affiliate member.

Problem is they have a bunch of other options, including some FBS schools left on the board. If Hawaii goes all sports, that takes one of those slots.
We need to hope now that either MW gets turned down by some of those options, or they feel like we bring enough to the table to expand beyond 8.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Part of me still sees WasSU, OrSU, and the MWC ending up under one umbrella; otherwise, the lawyers are the only ones coming out ahead.

Feels like those bridges are burned and both sides locked in on new deals. I do suspect the lawsuits will play out a while.
I suppose there's a possibility PAC can go poach another MW school if they win that antitrust suit on poaching fees. In a way, its good for us that the situation is unstable. More chaos means more chances for something to open up.

While possible, I guess, it is unlikely the Pac will poach any more MW schools. I believe the 7 MW schools have signed a grant of rights pact. That would mean, not only they have to pay the 18 million to leave, but the GOR is not transferable. The poaching fees are a separate issue.
To be recognized as a conference you have to have 8 all sports members. The Pac has 7 currently. The MW has 6, Hawaii, as football only, does not count as a full member. I believe the MW needs to add 3 full members. Who those 3 may be is anyone's guess. The Pac may well be hunting for 2 full members, as well, as 9 is a great number for a conference.. I see 5 and maybe 6 open slots between the 2 conferences..I would guess a football only invitation would not be in the cards for anybody at this point.

Let's hope they struggle getting any takers from other FBS leagues and/or turn up their nose to the Conference USA stench......

MAC would be a great home for NDSU, but I'd greatly prefer Mountain West even with the time zone issues.

Death sentence for whoever ends up with Hawaii. That trip would suck. No thank you.

The mountain west already is. -7 (wyoming) to -10(hawaii)
It will become a 5 timezone league if ndsu or any of the texas schools other than utep are added.
Ndsu and pretty much every texas school is -6.

For me, it depends a little bit on the membership which one I'd prefer.
If we can take the Montanas and SDSU with us, that conference becomes a homerun move to me. I think MW is more likely to offer that opportunity. Plus Vegas is fun if UNLV sticks around.
