Either way they will probably need to add 2 new schools and possibly 2 new sports to have an extra buffer.

That is different than previously when they consistently stated they felt that FCS was the right spot for NDSU and they would continue to evaluate their spot in College Athletics. Those might not sound that different but to me they signal movement internally within the athletic department. From my perspective, they are no longer leading with the message that FCS is great and we feel it is right for us. That message has definitely been downplayed recently. It's not that they are bashing the FCS, which they can't and shouldn't do but to me it does signal that they believe that the long term future for NDSU is not in FCS football (as it currently is constituted) and they would like to find a home that more aligns with their football program aspirations. As many have stated, an invite isn't fully within their control but the message has always been within their control and I think that they have struck a much better tone publicly recently. Now we'll see how all this plays out.
I am worried the transfer portal may take a bite out of future success because we won’t be able to keep the elite talent from leaving for bigger $$$. Our development system is really uprooted when kids can leave on a whim

Maybe, or maybe there is some adjustment to the transfer portal that evens things out a bit and there is more predictability. Everyone is dealing with it. Those who adjust best will rise and those that don’t won’t. The transfer portal isn’t going to affect NDSU anymore than their competitors whether they’re FCS or FBS.

Only difference is we are developing elite players every year and other teams might only have one every few years. Impact on our program is greater

Better question is how does he compare to other "random guys on the internet"? You know, the ones with all the inside scoops.

Like the Portly one? Oh No! He doesn't actually know anything, he just manipulates data to make it seem like UND's Athletic Program isn't as highly publically subsidized in comparison to FCS leading programs.

Since you want to be picky about it, UND was #6 FCS in smallest percentage of revenue being from allocated funds, so I guess they do rank pretty comparable in the grand scheme of things to FCS leading programs.*
Port's last article about subsidies was actually complimentary to NDSU keeping their allocated funds down and specifically pointed out how that compared to UND. But I know that doesn't fit your narrative, so carry on.
*Of the 76 FCS schools in the recently released report

Rob at least attempts to provide data to support his writing. And in many cases he presents good arguments. McFeely just writes believing as if it fact with no back up plan. A recent example when he went off about the U4K program about bringing Urkainians to the oil patch. We went on about how its a right wing attempt to move white people to western ND, whereas the program was a Ukraine specific program established by the Biden administration. What interesting about this after McFeely bash piece, Rob wrote an article on the program, with program specifics completely showing the errors of McFeely's blog. Happens everyday.
What are 10k followers worth on the internet? $100 a month? $200? That is what Mcfeely generates.

Why doesn't he do Minot State and the smaller colleges now?

I think that there's a version of the portal that might not be obvious but within which the Bison may already currently participate, and may actually further exploit with an FBS upgrade. A development program like NDSU might attract high FCS, low/middle FBS, and some high FBS talent for 3 of their 4 years of eligibility. We get kids that we wouldn't normally attract because they want that development. They may not want to graduate as Bison, but they damn sure want to contribute heavily to the cause for their redshirt and three years. I know that that means that a different team gets their theoretical best year but that doesn't negate the fact that we're getting guys that in some cases shouldn't even be sniffing NDSU.
Would you rather have skipped the three years Jabrill played in a Bison uniform? Or perhaps you could have 6-8 more of those guys on the team at any one time...

Because no one cares and the clicks it would generate aren't worth the time to research and write it? Unfortunately no one cares enough to shut them down or repurpose them either.

Exactly how I see it. If we don’t figure out the portal now, it only gets worse as an FBS team, because there are more “peers” and “superiors” (P5) poaching FBS teams left and right. Either have to keep the pipeline full of fresh talent to step up, or have to backfill from the portal. Maybe both.

The transfer portal giveth and taketh away. It all pretty much balances out in the long run.

and with NDSU FBS, they can easily poach Wisconsin/Iowa/Nebraska/Minnesota Transfer kids that are already FBS and wanting to play more at a FBS... as well as pick of the litter of minor leagues ...aka sdsu, usd, uni etc.

Rob's narrative was that athletics continue to drive up higher ed costs..... for that he uses data from an article that shows NDSU is the literally lowest public funded athletic program in the FCS. Who's the one trying to push a narrative? How pathetic was his reach??? He lists the indoor practice facility as an issue... then quickly throws out it was privately funded though.... then whines about it distracting from efforts to fund raise for academics. Twisted logic only a UND fan could fully appreciate.
Slap those two graphs for public funding on a common graph and let's really illustrate the difference in public funding support between the two North Dakota universities. Also lets adjust NDSU's public funding for inflation and lets see how flat that trend line looks then.
An unbiased take at that data would be that NDSU has kept it's state funding almost constant while managing to explode it's athletics funding through purely private funding and other revenues. UND..... not so much.
However, fatty hates college athletics.... and obviously the Indoor Football Practice Facility. He's obsessed with whining about it every chance he can insert it into a topic even when there is no reason to.

Under that posit, anything bigger than zero makes his case for him.
It's his standard approach: Throw out a macro problem and then poke at any example he can find of it.
NDSU being lowest, UND being sixth lowest, doesn't matter. Any funds will be his retort.

You’re doing the same thing. UND is 6th but so what you’re still double what NDSU receives.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
OK NDSU HAS TO GO FBS ASAP.
is this real? 5k to 5M for FBS entry possibly soon?
Big Ten information. College football fan
@Genetics56
The NCAA is talking about raising the entry cost to FBS from $5K to $5M. We will see if the legislation gets drafted if it gets approved or not next week.
That is one heck of an increase.

Even if it was true, $5m is a fraction of what it really costs to move to FBS anyhow.
This might stop Tarleton or SFA (possibly), it won't stop NDSU or Montana from moving. It's a nothing burger.

No idea who Ron Counts is or if he’s bona fide enough for the complainers who frequent this board, but …
If I found one that said "no way NDSU sucks" I’d post that link too but they don’t seem to exist
Have to go to fan forums to find that kind of dumb …
