From Indy, I'm within 2-3 hours of Cincinnati, Columbus, Louisville, Chicago, and probably 10 markets the size of Fargo. Go to 4 and you add in Detroit, Cleveland, Nashville, St. Louis.
Four hours from Indy is most of the makings of a P2/P5 conference.
Four hours from Fargo is ... Dickinson.

That's the tough reality.
We obviously need to leverage the msp market to be financially attractive.

I thought NDSU and SDSU would make an attractive pair for the MAC, but I guess not.

How the heck did I miss UCONN going independent a few years ago?

It's one of the things I love about living here. Do close to so many other cities. I can drive to Chicago and back in the same day to see a Cubs game. And for perspective, I'm closer to Orlando than Minot. And we are on the western edge of the MAC (only Northern Illinois is west of us). I still think the MAC could eventually consider the xDSUs. Both schools would be competitive in the conference.

You're 800 miles to Boston or Orlando; it's 750 miles Fargo to Indy.
I still say the solution is build the Western answer to the MAC (with parts from Summit and BSC).

Thanks.
It does really illustrate how logistically difficult a FBS path is.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
When I lived in Florida I was closer to Indianapolis than Fargo is. I was also only a couple hours closer to Miami than Indianapolis lol.

They left AAC for Big East Basketball, which drives the bus at UConn.
Rumors are they may cave and join a conference though, they are the only true Indy FBS team left, and don't have the deal ND does to be represented in CFP. Every other team is in a conference now.

If they were to move to the MAC I expect they would try to keep basketball in the Big East. MAC basketball would not help them be the type of program they want to be.

True, the real challenge is a lack of G5 schools nearby, which is the next logical step.
Still think we could make MWC work if they decide to expand. That conference is a bit more spread out and more open to it than most G5s. The G5s tend to want more regional clustering to reduce costs, their revenue streams are small compared to P4.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
You're correct. MWC ain't coming around anytime. Might as well jump at the MAC I guess, although still off in the boondocks.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Article in The Athletic today suggests the new CFP will possibly change yet again in two years to a 14 team config with 3 auto-bids for B1G and SEC.

That would leave three at-large spots in that 14-team model."
Sounds pretty amicable (if lopsided - just have to accept the P2 dictatorship I guess) until this part
"One high-ranking official involved in the discussions told ESPN on Wednesday that the presidents and chancellors in both the SEC and Big Ten are having conversations about whether to continue their NCAA membership. It's a move that would impact and could possibly derail the TV agreement.
"Those conversations are happening," the source said, adding some feel "pretty strongly about pulling away. I'd say very strongly."
Are these discussions real or just leverage? If you're going to leave just do it and don't be assholes

Oh, I expect the P2 will leave *and* be assholes about it, taking as much revenue as possible with them. It’s a question of when, not IF. They want to be NFL lite.

Are they bound by Title 9 if they leave NCAA?
If not, say goodbye to any sport that does not lay down black ink on the bottom line.

Title IX applies directly to the educational institution, not to the NCAA...as long as the sport is run/administered by the school, I would think Title IX would still apply....

Who is it enforced by? Or rather...What are the ramifications of ignoring it?

The schools are responsible for implementing/enforcing the regs. If they're out of compliance, they deal directly with fed OCR...theoretically, there can be consequences, but OCR usually works with the school to bring things into compliance and rarely pulls any funds from the school..

I wonder how well that would work. There are so many administrative and governance things handled through the NCAA and shared among all members. They would have to do that on their and duplicate something already done. One simple thing is the game rules. These are all NCAA. Would they create their own rule books? They could do like NAIA and Texas HS and just adopt the NCAA playing rules, but they have no say in the creation or update of the rules.
I don't ever see a complete separation from the NCAA. It's more likely to be a carved out part of the NCAA for the areas they truly are different. Not unlike CFP. It is a separate organization but it exists for one purpose. Yes they have huge amounts of revenue, but they also have huge expenses. I would be very curious to see how the men's basketball media deal would be handled. Would this new organization own that contract and get all the revenue? Would they have to share it with the NCAA if they allowed some of their members to participate? Would any changes in this space increase or decrease the broadcast rights. You would end up paying a lot of lawyers and consultants a lot of money to figure out all those logistics.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
The obvious reaction is ... "that will never happen". But with the dollars involved mixed in with human greed, well never say never.

Title IX is Federal law. It follows wherever.

But now that athletes are apparently employees, how does that work? Do you have to have an equal amount of male and female professors? Janitors? What if there are more female professors? Is that bad?
