San Diego St to the PAC is the exception, not the rule, and it created a huge mess for them with all the letters and parsing of whether they are actually leaving or staying. Normally nothing is said until you have a deal to move. Just creates headaches if it doesn’t work out with conference mates and the fanbase.
Nevada and Fresno were invited and accepted over the course of a day or so. Of, course they had already been vetted as potential expansion targets much longer. I do believe that NDSU has been vetted for quite a while as a potential expansion candidate by all the G5 conferences. However, vetting and getting are two different things.
Fans rarely, if ever know, when the moment will come until it happens.

There are many opportunities for the parties involved to have casual conversations about this. I've volunteered at enough NCAA basketball tournaments to see these conversations happening at the hotel bar, in the lobby, in the seats at the open practice, etc. I even got to listen in to a couple that were very interesting. They know each other at that level fairly well. Some of the informal conversations may go through third parties as well. The NDSU AD may be good friends with an associate AD at Memphis. He may have at one time worked at Grand Valley State with the head volleyball coach who is now at NC State. That coach is married to the sister of the Communications Director for the MWC. There are close connections everywhere.
I guarantee the MWC leadership is very aware of the value of the NDSU program and what they would bring to the conference. They also know the limitations. The NDSU AD publicly proclaiming any specific discussions or intentions will have no impact on any future decisions made. It's only the fact fans feel compelled to know this information so they feel can feel better about themselves.

You know who yapped a lot about changing conferences? San Diego State. It gained them nothing.

Frankly, it did quite the opposite for SDSUred. They're a bit "in the wind" right now.
I'm yet to see any public negotiation of a business transaction (and that's what this is) turn out well for any party involved.

Someone can feel free to correct me if I’m wrong here, but maybe they are trying to do right by their current conference (MVFC) and not risk passing them off if it doesn’t work out. Kinda like how SDSUr did with the MW and now they are getting the raw end of that deal.

At this point, I am not sure who is getting the raw deal. I don't think anybody was pissed off that SDSU was likely leaving..That has been a pretty open secret for a year now. This is just an issue of exit fees. I am pretty sure things will work out where both parties found some sort of compromise.

It would be interesting if SDSU announced PAC tomorrow if MWC would hold to their stated 17m exit fee, or go with the 34m number since they claimed they weren’t officially leaving.
The letters make it clear both sides had lawyers trying to angle for the best result, with the SDSU side trying to legally “give notice” without officially leaving.
Part of me thinks MWC is taking the current approach because they can withhold the conference payout and have a “bird in hand” on at least a chunk of the money. It’s setting up to go to court or settlement if they intend to collect the full $34m

I am not sure how it will go but I would not be surprised if it ends with SDSU leaving in June 2025 with a 17 million dollar exit fee. Texas and Oklahoma waited a couple years. They can work something out.

If NDSU does get a fb only invite to the AAC or MWC, what does Lakes complain about then?

Oh how great it would be to come to Fargo halfway through October to watch NDSU take on Duluth, Mankato, St Cloud, etc on a Friday night at Scheels arena, go catch a Saturday football game, and then head right back to Scheels for the night cap.
Sounds glorious.

The school will be responsible for covering fees that the conference expensed over legal work during a letter exchange with SDSU about its possible withdrawal.

Seems smart.
If SDSU announces next month they are leaving for PAC in 24, they would theoretically owe 34m now.
My guess is maybe it all plays out in 2025 though. Everything depends on PAC media deal.

SDSU is unlikely to pay a 34 million dollar exit fee. Even if they were to receive an invitation from the Pac or the Big 12 they wouldn't leave until after the 25 season..Same goes for all the MW members. The deadline to leave after 24 has passed. It also sounds like the Pac may be getting a sufficient deal to remain at 10. I don't see any expansion in the interim but the MW will probably enter various negotiations with providers for the next deal in 25 after the current one expires in 26. I don't know how this plays out for NDSU but it certainly doesn't appear that anything will be done quickly.

The whole situation still feels very fluid to me.
If the money is low, and Colorado decides to leave, that adds a new wrinkle. Outside of that, if the PAC needs SDSU for their media deal, they will be added. If the per school payout is higher without them, they likely won't.
So the question is - would adding SDSU raise or lower the average payout per school? That is the determining factor.

I don't know whether SDSU would increase the value or not. It was supposed to be SDSU and SMU and that could have made a difference. However, if any MW school wants to leave they would be on the hook for 34 million to leave in 24 and 17 million to leave in 25 provided they give notice by June 30 2024. If Colorado leaves the Pac they can still add SMU. I, personally, don't think the PAC will lose any schools though they will probably sign a fairly short term deal..Maybe 5 years..At any rate this all delays any expansion by the MW for a few years, if then.

MWC do you know how the exit fee works for SDSU if they just wait until the end of the current TV contract in 2026? Would they get out for free or would it be a formula based on the next TV contract for the MWC?

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Delaware making FBS noises. Story behind a paywall (sorry). Excerpt:
Quote:
“An institution’s ability to make the jump from FCS to FBS shouldn’t be solely based on the dollar amount it can afford to pay for entry,” Rawak said, ”but rather the institution’s investments over time and its infrastructure to support the success of its student-athletes at that level. An institution could make such a greater impact on its student-athletes by investing money into sport performance or academic success to be ready to reclassify rather than it just being an entry fee.”
...
Delaware had a $48 million budget for athletics that is greater than many schools in the FBS’ Mid-American, Sun Belt and Mountain West conferences and Conference USA, according to USA Today’s 2022 college finances report.
UD elected not to submit information this year for the Knight-Newhouse college athletic database, from which USA Today gathers that information, because no state appropriations support the athletic department's operating budget. Delaware Online/The News Journal submitted a Freedom of Information Act request to obtain that information. It was denied by the university.
As for the proposed new UD facility, Rawak would only say that Delaware is “actively fundraising” but not yet in a position to publicly reveal its plans despite being, she said, “incredibly committed to making this happen.”
The bold is curious; I thought NDSU had the lowest state dollars for athletics in FCS; "no" is pretty low.

Boise State is getting ... creative?
Quote:
Now, Boise State is going back to its creative roots, introducing a new "We Win, You Win" ticket promotion on Monday for its upcoming season.
Fans that purchase a $125 limited-edition ticket to Boise State's home opener against Central Florida on Sept. 9 can earn a complimentary ticket to its next home game against North Dakota – but only if Boise State wins. Whoever attends the next game with the complimentary ticket will receive another one if Boise State is victorious again.

You're rolling the dice that BSU wins out the home schedule and you get a home season pass for $125.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Unless they change the bylaws the fees would be calculated the same way. The amount is based upon the total distribution which includes tv money, basketball credits, bowl payouts etc.. for the preceding fiscal year. If any school left before June 30th 2026 (the end of the current tv deal) they would still be subject to the same exit fee formula.

Not sure how or even if this affects the PAC media deal (to be finished) but Stanford's president resigned today.
That media deal is the constipation stopping up any potential western conference reorganizations.

This fact is why I think the notion of paying athletes large salaries outside of P5 is a bit ridiculous. There's literally no "profit" for the schools, its all subsidized.
