2025 Bison Football Preview Show Part One: Cole Payton takes over as QB1 and a new look defense
https://www.inforum.com/sports/bison...w-look-defense
WDAY is previewing the upcoming season with two half-hour specials over the next two weeks.
In the first preview show, Dom Izzo sits down with Tim Polasek to chat about his expectations for fall camp and some position battles to watch over the next few weeks.
Izzo also has a feature on Bison quarterback Cole Payton, who has waited four years for his opportunity to start. Payton came to Fargo as one of the most anticipated players in the Division I era, but had to sit behind Cam Miller the last few years. The 6-foot-3 Payton visits about the "naysayers" and his own expectations he's bringing to the field.
Sam Goetzinger has a pair of features on the new look Bison defense, which will be led by some familiar faces and a bunch of newcomers. Toby Anene, Nathaniel Staehling and Ryan Jones are just some of the names that Bison fans will want to know this fall.
Goetzinger also introduces fans to the NDSU running backs, which has undergone a makeover this offseason. After Jerry Rice Award winner Marty Brown left for the transfer portal, the Bison added two transfer running backs to bolster returner Barika Kpeenu.

2025 Bison Football Preview Show Part Two: Bryce Lance's encore and The Citadel awaits
https://www.inforum.com/sports/bison...citadel-awaits
WDAY's Dom Izzo and Sam Goetzinger preview the upcoming North Dakota State football season and discuss the big storylines heading into Week One.
Here are some of the highlights from Part Two of the season preview show:
Dom Izzo's sitdown with head coach Tim Polasek. Polasek discusses the depth at the wide receiver spot, returning All-American Bryce Lance, along with standouts Mekhi Collins and Chris Harris. They also chat about the the Bison defense, which could emerge as the strength of the team early in the season. Polasek also talks about the transfers that the team added during the offseason, and those that could contribute during the year.
Izzo visits with Lance about returning to NDSU for his senior season. A year ago, he had one career catch, now he stands as one of the top NFL prospects at the FCS level. Lance chats about his decision to return to NDSU and what he has in store for 2025.

Bison finalize few starting spots for season opener at The Citadel
Redshirt freshman Nate Tastad from Rolette, N.D., will get the call on the offensive line.
https://www.inforum.com/sports/bison...at-the-citadel
The biggest loss was linebacker Alex Elliott, a transfer from the University of Minnesota, who suffered season-ending injury in practice.
Polasek said four true freshmen will at least be part of the NCAA four-game rule: defensive tackle Alijah Wayne from Omaha, offensive tackle Ryan Babatz from Buffalo, Minnesota, running back Myles Mitchell from Chicago and safety Mikhale Ford from Lincoln, Nebraska. They’ll be traveling to The Citadel. Players who haven’t redshirted can play up to four games without losing a year of eligibility.
“Elijah Wayne is not going to get dressed up for nothing,” Polasek said. “He’s got a chance to be a pretty good player for us.
He said Babatz, at 6-5 and 308 pounds, is physically ready to play right away.
“I’m really hopeful we can find some opportunity early in the year for Ryan to play,” Polasek said, “so then we know we have a formidable guy to go beyond four games.”

Bison sophomore Eli Ozick gets his kicks hitting from long distance
https://www.inforum.com/sports/bison...phomore-eli-oz
A point of emphasis for Ozick in the offseason was leg strength. He wore out a bit last year as the season went along. What once was almost a given that his kickoffs would not be returned wasn’t the case in November and December.
Polasek noted NDSU was one of the top teams in the FCS in kickoff coverage until about the eighth or ninth week of the season. New to the NDSU strength training program since last season is a “kicking force plate,” a device that gives an indicator on strength and fatigue levels.
“A lot of kickoffs over time,” Ozick said. “We worked on that in the offseason, just being more careful limiting some reps. I’m trying to get better, I’m trying to perfect my craft but at the same time I have to do it without taking way too many reps.”

Bison GameDay: The Citadel has a storied history of discipline, patriotism
North Dakota State at Bulldogs would have made for an interesting week for the Myers family from Fargo.
https://www.inforum.com/sports/bison...ine-patriotism
Only times have changed in travel plans. The Bison of that ‘32 team also had back-to-back college football games in the eastern U.S., but they also didn’t travel by plane. They hopped on a train in Fargo on a Tuesday night and arrived in the nation’s capital on a Friday morning and played George Washington University a day later.
They also didn’t return to Fargo after the game. The North Dakota Agricultural College, as NDSU was known then, got back on the train and headed north to New York for the week, before heading over to West Point, New York, to play Army on Nov. 12.

Kolpack: There's no cutting corners at The Citadel
North Dakota State's football opponent is a school unlike the Bison have ever played.
https://www.inforum.com/sports/bison...at-the-citadel
The students here are all about respect.
They walk around campus in a military shirt and pants. All walk with a command and with confidence. Nobody jaywalks, nobody cuts corners; there are crosswalks and designated walking paths for a reason.
“The structure and the discipline,” said Citadel student William Weatherford, a private. “You have to keep accountability to yourself. And once you get higher up in years such as myself, as such as my other peers, you keep track of others as well.”
For the knobs that go to the game, it will be a chance to unleash some energy and actually smile. A knob is a name given to a Citadel freshman, originally labeled because the shape of their head after getting their hair chopped looks like a door knob.
It’s easy to tell the knobs from the upper classmen on campus. The older kids look much more relaxed, talkative and somewhat social. The knobs walk straight ahead with a purpose; no smiling, no levity.
“As you can see, none of them look happy,” Weatherford said. “That won’t happen ‘til March. I wasn’t happy until the end of the year and you’ll see that happen with these guys.”

Nathaniel Staehling’s shot finally comes, Bison linebacker to make first start
Staehling was named a team captain last week, news that nearly brought him to tears.
https://www.inforum.com/sports/bison...ke-first-start
“If you had all of our mike linebackers over the last 10-15 years go through the NFL Combine, I’m not sure Staehling wouldn’t score first or second,” Olson said. “He’s almost 235 pounds with a 40-inch vertical. That’s pretty darn rare. I cannot wait for him to get his shot.”

DeLaurent has moved on and turned the reigns over to Jax Leatherwood, a 6-foot-8, 253-pound giant that won the job after transferring in this past offseason. Payton Brown is the top running back, who was the team's leading rusher as a freshman last season with 310 yards and five touchdowns. He's the older brother of Bison freshman quarterback Preston Brown, who hails from Hillsboro, Missouri.

Sunday Slants: Four takeaways from NDSU's win over Tennessee State
https://www.inforum.com/sports/bison...ennessee-state
First down — Barika Kpeenu looks like a different running back this year. The West Fargo Sheyenne product has waited to be the guy and looks the part so far. Kpeenu is running hard and not going backwards on any runs. He’s had 22 carries so far this year and not lost any yardage. He’s breaking tackles, which has been common for all of the backs so far this year.
Second down — The Bison linebacker core of 2017 may go down as the best in school history.
That group consisted of Chris Board, Nick DeLuca and Jabril Cox, all three that played in the NFL. There’s a way to go before we know about the 2025 group, but it’s safe to say this year’s starting linebackers are as athletic as Bison fans have seen in a while.
Third down — Reis Kessel is going to be a problem for defenses.
Fourth down — The freshmen are playing.
Alijah Wayne made an impression for the second straight week, with 2.5 tackles for loss, to go along with a sack in the first game. It would seem Wayne is going to play all season, but he still has two more games before a decision needs to be made.
Safety Mikhale Ford made his collegiate debut as he was returning a punt late in the game as did offensive lineman Ryan Babatz, who was in for the last few drives up front. Running back Myles Mitchell scored his first collegiate touchdown, which came after a 21-yard run.

Bison football to get largest payday in school history for 2027 Las Vegas game
https://www.inforum.com/sports/bison...las-vegas-game
NDSU will be paid $1.25 million for its 2027 matchup against Montana State in Las Vegas , according to the signed contract, which was obtained by WDAY. The game will be played over Labor Day Weekend at Allegiant Stadium, the home of the Las Vegas Raiders.
NDSU will receive some other frills in the contract. Once ticket sales reach $3.3 million, ESPN Events, Montana State and NDSU will receive an equal third of revenue. There is the potential for additional revenue to be paid to the schools as well.
The Bison will receive 500 tickets for family members of the players and staff, along with seating for up to 300 people for the Gold Star Marching Band. The school will also receive two luxury suites inside Allegiant Stadium that seat 20 people.

Re: Official Bison Podcast thread (local media, radio shows, national radio, etc)
Griffin Empey may be the most unlikely candidate to be 'Chief Ram' of the Bison offensive line
The former walk-on has played three different positions in just 16 career games at North Dakota State.
https://www.inforum.com/sports/bison...offensive-line
Griffin Empey may be the most unlikely to have that moniker bestowed upon him. A former walk-on (much like Mauch), but at 6-foot-3, 298-pounds, perhaps not the most imposing figure. It hasn’t bugged Empey, who in less than two years of playing, has earned the nickname.
In the season opening game in Charleston, Empey was flexed outside to play right tackle for the first time.
“It wasn't really a conversation,” Empey said. “It was more just, can you play tackle? And I said, yeah, sure. And then I just did it, so it's exciting. It's not anything brand new. I understood when you come here, you have to learn the offense from all five positions.”
