I also don’t see how that 2nd tier could survive with 85 scholarships. If the P5 pay days go away and the TV revenue goes down most G5 schools won’t be able to maintain funding that many scholarships
The only hold up I see is the future game contracts but they can be bought out. Maybe they don’t cancel them all right away but they will be fazed out IMO
Don't they make a lot of money on guarantee games with G5 schools? Maybe there are some home and homes and those might end but I still think they'd want games beyond the few P5 conferences but I could be completely wrong.

The G5 schools are the ones who make the money off the P5. Just like us when we play upper division schools.

I think what Gully is saying is no matter what happens the big boys will still want their guaranteed home games where they don't have to make the return trip so they can continue to have 7 or more home games every season. It's a lot tougher and more expensive for them to pull in a P5 team for a guarantee game than it is to get a G5 or FCS team. Even though the P5 teams are probably paying $1M+ for a G5 guarantee game they're still making money by getting all their normal home game revenue and they don't have to sacrifice a home game in the future to make a return trip.

Got it.

“There was some appetite in the meeting for possibly adding two teams even if OU and Texas decide to stay”
If they leave, Big 12 adds 4 – BYU plus 3 G5 teams. Not sure which 3, but just not on either coast, e.g. + BYU, Cincinnati, Houston (who cares about TCU and Baylor? Nobody) and one from MWC.

People are overreacting to this. It might not even happen, and if it does it will have been ALL about $$$$$ (not FB prowess). UT and OU have a harder road to the playoff in the SEC than the Big12. They surely know this, but money talks.
Top six conference champs in the 12-team playoff. So IF the P5 becomes the P4, that’s one more slot for the G5, and now you have (potentially) an even rougher conference slate within the SEC fighting for an at-large. Makes no sense if you’re serious about FB (so I admit I don’t get OU … oh wait, that’s right, $$$$). Sure, you get the best recruits, but they’ll all be competing against each other most of the time, and kids like to win games.
P5 will not split up FBS. They hate the idea of being severed from the NCAA, even though they are driving it. Giving the G5 enough to keep them engaged makes the P5 feel better about it all, and the G5 will be more than happy to oblige.
The 4-team “playoff” is what’s killing CFB. UT and OU going to the SEC is peanuts in comparison, and at some point the greed of the SEC (and P5 in general) will bite them in the ass.

The P5 wants all of the benefits the NCAA has to offer except for oversight. They are nothing more than administrators now.

The points are valid and I’m not dismissing them. Covid has changed the game. I wouldn’t be surprised if these conferences go to 2 or maybe even 1 non conference game. But I think even if they lose a home game occasionally the money paid by tv for a Oklahoma vs Miami would be much larger than a Oklahoma vs Eastern Michigan game.
They could also charge more for tickets.
Remember the NFL never played the USFL. I just don’t see how a new league would play against a different league.

the 6+6 playoff format is just an idea on a piece of paper at this point. It the landscape changes substantially there’s nothing stopping them from modifying the playoff proposal.

If they do that at this point, given where it came from and how it has been received, then yes, the G5 will hopefully dump them.
