Absolutely pathetic to disregard one of the greatest FCS games of all time.

This game is a perfect example of how the FBS should be doing playoffs!

True, they never will though, too much money involved.
Don't expect the P5 conferences to ever give the G5 conferences more than one slot.
Even that may disappear if B1G and SEC get their way.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
We all know Liberty (insert any undefeated team here) would not do well in the playoffs, but they have earned the opportunity to prove that wrong.

Seems unlikely they will get it. Most projections say AAC/SMU is getting the NY6 slot.
CUSA absolutely killed their SOS, and the CFP committee considers that.
Tulane would have been a lock to get it over Liberty if they won the AAC Championship. JMU also if fully eligible this year and won SBC Championship.
High odds a two loss SMU team also trumps undefeated Liberty.
And Liberty has exactly ZERO chance at CFP playoffs this year, if that's what you were thinking.

I realize that.
But my point is that the playoff field needs to be large enough to include teams in that scenario. What more can a team do than win every game? They shouldn't be penalized because of their conference peers.

The argument is that there are many more deserving teams that have played a tougher schedule.
All the talking heads are saying it will go to AAC/SMU. A two loss AAC team is seen as better.
The computer rankings also say this.
Saying Liberty should get the slot is the same as saying the NEC champion should be a top 6 seed in FCS playoffs.
They will most likely get a lower bowl game vs Troy or App St. Maybe a chance they play JMU or Toledo.
Even within the G5 conferences, there's a pecking order, and CUSA is rock bottom.

Point being an unbeaten teams deserve to be included in the field, not a high seed. A larger field would accommodate this.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Yeah the situation this year highlights why the playoff field needs to expand. Undefeated G5 teams notwithstanding, All P5/4 conference champs should get a first round bye and then award bids and seed them into the top 4 after that.

The best thing the FCS has to offer is the playoffs. Its very good. I want NDSU to move up as much as the next guy. But the playoffs are fun

This post was BEFORE we all found out that an undefeated Florida State just got left out of the 4-team playoff. Total bullshit. Expansion is the right move.

And FSU is left out. There you go argument #1 for a larger field. It’s almost as if all they’re looking for out of the next 5 weeks is a promotional campaign for the 12 team expansion next year.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
next year starts the 12 team playoff!!! JMU lawyers shouldve filed a lawsuit to move it up to this year haha
Georgia and Florida State got SCREWED!

Oh, the field is expanding to 12.
But the P4 will fight for every spot.
An undefeated Liberty still wouldn’t make the field most years. There will be at most one G5 team invited.

Yep. Non-power 5 will get no more than 1. And they should be happy with that. SMU is probably the best of the rest this year and they’re barely better than South Dakota State.

Total agreement!

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Playoffs should include
Every conference champ
Top 6 in Sagarin rating
any undefeated teams
Far better to have too many teams than too few.
Many of these games could be labeled and marketed as bowl games.

Seems like a recipe for Norte Dame playing the little sisters of the poor 12 times.

Access for every conference champ in FBS will never happen. Too much money involved, and the P4 want it all.
The CFP committee, and the CFP itself is controlled by P4, they feel they are doing G5 a favor to give them one slot. That slot may be taken away under some proposals, or the B1G/SEC may just leave entirely.
The NY6 bowls will be part of the CFP playoffs next year, they are this year for the 2 semifinal games.
Most years, the best G5 from the AAC, MWC, or SBC will get a chance. The rest of the G5 will get toilet bowls, and like it. Just the way the system is.

Not a fan of South Bend College at all, but they relish a stacked schedule. I respect that about them. Of course it's all about TV exposure & money for them. For everyone if we're being honest.

This sounds exactly like the FCS playoff field accommodating the top team in garbage conferences just as filler in a watered-down field. I'm not talking about FSU. I'm talking about the non-G4 conferences.
The other thing to consider is the portal. A lot of the FBS teams will get gutted by the portal. There's also the NFL prospects who decide against playing in the bowl games. And finally, coaching changes that disrupt a bunch of teams after the regular season ends. If the playoff field gets too big, the games lose meaning.

That’s how every other sport works where the champion of a chump conference like The Summit League goes to March Madness when a better team in a big boy conference stays home.

Valid point. But what is more detrimental? Including a lesser team that gets beat bad early? or Excluding a team that nobody knows where their ceiling is? No harm in playing the damn game!

The field is 68 not 12.

And the payout structure is totally different in March Madness than football. Those lower level basketball teams are just place-holders & cannon fodder for the major conference teams who, in the end, collect the overwhelming majority of the payout shares for their conferences.
Difference is the NCAA tournament gives the perception that all teams get to share in the money. The CFP doesn't waste time with perceptions.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
As predicted, two loss AAC SMU gets the NY6 over undefeated Liberty.
Proves a CUSA team will never see the playoffs in FBS.

Proof the the FBS has already split, they just haven't told the public about it.

Wrong
If CUSA is the highest ranked conference their champion gets that G5 CFP spot
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
The conference needs to move to the second tier of college football.

It has little to do with how good the conference is. It’s about how good the committee thinks the conference champion is. The committee doesn’t rank conferences. They rank teams.

All this proves is that the committee is smart enough to do better than just counting W’s and L’s.

With a larger field, they don't have to make the controversial decision of placing more value on some team's Ls than other team's Ws.

They’ll still have to do it but the difference between 4 and 5 will be a bye week rather than access to the championship. The difference between 8 and 9 will be a home game and the decision on who gets left out will come at 11 and 12 instead of 4.

A much easier pill to swallow, IMO…
