Correct, though in practice it is about 99.9% probability that will mean the P5 plus one G5 champion making the field.
About 80% of the time it would have been AAC teams that get that bid, including the past 6 years.
This is why they like to call themselves "P6"
SBC might have squeezed Coastal in 2020 covid year, but its generally a long shot for G5 schools not in the AAC.
Like a once a decade event, if that.
There are good reasons to join a FBS conference, but people expecting immediate CFP bids will be disappointed.

I personally wasn’t expecting IMMEDIATE CFP appearances… once a decade seems like a decent goal.

WE ARE IN THE WRONG LEAGUE
G5 draft picks were WAY down this year, because most of the NFL caliber guys have transferred to P5 schools to improve their draft status. Quite a few P5 draft picks were G5 players that transferred.
This is a trend I think will accelerate. The P5 schools are mining G5 like a farm system.
We've actually been lucky some of our players have remained committed, and a little bit "under the radar"
If we move to FBS, unfortunately would expect more players to transfer out.
G5 schools find it incredibly hard to hold onto successful players and coaches.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
another NDSU player goes up to FBS.
we are getting GUTTED by not moving up...

Re: A new and better FBS thread
That won't stop if you get to FBS. Now, you are the Cadillac of FCS. You get really good recruits because of that. If you go FBS you will just be another school. Players will have lots of choices to consider for a transfer. Imagine your best players entering the portal. It might be awful tough to keep them if the choices come down to NIL opportunities, weather, exposure, tougher competition etc..

Exactly. Just another ridiculous reason to scream about jumping to the G5. Quick glance for example:
James Madison - 13.
Coastal - 12.
Bohl - 15+
FCS is old and stale is just a fine enough reason no need for the insane sales pitches.

We don't have to imagine it, it's been happening for 3-4 years!

I would be down with that. Kind of like how once in a decade other sports might make it out of the first round of an NCAA tournament.

Correct. Again, seems reasonable… but hey, *removes green and gold glasses* —AHEM— that’s just me.

Agree, see no problem with it. Just think one or two fans have the wrong perspective and are unrealistic about what a move would mean.
I’d love to play Colorado St, Utah St, Boise, Wyoming, etc. MWC would be fun.
Would not enjoy seeing SHSU, Kennesaw and JSU all over again with a new label.
Regular season matters more than bowl games and post season for most FBS teams.
That's something our fans would have to adjust to, since we expect to play for the Natty each year.

This is a true statement - especially with those teams with post season aspirations.
In the FCS the regular matters (to the point where we get the 1 or 2 seed). Outside of that we could lose several games and still make the playoffs with a chip and a chair to get a natty.
In FBS, every regular season game is life and death. Lose a game and you're out - especially if you're a G5 since only 1 will make it to the playoffs (most years).

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Count me in with others totally okay with a change in post season expectations when we move up.

I think most people would acclimate pretty quickly. I don't think issues would arise with fan interest unless the team was regularly under .500

well obviously that would have to happen.
but you COUNTER that but stating everywhere there is a microphone "NDSU has a OPPORTUNITY to reach the CFP!"
shout it out.

Doesn't every FBS school also have an opportunity to reach the CFP?

NDSU's academics and research fit well into the AAC, too
It would be a good fit, and probably a great add!"

Seems like diagnosing that kind of extraordinary popular delusion in advance is a pretty big ask.

What’s wrong with Bud light? I mean, it is what it is, kinda like this thread, in which drift is a blessing …
But you should really try this stuff - https://untappd.com/b/falling-knife-...royale/5185551
Best beer I’ve had in a long while
... and back on topic, I’d say Tony is right on both fronts

Didn't realize how much money AAC and MWC schools are losing/subsidizing.
Looks like 15-37M for each MWC school, and 20-36M for each AAC school.
Don't think we are anything close to that level of deficit spending on sports.
If the Knight data is correct, last year we spent $7.6M in subsidies (school and student fee support).
So it looks like needed subsidies would jump about $10M in FBS.
All the "wealth" in FBS has been concentrated to the top, even more than I thought.

FB-only, at last until ND consolidates its D1 athletics under single non-redundant brands ...
Yeah, I know, "FB-only isn’t possible because all these conferences want all sports", as they say on here ...
FB-only is the future. Just ask Vannini. It makes way too much sense not to eventually happen

The above link gives you an idea of what's what for most MW schools..It is not as dire as one might suspect..

The link you posted says Nevada athletics gets 48% of its funding from the school, the state, or student fees…

I don't think that is unusual. Those totals were from 2 years ago when there was still Covid money to subsidize not having any fans in the stands.
Most years the AD comes in pretty close to 50/50. There has been a revenue bump the last couple years.

Having your AD getting subsidized by taxpayers to the tune of $20M each year sounds pretty dire lol

The University receives funds for the school as a whole. That is not not unusual for a State School..The athletic department receives a small percentage of that. Most of that sum goes to waivers for scholarships. The free education cost of that is absorbed by the university..The AD doesn't get a wad of cash for that.
If your contention is that the AD is bankrupting the school and the state, I can't stop you. They have apparently been bankrupting everybody for 150 years..
The schools of the MW are doing fine..It just comes down to budgets and revenue..

I didn't say anything other than the athletic department at the University of Nevada gets subsidized by $20M per year. This is triple than what NDSU receives for state/state-institution support. I didn't say anyone is bankrupting anyone. I didn't even say that it's not money well spent. But any organization that gets half of its money subsidized by a public entity is going to have questions about its sustainability. Especially when that subsidization rate is increasing.
I've said it a dozen times here: if NDSU (or SDSU, UND, Montana, Montana State, etc.) was subsidized like the rest of the MW schools, they would have MW budgets.

After a while some of this starts to sound like how proud we are in North Dakota that the public doesn’t pay very much to support public institutions of higher education.

Most of ND is proud that we don’t pay for anything. Stash it all away so we can take it with us when we all die!!!!!

Feel free to hear what you want to hear I guess. I didn’t say what you’re insinuating, I could argue actually the opposite. Nothing would make me happier than ND investing more in higher education. We could spend all weekend arguing whether state money going towards athletics counts as going towards education. I’ll choose to save my breath on that.
What I’m saying is the difference in athletic budgets at NDSU and Nevada is state support. Winds blow and that state/institution support ends up not being as safe as previously thought.
