That relationship seems like a good hook to keep him in the boat considering his bro is the best demonstration of next level potential at the QB position. That with the fact he already flat out said thanks but no thanks before even meeting with Nebraska in person gives me the warm and tinglies. Nebraska is likely set at QB anyway so if he turned down Iowa State at QB and Nebraska for anything else, seems like NDSU is in a good spot retention wise.

Cole Payton leads NDSU through transition to the FBS... and wins their first National Championship at the next level.

Haha! I'm more than happy with the first part. Being in the top 10 at the next level would be just fine for me. For the time being...

Just trying to keep the ridiculous progression of NDSU QB accomplishments going.

not to drift thread in a different direction but I'm still waiting to have that RB that is a top 1-5 RD NFL pick like David Johnson. Figured it would have happened by now.

Looking back just makes you appreciate how much of a freak athlete Johnson was and how lucky we were Farley never used him effectively enough against the Bison.

We’ve had good backs (Crock, Bruce, etc), but we haven’t got that sure thing yet. The kid from Fargo in next years class might be really good.

We need a Lamar Gordon. Third Round draft pick

It makes me nervous when these commit threads light up the day before signing day....
No "I'm taking my talents to Rutgers" tweets from Payton yet though.
For anyone that doesn't get the reference or just wants to have a good chuckle reliving an infamous Bisonville 30 minute meltdown: http://www.bisonville.com/forum/show...618#post826618

Re: 2021 Verbal: Cole Payton
Gotta love that article on Cole. Resembles the previous great starters for us in personality which can only be good. I guess we need to get thru 2021 as it would be extremely hard for him to start in 2021.

Re: 2021 Verbal: Cole Payton
At this point the only question is by how many will he break the all time QB wins record? 6? 8? It'll be nice to own the D1 record outright. Damn you, Kellen Moore.

Not a hard choice for a QB talent when you consider the Bison have placed 4 times more QBs in the NFL in the past 20 years than has Nebraska

Something tells me that had Nebraska offered him Cole would've found a way to overlook that disparity in recent pro QB prospects between the two schools. ;)
Alas they didn't and he didn't.

I more or less agree with you. Still, the recency of NFL draftees coming out of NDSU could certainly impact the mind of an 18-20 year old. Unlikely either Zeb Noland or Quincy Patterson came to Fargo for the weather.

Yea, Zeb would have probably ended up at Bama if NDSU hadn’t offered him.

That's certainly what that super amazing awesome Youtube video of Iowa State's loss to Oklahoma would indicate!!

You are absolutely correct. Bama Pie just might have had a suitable intern position for him.

Frost attempted to set up a phone call with him after the championship game and Cole declined to listen to him. I cannot say if Frost was gonna offer and if he was if it would be to play QB. But I don’t think it would’ve been as easy as just offering him to get him to flip

No, if Patterson is solid, makes a lot more sense to shirt him to give him time to learn and get stronger. See Brock, Carson, Easton, Trey, etc.......
You only pull the shirt if Patterson is a liability.

Brock never should have sat behind Mohler for the record. Should have been day one as well.
Easton would have been if not for Carson being Carson.

Between the new rules about redshirts and the one-time transfer, I doubt there'll be many freshmen who don't get a chance to see the field if there's an opportunity.

He redshirted during the 2009 season behind Mertens, I think.
As it relates to his 2010 competition with Jose, by the middle of the season, coaches seemed to want to move on from Jose and start Brock but everyone forgets that he had a hard time staying healthy. He seemed brittle that year, which seems absurd now that hindsight shows us the toughness of his next three years.
What has always bugged me is that Mertens was never allowed to run, which was central to his game. The story was that there was no good backup option if he got hurt. That makes sense to me for the 2008 season but for 2009, Brock was there. My guess is that he just didn't show IT during practice his true freshman year.

Coaches need to put the player on the field that gives the best chance to win and has the most positive upside. After the Zeb debacle this past season my confidence in the coaches to make the right decision is greatly diminished.
