The Fightin' Armadillos?? Not sure if the MWC wants that level of talent in their conference but Scott Bakula's getting pretty old, maybe they could beat him now.

Kathy Ireland was the best part of that team..By a very large margin..

My belief is if Texas St moves it will be to the AAC.
In the AAC they would have other Texas schools to associate with like UNT, UTSA, Rice, etc. There’s not enough upside to them moving to MWC, and their fans don’t seem to think that would happen.

Yeah, that’s my hope. May be hard to explain to the MW presidents why you added NDSU if Texas St was on the table…
But if I’m Texas State I’m waiting for bigger things and certainly not going to lock in a major clawback clause before I have to.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
According to Gloria Nevarez, the MW already knows what they will do if 1 school leaves, 2, 3 or more etc., leave.
The rumblings I have heard most frequently are my heartburn and excess stomach acid. However, I am willing to make a guess on what I think possible. In descending order of maybe...
1. If 1 or 2 leave..No addition
2. One west coast olympic sports addition to balance football and basketball membership. SDSU leaving creates a shortage in the non revenue sports. i.e. Swimming and diving, tennis and baseball and softball etc. Think St Mary's, Pacific, Davis, UC Santa Barbara, Irvine etc..
3. Add UTEP only. Long time former WACster with CSU,AFA,WY, NM, Fresno and HI. They are also in the neighborhood.
4. Add anyone else for all sports. This seems unlikely to me..But then, who am I ?
5 Add anyone for football only. See 4

Summit FB as a preemptive strike? Too funny
Hey MWC, would you consider DU under #2, or not west coast enough? DU is consistently pretty good on the oly front

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Interesting article. Would still have to think SDSU gets this done.
One theory I saw floated was this letter was a way to put pressure on PAC to get the deal done. Have seen it floated they may have an invite to the B12 also. The article casually mentions B12 expansion.

Can't imagine they'd do this without high confidence in a landing spot

Herder is 100% FCS as he thinks he is a FCS source. plus he will bootlick matt larson at any chance.
NDSU should do a FULL BLITZ of press releases and social media tweets stating "NDSU wants to be a part of the College Football Playoff system in the FBS whereas in 2025 the TOP G5 RATED CONFERENCE will get an Auto Bid into said CFP and we think NDSU helps a G5 conference reach that milestone yearly!"

San Diego State had requested a "one-month extension given unforeseen delays involving other collegiate athletic conferences beyond our control," plus a reduced exit fee or the ability to pay the exit fee in installments.
The Mountain West letter Friday was in response to SDSU's assertion that it had not given formal notice of withdrawal. The conference also said it did not accept the school's claim that it had not given formal notice of resignation.
The whole back and forth is a little humorous, and seems like both sides are trying to set the terms of divorce.
SDSU -> We resign, give us a break on exit fees, please.
MWC -> You resigned, we're taking the money!
SDSU -> Wait, we didn't officially resign, yet.
MWC -> Yes you did!
The interesting question now is what happens if SDSU tries to stay. MWC could say they already resigned, and kick them out.

SDSU, as per conference bylaws, sent the letter to all the other MW schools. That is pretty ironclad. They needed to notify before June 30, which they did. They still have to play in the MW for the 23/4 calendar to provide the one year notice mandate.. They will not be kicked out. They will be free to join any conference next June. The MW will still get the 17 million. SDSU can also seek to be reinstated if they wish. They did that before when they bailed on the Big East. I believe the MW would take them back. Having said that I do expect them to be in the Pac next June.

Now what happens if SDSU gets their offer and then officially "officially" resigns on July 4?
Do both sides reverse their argument? Does the first "unofficial" letter where they asked for an extension count, or the follow-up letter where they claimed they weren't officially resigning yet?
The whole thing seems a little bit fuzzy and possibly headed to court if an additional $17m is on the line.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
SDSU wanted to send resignation without resigning so that way when they actually resign after July 1st they can threaten to take it to court and have the MW schools say “ahh it ain’t worth it” and let them walk for $17M
Only reason why you’d follow the “commissioners office and 11 other schools” aspect
Now if they don’t leave they can try to say they didn’t send official notice and threaten litigation that way
Either way schools aren’t going to go to court, especially with all the fluidity going on in conference dynamics
If I was a betting man, I’d say that’s the calculus they were goofing around with

The first letters are the official notice. When the first sentence says..We intend to resign the MW, the rest of the stuff is pretty well moot..
SDSU can seek litigation if they wish. But, if they lose the case they will have to pay 34 million..I think they want to leave, notified all the conference members before June 30th and will leave next June 30th. Either way theMW gets an exit fee of some amount. There could be some negotiation but there is really no reason for the MW to do that. What the SDSU is trying to do is to get the 6 million dollar distribution issued after June 30th for the next fiscal year, now. Again, the MW is not obligated to do so if SDSU leaves before July 1st. They have said they "intend" to do so already. Messy, for sure but not uncommon in the realignment world of today

Right, it feels like they want to have their cake and eat it too.
"We sent notice of resignation, but didn't actually resign, yet" ... and MWC seems to be calling their bluff on that.
It seems to me like *IF* SDSU doesn't actually leave, they'd have to try to re-negotiate their way back in now, and still might forfeit $17m.
The articles say "The intention of the June 13 letter wasn't that San Diego State is exiting." but on the flip side MWC very much seems to be treating it as an official exit now.

While SDSU will stick around in the MW for 23/4, they will most certainly officially join another conference Next July 1st. I guess, SDSU could rescind their resignation letter before midnight June 30th and try again next year, but that does not seem at all likely. They wouldn't have started negotiating for an extension, a decrease in the exit fee and an installment plan unless they knew they were leaving. The window is right now for either a Pac or Big 12 invitation. There may not be the same chance a year from now.

Interesting note about realignment. The Iowa State AD was on the radio today and talked about how they were seriously considering changing the name of the Big 12 until the four new teams strongly indicated that they want to keep the name "Big 12."

Yep, on this I will agree. Personally I feel the leadership has taken a different approach publicly to the FBS discussion over the past year. They have communicated their desire to explore an FBS offer and they have stated they will be ready to respond to one when it comes. That is different than previously when they consistently stated they felt that FCS was the right spot for NDSU and they would continue to evaluate their spot in College Athletics. Those might not sound that different but to me they signal movement internally within the athletic department. From my perspective, they are no longer leading with the message that FCS is great and we feel it is right for us. That message has definitely been downplayed recently. It's not that they are bashing the FCS, which they can't and shouldn't do but to me it does signal that they believe that the long term future for NDSU is not in FCS football (as it currently is constituted) and they would like to find a home that more aligns with their football program aspirations. As many have stated, an invite isn't fully within their control but the message has always been within their control and I think that they have struck a much better tone publicly recently. Now we'll see how all this plays out.

The tone of the NDSU athletic department has definitely changed since the Covid 2020 season. We all witnessed the spring debacle and it really showed where each FCS school prioritizes football. I think seeing 90% of the FCS basically announce that they do not care about football finally got the NDSU admin's attention. NDSU football does not belong in the same division as schools that would rather cancel football than spend any amount of money to be competitive. I do believe that ML & the administration realize this and are trying to put NDSU in the best position to be ready to move on from the FCS when the right situation presents itself. The amount of facility upgrades at NDSU in the past decade show some of this effort; I barely recognize campus from when I was at NDSU in the early 2010's.

I thought the general consensus around here was a preference for joining the AAC..That what your coach said publicly. Maybe you should point your efforts there.

I’d say at this point the preference around here is anything that’s not CUSA is an auto-yes. Barring the conference offering some crap reduced revenue sharing that would prohibit us being able to be competitive in the conference.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
That is a fair point..I am not sure why a conference would want to put a new member in a tight squeeze like that.
