I agree generally but they are both in an odd position. Maybe than can fill. If not they will have no choice

I'm not saying it has a strong likelihood of happening but not only do they have to fill their schedule but they will need HOME games. My guess is they will find lowly G5 teams if needed but maybe, just maybe.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Yall are right. I’m just bitter I have to wait 4 years for the next FBS game. It’s getting old. 10 years ago I didn’t care as much because we had SHSU, JMU, Georgia Southern, Jacksonville St. etc. they are all gone now to greener pastures. This FCS pasture is all grazed out.

The MW chose not to extend the agreement.

IMO that was a masterfully negotiated contract on the MWC's behalf. You wouldn't have given that up lightly. Simple answer is the PAC was demanding too much, which means they believe they're better than you. If true, where do you think we fall in their pecking order?

MW wants them to commit as full members I presume?
Feels like PAC-2 want to extend things so they have more options to either rebuild or join another conference. MW is trying to run out the clock and force them to decide now? Kind of how it looks as an outsider.

I am not sure they want the Pac2 to join the MW. The conference will be negotiating their new tv deal starting in early 2025..The existing deal expires in 2026. Some of the early reporting is that adding the Pac 2 would result in just a 10 to 15 percent bump in the deal. Neither school is in a big market..Two more mouths to feed.
The Pac 2 may wish to poach some MW schools but they are on the hook for 10 million dollars per team until 2027. They need to have at least 8 members by Aug1 2026. They are in a bit of a pickle..I guess there could be a merger under the Pac banner but that doesn't really seem to have much momentum..
My guess is they will use their war chest to buy their way into the big 12..Perhaps under a contract like SMU has with the ACC where they don't get any money from the conference tv deal for several years.

That said, make the call, and hope things fall our way. Maybe they get desperate for games.
If WSU or OSU are in the CFP discussion in 2025 I’ll eat my foot.
Yeah the point isn’t that they’re happily calling us. It’s that the closest proximity G5 conference just shut them down and their next best option is CUSA teams. They are going to be desperate to get some games no doubt.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
It will cost them more in appearance fees to get home match ups but the Pac 2 can still book games with individual MW members. One of the major reasons the scheduling agreement was not extended was it makes the MW play a 7 game conference schedule. That means some teams get 3 conference home games and some get 4..No bueno..Stanford and Cal are probably looking for some west coast games and the Pac 2 are already playing Oregon and Washington. The Pac 2 should be able to get a full schedule..It just takes money..

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Why don’t they just rebuild the pac with the Montana’s, sdsu/Ndsu and Hawaii. Thats 7 teams. We bring SUU, poly and uc Davis with and it’ll be the best conference west of the SEC.
Lakes would make it happen.
But he can’t.
Because he’s banned.

Presume this is a joke.
A million years would pass before the PAC-2 consider this outcome.
They largely see G5 as beneath them, and this would be a FCS conference merger.
They may go to the purgatory of FBS Indy status a while to sort things out.
PAC-2 desired outcomes:
1) Join a P4 conference : seems like a longshot, but not impossible
2) Rebuild PAC with the "best of G5" : also a challenge, but could happen with the right media deal.
3) Indy and/or reluctantly join MWC or AAC. Not clear their order of preference.
4) If incredibly desperate reach out to other G5 conference teams. Many of those schools could be poached to rebuild. They won't take a Kennesaw or SHSU if App St level teams are available. They also won't join a CUSA or MAC with the current alignment.
.......
9999999999999999999999999999 ) Rebuild PAC with FCS teams.

You may be correct. And it might even continue this way for a few years.
They could go the UConn scheduling route. Would put them at a huge disadvantage, and likely weaken their football programs. But I could see it as an emergency interim solution for 2-5 years while they work out a long term plan.

Well desperate times take desperate measures. They are not really in a place to have a whole lot of negotiating power. (Pac 12)

For sure, if I was ML I'd be making those phone calls just in case. But this scenario is a million to one shot with PAC. I'll win the 50-50 jackpot first.
Theres a lot of smoke/evidence we've had conversations with MW, and if they pulled teams from FCS, we'd be near the top. Best outcome for us is that PAC pulls a few MW teams to rebuild with so MW needs backfill teams.
I remain convinced we will move when the door opens. There's a chance FBS restructures with the P4 splitting from G5 and that could also open doors. Most invites happen when some cascade of events triggers it.

If were to happen I think it would be this. I get all the logistics of making it happen, and I think it will happen eventually. Good news is the PTB haven’t got us into MAC, sunbelt etc. that wouldn’t be good for NDSU.

Just to add a hypothetical question. What MWC teams would be taken to Pac12?
SDSU, Fresno St. , Wyoming for sure

I doubt Wyoming is high on their list. SDSU, UNLV, San Jose, Fresno, Boise, would be preferred, I'd think.

That's frustrating because in terms of potential competition quality, we have more upside than those teams. But sadly this isn't about producing a quality product, and we simply don't have the desired market footprint.

I forgot about Boise St. definitely although I would not be sold on San Jose state even if they are in the perfect spot regionally

Markets and media money drive almost all conference realignments. Having a very large school and fanbase, along with elite academic status helps to a degree. But it really comes down to the money. Conferences want to grow their per-school payouts. Its why teams like Rutgers got invited to the B10, not due to their on field performance.
Ultimately media money/deal will determine whether PAC is able to offer enough to rebuild with the "best of G5" or they have to accept a lesser option. How attractive are the San Diego and Las Vegas markets? Are they too saturated? Media money will also determine if PAC2 get a shot at joining an existing P4 conference. Thus far the answer has been no.

I think they will become a regular part of FCS playoffs. They also would have likely been invited to join CUSA had they not been transitioning. Rumor was the NCAA ruling that they could not skip FCS transition is what kept them out. They've been on CUSA shortlist, and are likely to get invited should CUSA decide to expand or backfill. It would be a good geographic fit.
Our best option/hope is still whatever comes out of the PAC/MWC reshuffle, or potentially the MAC.
Our best option was to join CUSA when they offered us an invite, and then use that as a stepping stone because other conferences would much rather steal from fellow FBS conferences. We blew it.

It doesnt make any sense to me. Tarleton and Stephenville Texas are so far from the mind of anyone in TX there’s no value there. Then for travel you’ll have teams flying to DFW and then bussing for over 2 hours (if there’s no traffic) to get to stephenville. Hell Boulder is harder to get to than Fargo.
Stephenville and Tarleton State are capable of supporting a D2 program and nothing more. They bring no eyeballs, no recruiting benefit and no travel solutions. There is literally 0 upside to them. If CUSA wants them it’s because they’re a (semi) warm body.

There were fairly credible stories CUSA was interested in NDSU and may have invited. They are the exception to G5 conferences in terms of geography. They are very spread out although all their members are generally south. There are schools both east and west of Tarleton so they are technically inside the current footprint. Fargo is not. I believe the closest school is WKU, and they are 1000 miles from Fargo.

I guess what I’m trying to say is I understand why NDSU isn’t on conferences’ lists but Tarleton is no better from a travel or recruiting standpoint and is much worse in every other measurable.

Because they are in the footprint of these other conferences and NDSU is not. There are schools in CUSA in all 4 directions from their campus. A couple are in the same state, granted El Paso is as far from Stephenville as Fargo is from NIU. I'm sure they is some allure to having a school in Texas so teams are in state not often for recruits to come see them. Not sure how much of a factor that is, but it may play some role. Plus if you are Liberty you can tell mom or do if far away, but we could be playing closer to your home once or twice per year.

*snip* misquote
I hope it comes out that NDSU was not going to get an invite to CUSA or any other "below NDSU" FBS conference because if we were waiting for the the ideal situation instead of jumping on an opportunity, then that is a complete lack of understanding of how the college football landscape was and is changing and a total failure on the AD and President.

Rumors that PAC is inviting Boise, Fresno, Colorado State, and San Diego State.
Might be an opening coming up for NDSU to finally make the jump.

Heard from very reliable sources that previously when SDSU almost went PAC12 (seems like a lifetime ago) that we were MW’s safety blanket. I assume they have already reached out at this point.
Don’t even want to dream that the PAC would invite us. But with Boise’s previous public comments about wanting to add us to the MW…

Yes and another thing to consider is that the PAC still needs more teams. Those four schools wouldn’t have jumped without there being a plan in place to bring the PAC fully back from the dead. Most likely scenario IMO is the PAC also picks some schools off from the AAC?

The exit and poaching fees could pay for the 4 schools FBS entrance fee. It could go a long way for the 4 schools to move up in the short term

MWC will probably take weber state, UC davis, Idaho, Tarleton st. etc and NDSU will stay at the little kids table. sigh

Good point. PAC would still need at least 2 more. We will probably hear of a few more in the coming days. I'm sure these 4 schools wouldn't have made this move without some solid confirmation on others joining the fold like you said.

I'm sure they are scrambling. Will be busy days for the MWC leadership regardless of what happens.
