Re: A new and better FBS thread
yea yea MWC , most of you are scared of NDSU walking in Day 1 and being top dog with Boise State for Football. its ok to be scared, we get it, you will be fine.
Mountain West should WANT an infusion of new blood with a Fanbase that actually cares about their program and would light a spark under the rest of the MWC fanbases.
So buckle up, WE COMING!!!
Ron Counts interview on 1660am today was dang good along with his twitter comments, his emails and Boise State bigtime donors who are on board wanting to play NDSU in Football............ we good, NDSU ADMIN needs to be calling Gloria the next 3 days, every day!!
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
The MW does absolutely care about football. The football world cares, pretty much, not at all about MW football. Boise got a deal that the MW believes only applied to the last contract. Boise believes in will last into perpetuity. In addition Boise has wanted to leave the conference since the moment they joined. You should also note Boise isn't all that great in football anymore but they have spent the bread to get good in basketball.

Boise is by far the least liked school in the conference these days. They are sue happy and not very good any more.
If you wish the only reason the MW wouldn't add you is because they are afraid of you, have at it.

Ok I will.... NDSU vs Boise & NDSU vs Wyoming an NDSU vs Colorado State would be 3 Instant Rivals for NDSU!

Well okay then..All settled.
You do know that all the other schools you are not interested in at all have votes on expansion. You would need 8 in favor.

I do not think, your admittedly fine football program changes the perception about MW football at all. Coming aboard a conference who's only notoriety, such as it is, comes from basketball, in no way enhances your chances to be recognized as a national football program.
As I have said before (ad nauseum, I confess) the only reason joining the MW makes any sense for you is if you really, really, really want to play these schools. This is not you ticket to the high life.
There’s only one person here that thinks along the lines you are arguing against. Most have a pretty clear understanding of what life in the mountain west would be like. Not all sunshine and roses but at least we aren’t playing against Auggie and at Thomas. The argument isn’t that NDSU would be some major upgrade for the conference, again only one person here keeps spouting that. The case trying to be made is that should the MW need to add, NDSU may be the best option available.
I will say that for as much as you’ve talked about the media deal and the final decision coming down to dollars (which I agree with), it doesn’t compute for me to hear you say that it doesn’t matter where the money comes from to finance the conference…
And over the past decade the Mountain West is averaging 2.3 teams in the tournament per year
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
Football is the major driver of the "tiny" tv deal, absolutely. What I was talking about was national perception in the college sporting world. The football games are played late at night with almost no one watching east of Colorado. Basketball doesn't draw great ratings either but MW basketball is far more respected. That doesn't mean we will get more tv money..We won't. Not enough viewers have interest. You don't add a whole lot of viewers to the mix
I would posit that any national interest there is in NDSU nationally would fade considerably playing in a minor conference that doesn't generate much football interest to begin with. The sports media world in based primarily in the east.
It is a different ball game out here.

Hearing excitement about going to Wyoming for a game makes me think of the joke about a Parisian and a Muscovite each hopping on the Paris-Moscow train line, going in opposite directions. By mistake, they both get out in Warsaw. The Parisian goes, "Sacre bleu, I had no idea Moscow was such a shithole." The Muscovite gets out and says, "во даёт! Paris is even more beautiful than I imagined!" In this context, I think El Chapo would be the Russian, and I'd be the Parisian.
I would be 10x more interested in going to either of the Montana schools. Of course, that would change if NDSU joined the MWC but still.

Speaking of. When you guys come onboard to replace San Diego State you will inherit their protected rivalry games. Every season you would play Utah State and Hawaii. The rest of the conference schedule would be fairly random.

You could tamp your expectations down a bit. We did lose 3 games last year in the FCS
And squeaked by a few games also. It’s hard for you I know. If you said we could win 8ish games then I’d more than agree with you.

Macomb(at least spell it right) is already gone.
Cedar Falls(not Cedar Rapids) is generally considered a rival we want to bring with us, and Sagarin ranked higher than 6 MWC teams.
Vermillion is top 3 in all sports attendance and a travel partner. Not last place in MWC according to Sagarin.
Terre Haute is visited once every 2 years in a single sport for a cupcake win.
Grand Forks is top 3 in all sports attendance and a travel partner. Ahead of 4 MWC in Sagarin.
If we get an invite, I hope at least 1 of these come with.

I doubt that very much. Any time there is an addition/subtraction from a conference one of the first things to change is scheduling and protected rivalries/travel promises. It goes with the territory of expansion/change.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
If we get into MW the basketball schedule would be immediately upgraded for men.
Home games against Mountain West teams would instantly be better competition than Summit.
We could still schedule home and homes with Jackrabbits, UND, USD and Saint Thomas pre-conference.

You are probably right but the contracts are for the next 3 years. The reason SDSU got stuck with that weird mix was because the other protected rivalries were pretty ingrained. I don't think Wyoming would give up CSU for anybody. NV/UNLV, BSU /USU etc..Those are really long term rivals. You would be the new kid interlopers just looking for a stepping stone to some other conference..You just get what you get..

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Some of the away game for football this past year were pathetic according to attendance and atmosphere....
I was at Indiana State and Southern Illinois - attendance was 4185 at ISUB but they probably counted the players / coaches and referees to get to that number. Not exactly a big-time atmosphere.
Southern said there was 4575 but there no way there was that many...half the crowd I saw from Illinois was nearly frozen before the game even started.

As much as I want a full conference invite the more we keep talking on here I see a football invite as the most likely scenario. We could play BB games in the Fargo dome but are we really going to see 9k fans to every BB game?

Definitely, but it takes a few years to get those on board typically, its not immediate.
My pushback was on those living in an alternate reality where we waltz thru MWC undefeated and grab the CFP first year.
We'd be incredibly fortunate to see the CFP in the first 5 years, its not super likely. Would take amazing results and luck also. There's 60+ established FBS teams vying for that spot. Some of them are very very good, and have much bigger budgets and fanbases.
It's also not entirely decided on the field, it comes down to how a ranking committee views your results vs all the other G5 teams.

Why is NDSU and Boise a rivalry? The schools aren't similar. They aren't nearby. There isn't any history. I am not following here?

Because they will know the NDSU is their big competition in the MWC. Rolling them on the blue turf will send a message

It's all relative though. Sagarin had them ranked #52 last year.
They'd be a lot tougher than Arizona was last year, and a really big challenge for us.
I don't think they are necessarily a CFP or even MWC title contender right now.
Fresno St at #36 is on paper the best MWC team until proven otherwise.

I would say Fresno has been the most consistent football program in the conference over the last 10 years. Boise State has been okay most years but not at all dominate any more. There is more parity in the conference these days..

Keep the Utah State game but trade SJSU the Hawaii game for the New Mexico game.
NDSU | USU = Morrill Trophy to celebrate the Land Grant Act.
NDSU | New Mexico = 1889 Trophy to celebrate ND statehood and the founding of UNM.

For basketball, I think I prefer the SHAC layout really. It could use an expansion, but I like the seating there better. Maybe the dome works as a temporary home if we sold out everything.
If we go MWC, it should be all sports I think. We get even more upside there in basketball and other sports. Being one foot in with football feels like we'd be a junior member, and being stuck in Summit would kinda suck then.
Not even sure if MWC would allow us to join football only, but I guess its more likely there than other conferences since they've done it before. Its kind of rare overall for FBS.

The point is MW isn't a ticket to the big time FBS, but let's be honest about where our current ticket takes us. And I hope like hell none of those places listed move up with us. SDSU is the one travel partner I'd grudgingly understand. As for those I listed.... Hellllllll nah.

I wonder if SDSU is ready and willing. The others don't seem likely at all to me. We aren't going to merge MVFC with MWC.
It's a great FCS conference, but lets be real, it's not that close to MWC level.
Now if someone said let's merge MAC and MVFC, maybe that could be viable in some respects.
I'd also agree if people said we would run the table in MAC year 1. Big difference between these conferences.

Lots of land grants in the MW. NV, USU, WY, CSU, and Hawaii. R1 High research schools. NV, UNLV, USU, CSU, NM and Hawaii.
You do have that in common with several MW schools..I think that helps your case..

As for FBS, I'm more with NDSU's leadership: The AAC seems like a better fit for NDSU's budget and time zone. That said, NDSU is a beggar in this, not a chooser.
Time zone is a little better, but I'd be a little shocked if AAC gave us any real consideration. They are even more top 25 media market and basketball focused than MWC. I think they have other FBS schools nearby that would jump for an open spot, and I can't recall them ever inviting a FCS school. Pretty much the top dog in G5 FBS, and they can rob other conferences outside of MWC. They also replaced 3 departing schools with 6 new ones, and have less of a need to backfill again if someone leaves. They may just stand pat.
In terms of budget/money, the AAC has a two-tiered payout system. The old legacy schools are getting $7m, while the newbies they invite are only getting $2m payouts. I don't see how thats better. We'd have to come up with even more cash up front, unless I'm missing something. Maybe the MWC payout goes down some, but I doubt it will be below $2m.

Apparently this Martinson person has never heard of a phase out. If his only concern is that some people near the income limit may manipulate their earnings to take undue advantage of a program that is not a hard thing to fix.

Highest endowment in the state – check
Highest research status in the state – check
Most D1 athletic success in the state – check
Lowest dependence on state for D1 athletics funding – check
Biggest city in the state – check
It's obvious where to invest for the future of ND, no? It should be

The North Star Promise is a disaster waiting to happen and the exact opposite of what should happen, but it will be great for the flagship Dakota schools. As an MSU-Mankato alumni we are screwed hard, the volume of students on the fence academically attending will skyrocket. Its like a free test drive. We effectively accept everyone already, so this will further lower university profile for acceptance rate, average ACT, average GPA, and graduation rate. More great news for us is kids with parents making over the threshold will push their kids to go to other schools with better academic profiles. Side note, the UofM will not be effected because of the academic profile required to attend.

Yeah forced rivalries are lame and hokey. Gonna take some time to ramp up some bad blood/sibling rivalry wherever we go, just like when we went D1. Just how it is, not worth trying to start something that isn’t there.
