The struggle seems to be they could get a big online streaming deal with someone like Apple or Amazon, but they can't get the linear TV guys (ESPN/Fox/NBC) to put them on the air and payout what they want. At some point they'll have to decide if they value television airtime or money more.
Ask the ACC how well the streaming is working for them. Even if they got $30M from AppleTV (they are neither worth that much, nor would Apple have to pay nearly that much), there is a lot of harm to the long term brand by not being on the main networks. PAC12 already suffers enough that folks are sleeping when their marquee games are being played.

I think the MW will go with streaming exclusively for their next contract.

Vaya con Dios ... because He might be the only one along.
Hardcores will stream; most folks want easy ... "hey, what's on" ...

Re: A new and better FBS thread
There will still be 3rd tier tv rights but I am guessing the powers that be are pretty much over the the major tv providers telling the MW they have to have 8 PM football games in the cold or 9 o'clock starts for basketball..
MW deals have all been predicated upon late night slots..That just kills attendance..

Will be interesting to see what they announce. Competing rumors thus far.
Would have to think this all gets done soon, certainly before the season starts.
Canzano still reporting things look good for PAC

Late last week I contacted a member of the Pac-12 CEO Group and asked: “Still feeling confidence about beating $31.6 million per year?”
The source replied: “We are.”

Sure, but how long is it going to be before cable and streaming are indistinguishable from each other?

That's a bold (maybe risky) move if so. PAC or MW would be the first.
Money talks though, if they can increase the payout, maybe worth the gamble.

Lol what else is his source going to say? “We’re sunk, everyone to a life raft!”
If they could beat it, it would be public and they’d be recruiting B12 schools.

I don’t disagree at all. If NDSU can make $2M+ per year on a local + streaming contract, the MW will do just fine. Having free reign over your home start times is very nice!

Free reign aside from conference requirements, but your point stands.

Looks like current MWC deal runs thru 2025-26.
Does renegotiation get triggered if SDSU leaves? Or that's up to CBS/Fox?
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
Yes..The tv providers can change the payout if San Diego State, or anyone else leaves. That is the reason for the hefty exit fees..

I think folks here vastly underestimate the harm that the late games will do to attendance, TV/streaming viewership, and the brand overall.

Very much agree. No one is interested in 10pm Central kickoffs. I mean, I am and I think it would be fun but the average fan, no.

Viewership even suffers here in Pacific Time. It's very common for games to be still going by midnight and a lot of people have tuned out by then.
(Admittedly, I don't have the numbers to back that up. I just know from my own behavior as well as anecdotally from friends and acquaintances.)

I like the MWC, a lot. But 10pm would be rough, if that were mandated.
Maybe MWC can change this if a streaming provider steps up with money.
Seems like it would likely not change before 2026-27, unless there's a way to end the current deal.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
The start times are not mandated by the MW..It is what the tv providers want in exchange for televising the games. Fox and CBS do not want to televise MW games during the day because those are the time slots for the big boy conferences.
With streaming, the MW and any other conference can play at 1PM on a Saturday.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
Most Saturdays I'm lucky if I can watch the 10:00 PM news without falling asleep.

Speaking as a guy who lived through UND in the BSC and 10 pm Central starts, that is truth.

Sports Illustrated reporting Arizona and Colorado are heading to the B12, just not official yet.
Hold on to your butts?

If, hypothetically, we had a choice between MWC games at 10pm, or MAC at more normal times, which do you choose?

As the conferences currently sit? Mountain west x 1,000,000
Even if the mountain west loses up to four teams I like that better than the MAC. And that’s before even taking the MACtion Tuesday games into account
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
Have to Agree. MWC/AAC is preferred. CUSA/Sun Belt I'd go holding my nose. MAC is a distant 5th

From an opponent standpoint, totally agree.
If being honest, probably I watch more games at home on Fox though at 10pm.
Suspect I wouldn't be the only one.

Stony brook is on eastern time. That's like way past his bedtime eh.

His mama don't let him do anything past 2:30 pm central time or little Matty gets cranky eh.

Not sure what you mean. You mean vs going to the actual home games?
The Mountain West wouldn't force NDSU into having 10pm home games. Road games are a different story though.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
AAC is my dream (some of it selfishly due to where I reside) but the MWC would be awesome.

Hope you are right.
I was reading earlier comments from the MWC poster as Fox/CBS were setting the kickoff times at 10pm based on their media airtime slots. PAC games are often used to fill the late night slots, and it seems maybe the same with the MWC media deal.
Kickoff times are often set by the media in FBS conferences. It's also why some of them have midweek games. The media companies paying the bills get a whole lot of scheduling power, though some of the parameters are set up front when the deal is made. This is also why in some respects a streaming deal could be advantageous, IF the payout was equal or better.

You're correct. But if you're telling me I have to pick between MACtion tuesday night against Western Michigan or a Mountain West conference game that CBS wants at 10pm...
P.S. I don't think a MAC regular season game has been on network TV on a saturday as long as I've been alive so there's that too

The MAC schedule isn't that horrible when you look and compare it to other G5 conferences.
The typical MAC school is seeing on average two midweek games in November, maybe one home and one away.

I like MWC a ton for the competition and teams in the league. Don't think I would make quite as many games in person though.
Just looked, it seems like majority of MWC games kickoff between 6:00-9:30pm central.

Would still enjoy the heck out of watching it on television.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
If the PAC10 gets robbed by the rest of the P5 then the MWC is next. They will need to fill some big holes and will be our best shot at FBS
