"Baker said he believes about 100 schools might consider opting into a new subdivision"
There you go, straight from el jefe himself
So … 133 in FBS, some of which have no business being there, and a quick look at Sagarin shows SDSU, NDSU, Bobcats, Griz, Vandals, usd, SIU, Nova in top 100.
Seems about right to me tbh

Where ever they draw the line, it will be about money, and not Sagarin.
Early speculation was around $80m budgets for most schools to be able to swing it.
If they don't cap the payments, thats table stakes, and the top schools will far outspend the bottom ones.

$80M would exclude the entire MWC, no?
So I'm puzzled where the 100 number comes from. Maybe it's hard for him to just blatantly slam the door on the entire G5 lol

I don't know where the line would be, but it wouldn't include the MWC and it certainly wouldn't include NDSU. That's perfect for me. NDSU belongs with the MWC, MAC, SunBelt in the 2nd highest subdivision. That subdivision would have playoffs. Perfect.

So your saying you want to be in a conference where the noncon hoops sked doesn’t include Bemidji State, Valley City State, and Dickinson State ;)
Here’s my point - this guy represents all D1 and below, not just Sankey et al. He needs to rip the bandaid off and be honest about what they are trying to do. Hard to think of 100 schools that can make the cut (more like 60) but so far the real $$$ aspects of this are very vague, perhaps by design

I agree, 60 sounds more realistic than 100. I don't know who the last 20-30 would be, but they wouldn't look anything like Alabama or Ohio State.

It’s vague I think in part because they largely want the P4 in, and even more so because there is no upper boundaries on spending, this is about letting UGA, OSU, Bama, Oregon level teams spend as much as they please harvesting players and coaches.
It’s no limits Texas Hold’em for the top teams. The small blind may be in the $7-10m range per year. Staying competitive will likely cost far more.
I just hope the G5 do something sensible and add the top FCS leagues.

Yeah don't hold your breath, point being he's not doing anything to encourage this
But let's look at schollies. In the TP era does it even make sense to have more than 80? Like CAS said, even in a world without NIL $$ kids will portal for playing time. Hard to imagine ANY schools can hoard players now, no matter who they are. Need some guard rails here
Anyways, just killing time. Sat can't get here soon enough ...

Looks like the PAC will live and in 2 years will try to recruit enough teams to fill a conference

Depending on which teams are selected that may lead to openings for NDSU/SDSU/Montana/MSU.

If and when the ACC implodes, they will refill with schools from the AAC. The AAC will need to refill. They will look to the Belt and CUSA. Those two conferences will need to refill.
This will be quite the merry go round.

It takes 9 votes for the MW to reduce or eliminate the exit fees. It takes 9 votes to dissolve the MW altogether. It seems quite unlikely that schools who are not invited to the Pac 2 will vote for either thing. That doesn't mean that 5 or 6 teams won't leave but it will be very costly to do so.
OSU and Wazzu are in very small markets and the new Pac would be considered as a non power conference with a small tv or streaming deal.
However, let's say they take 6 schools willing to pay the the exit fees. That would leave 6 who would add at least 3 or 4 schools. That could be your opening.
If the Pac 2 takes 9 or 10 MW schools and the conference folds up, the remaining 2 or 3 schools would likely look to CUSA or independence.

Is the “rebuild in 2 years” not an obvious allusion to the MW’s exit fees? As in, they aren’t taking everyone and those that do will wait for the fee to be reduced?

It takes 9 votes to reduce the fee. Unless there is a vote to change the fee it will remain 17 million with 2 or more years notice..34 million with 1 year's notice..To get around that they could invite 9 MW members who would then vote to eliminate the exit fees altogether.
The 2 years is the grace period the NCAA allows a conference to have less than 7 members. I think the Pac 2 is looking to get more revenue from the Pac assets, split just 2 ways.
And thanks guys for my "Red" designation..I never win anything..

NDSU/SDSU/MSU/UM in the same FBS conference. That's all I ask. I don’t care which one. Get that game every year in Missoula/Fargo

Right. They’re waiting two years to pay $17M instead of $34M.

I believe you are correct but any schools that want to leave will have to declare they are leaving before July 1 of 24 to get the 17 million fee. I would guess the Pac 2 would have to have a tv deal in place before then. I don't think anybody will announce until they know what they are jumping to. OSU and Wazzu are not big market draws. The schools they would hope to poach are G5 schools. Getting that deal is going to be a very hard sell for the Pac 2. But who knows..

Hearing the MAC would prefer to add 3 additional schools to maintain their pod-style scheduling. Western Kentucky, North Dakota State, and Illinois State are schools to keep an eye on.

I think NDSU is desirable, but you are correct, the market may be too small for it to be an attractive endeavor.

NDSU is a very reputable and respected athletics department at a fine university. Fargo is a fine market in line with many other G5 markets. Their only issue is location. It's far away and perceived even further. If you are used to other markets being an hour or two away and you are 3 hours from any other market and that's only 1, it's isolated. From Indy, I'm within 2-3 hours of Cincinnati, Columbus, Louisville, Chicago, and probably 10 markets the size of Fargo. Go to 4 and you add in Detroit, Cleveland, Nashville, St. Louis.
