I agree..That is exactly why I do not think the MW will make any additions. I am unconvinced that even NDSU would really want to be in a western G5 conference. Too much cost and travel for limited reward.

MWC, SBC, AAC are all relatively good G5 conferences. Pecking order seems to AAC, MWC, SBC - though I don't think there will be a ton of movement between them. Especially between the AAC/MWC which both have high exit fees involved. It makes sense to pay those fees if moving to a P5 conference, but not otherwise.

Cost/benefit is better than other G5 conferences like MAC I believe. Moving straight to a P5 isn't realistic. That makes MWC a good target if we can make the financials work. At least the MWC media deal is significant at $4m/year. The AAC only offers new schools $2m/year, and it goes down from there. A streaming deal might be even better if it gives the schools more ability to control kickoff times. I'm kind of hoping Apple or Amazon will enter in a big way with the PAC, and create a little more competition. That would benefit others like MWC also.

You don’t know that the MWC would only offer new members $2 mil/yr like the AAC does. They might value FCS teams less than say a TX school. Also why the heck are you talking about P5????? That’s a pipe dream that will never happen unless our campus doubles in size which is no where near the forecast. Hard to take our posters seriously when you try to talk P5!

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Just checking to see if 3 or 4 people could bitch back and forth this week again on who should get more money for school... NDSU or UND. That was awesome last week! :sigpalm:

I literally said it is NOT an option, in the context of why MWC makes the most sense.
I'm not even saying MWC is a slam dunk, just that it's the most reasonable path for us to explore. And one that potentially has an opening on the near horizon.

Probably no expansion until at least summer of 2026.
Though they could I don't think the providers will adjust the contract lower..The MW still has time slots to sell even without SDSU.
For the same reason, I think the next contract will be about the same.
I do not think the MW would add any school at a reduced payout unless it is a football only deal which could be the case for NDSU

I could see 2026 working out better for us. Gives a little time for the dust to settle on the recent department restructuring. Professors probably wouldn't be thrilled if we announced a big push this year with more spending.

Why should they care? NDSU athletics raises most of its own money. The professors don't have anything to do with it ...
So you guys are bullish on the PAC sitting tight. How is their situation going to change by waiting? Seems like it could get even worse, tbh

If you look at other G5/MWC schools, just about all of them spend a lot more on subsidies than we do.
That means we will likely either have to raise student fees, or get more institutional support for this. That may not sit well with folks who just took cuts. Or, maybe we could try to operate on a shoe-string G5 budget, but that doesn't typically produce a lot of winning.

No doubt, but if there's a window there's a window, and they don't come around very often ...

Also true, but this type of a move typically has to be approved by the president and board. They are going to care a lot about the finances.
Almost all MWC schools are spending $50m-$65m annually on athletics. That's a significant difference from where we are today. And it isn't that they "earn" that much more in FBS, its being more heavily subsidized.
Not to mix topics, but this is also why I think the push to pay student athletes is ridiculous. Outside the top half of P5, almost all schools are subsidizing (losing money) on sports programs overall. It isn't the high profit affair some pretend it is for the schools.

I haven't seen the numbers lately, but I believe UND has a significantly higher athletic fee than NDSU. I would think it would be an easy sell to said faculty to say we are just rasing student fees to to match those of the "flagship."

Imagine this would need to be part of the financial projections/package to sell the move to the board. I'd be a bit surprised if they easily approved more state/taxpayer funds.
I know our private giving is strong compared to peers, but looking at the bigger picture we'd need to 4x teammakers to have a competitive budget. That would be much more than other MWC schools raise privately. Think some of that increase will need to come from fees.

All sports for sure, but FB-only is obviously much less prohibitive in terms of cost
This is why I've said all along that both ND schools going full FBS is simply unrealistic

This is a very interesting (if incomplete) list
IF NDSU got the same state support as UND, NDSU budget would be $36M, which is getting pretty close to the $40M mark that’s sort of a soft minimum for FBS imo

Um, one?
Of course everyone else will engage with that person so it’ll go on for weeks, but that’s a different problem…

I think it's a MWC beat writer. You and I would be "random guys on the internet"
And then there's the title

I don't think any of you posters here are too stupid to figure it out..
I am not stirring the pot..This random guy from SBNation did offer up some interesting ideas..I, personally, think the expansion candidates he mentions work pretty well. I do think a 16 team conference with two 8 school devisions solves a number of expansion problems.

He's not wrong. We would compare nicely with our football practice and office facilities, we would have the 2nd smallest football stadium in all of FBS. In addition, there are some tremendous basketball facilities in the MWC. We would definitely rank last in the MWC with the SHAC.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Here is a wild and crazy idea from my fevered mind and the voices, the voice, the voices..
Pacific West Conference
UNLV
NV
USU
FSU
SJSU
HAW football only
Boise
Sac St
Davis
UC Santa Barbara olympic sports
UC Irvine olympic sports
Mountain Central Conference
Wyoming
CSU
AFA
NM
UTEP
Texas ST
NDSU
SDSU
Montana
Montana State
Two tight regional conferences who could certainly work out some cross scheduling to get good ooc match ups..
Rip away!!

The Dome is a relic and we messed up the basketball arena reno. Everything else is great though, the Dome needs some attention asap.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
I honestly know nothing about your facilities or how they compare to MW schools. I would guess they are already good enough to be added to a FBS conference and the extra revenue can help plug some of the holes.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
San Diego State “exploring all options”, but no official invite from any other conference. Looks like they want to leave. What dominos will fall as a result of that if they leave?
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
San Diego St has made no secret of their desire to move to a power conference. I believe they do have an invitation to the Big 12 in hand but may be waiting for the Pac 12 to iron out their contract. I think that would be their preferred destination. Like most things money is at the root of it all. If they officially retire from the MW before June 30, they will be responsible for a 16.5 million exit fee. If they don't officially leave by June 30 they have to pay 34 million to skeedaddle. They have asked for a 1 month extension to retire at 16.5..I am not sure the MW will give them that extension.
There will be fallout but that pretty much all depends on what happens with the Pac 10.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
I don't understand SDSU's move.
The MWC may tell them "no extension, pound sand, and pay the exit".
That just gives more power to PAC and BXII to lower offers (because SDSU jammed itself up).
I don't understand the SDSU move at all.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
Ndsu fbs. Dominos falling!!

I am not sure they jammed themselves at all. They haven't officially asked to leave yet. They just asked for an extension for 1 month to decide. If nothing is cooking by June 29 they can just stick around and leave after next year. If something does gel then they can get to getting now. I believe they have two offers at least close..the Pac and the Big 12. Neither conference will low ball them as both would like to be in SoCal..

Suspect the PAC invite is basically done. They likely know the media deal details, and are locked in.
Just because something isn't announced yet doesn't preclude it being already all lined up.
Another article https://www.espn.com/college-sports/...est-plans-exit
The article does suggest there is some back and forth on this being an official withdrawal.
SDSU is just trying to line up all the pieces at this point.

If this works out, we can thank God our AD didn't listen to the whiners here who wanted us to join a crappy conference.
It's been obvious for a year now this could develop, just a matter of time. Now the dominoes could fall any day.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
if we go to the mwc bros i'm going to hawaii and drinking mai tais while watching the bison hang 50 on the rainbows i don't think they can stop qb power 60 times like SDSU can.
