You're not following the discussion too well. Last I checked, the MVFC isn't an FBS conference trying to get its Champion into the 4 team FBS playoff. Try to keep up.

i was talking about how making fun of Co champions, when your own conference did the same damn thing...
For the record Im happy neither TCU or Baylor made the playoffs, so carry on.

In the era of making money off of playing one more game...it amazes me that the Big12 CHOOSES to remain under the number of team to play a conference championship game.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Remember. Texas does things on their own. Screw this conference thingy. BXII Hwat? Longhorn Network 4 Life!

I wasn't making fun of co-champions. My original statement was that FBS Conference Champions have a "high probability" of getting selected for the 4 team playoff. The response was that there are 4 spots and 5 conferences. My counter to that was to point out that one conference had co-champions. I haven't heard anybody deny that impacted Baylor and TCU. Back to what Strongman posted, the current system gives 100% of the P5 programs a chance to win the National Championship. Any failure is on each specific program. If Northwestern goes 13-0 and wins the B1G, they should expect to be in the playoff. Marshall could have been 13-0 and they would not have been selected. The criteria used by the committee would almost certainly have kept them out. It's true for really any of the G5 conferences and their programs.

They're getting $20 million per school per year in TV money right now, without a championship game which is on par with the other 4 conferences who do play one. They're probably not going to get an extra $40 million in TV money which is what it would take at minimum if they're going to add 2 schools and play a title game.

So another game (2 more teams)/week with ad revenue, plus a conference championship, probably in Jerry world, televised. I think with the right 2 teams they'd be just fine. They need to get rid of the Longhorn crap and I would bet there would be more money in it for everyone but Texas.

You are probably correct about the money. I THINK there are more scenarios that result in their Champion getting screwed as long as the playoff remains at 4 teams. I know there were people who rolled out a scenario this year where TWO Big 12 teams could have gotten in but I think that was pretty far fetched. In the end, 13 games give you a better chance than a 12 game resume does. IMO.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
As a fan, I really do like all the late season games we play on the road to the title game. What could be better than Saturday morning on ESPN with almost NO other competition on TV. Football fans all over the nation will be getting their football fix by watching the BISON!

Re: A new and better FBS thread
SO.
if BIG 12 takes Boise State & BYU..... Mountain West could add NDSU.
MWC Mountain:
Wyoming
Colorado State
Air Force
Utah State
New Mexico
NDSU

There is 250 millions reason why the playoffs will be expanded to 8 teams--then to 16 team very soon.

Go to eight teams, get rid of conference championship games.
Oops, didn't mean to post that as admin.

They should do that with 8 teams. 3 neutral site games is too much for one team/fanbase.

I agree. Especially trying to fill large venues.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Theyll never go to 16, since the big schools could split someday.

Ohio State and Oregon fans did it this year, but OSU was close to home for the first one.

Bah at the conference championships. I was strictly talking an 8 team CFP. But I get your point. Change the locale of the conference championship game to the better conference record team then :) (Not happening)

Re: A new and better FBS thread
I've heard fbs talk on all 3 kfgo shows and wday. And numerous times by PA & kfan. The momentum is here.
I hope our new AD and pres are calling mwc and mac.
4 straight titles. It's been proven

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Many Oregon fans had to choose between going to the Rose Bowl or hoping they could attend the championship game so the same fans weren't at all 3 postseason games.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Anyone listen to the coach K interview on the Bison media blog? He thinks we are near the end of FBS games due to the new playoff system and our success against FBS teams. I know this isn't ground breaking news, as there has been a lot of talk about these very same issues on this board before, but this is the first time I have heard an official from the university confirm this suspicion.
Guys, if we can't find any FBS teams to schedule us in the future, then I really feel it is time the athletic dept. take a hard, long look at moving up. I'll give you my reasoning and thoughts on why I think a move up would be in the best interest of NDSU in the long term.
If we were to get a FBS invite it would be from a G-5 conference, but I don't believe landing in a G-5 conference, in and of itself, would be a good reason to move up. I don't believe playing teams from the MAC or the MWC would draw more fan interest or greatly increase our profile in the football world than staying in the MVFC. The prize at the end of the season is certainly no reason to move up either as a lower tier bowl game would be less exciting than a FCS national championship, IMO. The primary reason to move up would be to create an avenue to be able to play good P5 conference teams. Playing (and beating) these teams will greatly increase the profile and stature of NDSU in the football world, increase fan interest in the program, and increase booster contributions and members. The beauty of being in the FBS is we could play more than one P5 conference team a year.
If we stay in the FCS and aren't able to schedule games with FBS teams, I fear we will be forever stuck in mediocrity and eventually the fan base will become bored with only playing FCS teams. For me personally, I would rather NDSU play Iowa State than Montana, even if Montana may be a better team.

So the catalyst to moving up is the thought of us not being able to schedule a FBS team in the future?
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
Once we are in the FBS, we have the chance to possibly schedule 2 for 1s with P5 schools.

honestly I dont know how long a lot of FCS teams will survive long without an FBS paycheck, do you have any idea?
selfishly, I hate reading those comments by Klieman. Theyre really disturbing. FBS games, to me, are the pinnacle of the season, especially up against a P5 school. Going to Montana is fine and dandy...but thats after this year who knows when the next match up will be scheduled. EWU does nothing. The "payback" factor is over..its been 5 years. Going out to roos field vs 6000 opposing fans is boring as fuck.
If NDSU can somehow save its own ass, not worry about move up partners, and find a way into ANY G5 conference, start playing P5's on regularly..and even hosting some of those games...is where Id love to see this program be.
Losing the FBS games would be a major blow to the program

oh man. even if, ever, NDSU has the opportunity to host a bottom feeding P5 team...itd be the biggest home game in school history

If you add "regular season" to that statement, I would tend to agree.

I think the very fact you see schools scheduling multiple FBS paychecks a year at the expense of missing the playoffs is proof enough it will be a killer for some.
I think the NCAA will have to step in and figure out a way to make the playoffs more profitable, like everyone is seeded and higher seed always hosts, unless they can maximize return by ceding hosting, with schools splitting playoff revenue rather than paying the NCAA. At least that softens the blow.
I can't think of any other way. The NCAA can't make schools schedule FCS. That doesn't make any sense. There are enough FBS programs that need the money. It would make much more sense to make them take care of their own level first.
The valley should be positioning themselves as one conference for all sports, first of all. Then they should positioning themselves as the next G5 conference as a whole. Someone should be in Bristol figuring out how they are going to help. That is a better solution then one of the crappy conferences out there.

This is still the Valley we're talkin about...over half of the teams can barely sell out half of their games. ISUB, Mo St, USD, WIU, SIU(?) ISUR(?)
Its a basketball conference far and away. NDSU needs to be using its cash cow and finding a way to cash in with it, which happens to be the sport that rakes in billions for the NCAA.
Yeayea, new basketball arena to compete (sort of) with other valley teams...its still all about football. Id hope NDSU is looking around and covering their own rear first before planning on making a G5 move with the Valley.

So when you go to an away game you seem to be more concerned with fan base attendance than you do the game itself. Good thing is---you dont have to go.

I think we need to focus on basketball. Given the fact we are in a winnable conference we have a chance to make the big dance on a regular basis. Once we do that we will become more of a household name just by being on the bracket. Win a few games on a regular basis and it will make the entire program more appealing, for a move up including football

Yes, PL, I really believe that if we can't schedule any more FBS games in the future, the program will be stuck in mediocrity and fan support and interest in the program will become stagnant. Like it or not, the FBS wins are what put us on the map, not only in the football world, but with our own fan base as well. The FBS games have generated an excitement and interest about the program that FCS games just can't replicate. Even though the playoff and championship games are exciting as hell, the FBS games are the catalyst that drives the engine.
Think about when this program really took off. Was it when we won multiple national titles in the 60's, 70's, and 80's? No. It was big and there was a buzz in the air about Bison football, but it wasn't near the level it is now. Was it when we started to play FCS football? No. This program took off when we played and nearly beat the Gophers in 2006. That game put us on the football world map and generated an excitement about Bison football that had never been seen before, even bigger than the national championships of the 80's.
There is an old saying in business, which I am sure you are very familiar with. "If you are not moving forward, you are moving backwards." I look at a move to FBS in this light. The FBS games are the games that move this program forward. Not to say that FCS games aren't fun and exciting, but they no longer move the program forward.
