NDSU going FBS saves NDSU athletics. period. otherwise the slow bleed out is gonna be depressing
North Dakota Tourism pay you to say this? How about the Chamber of Commerce?

NDSU is not over 50% Minnesotans but even if it were, that has zero relevance in the FBS debate.

NDSU provides that enrollment data. You heard incorrectly.

Smells like east coast elitism to me.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
ND is actually growing, lakes, albeit not at rate that justifies the current structure of the NDUS, unfortunately. You don’t help your cause with the stuff you post on here
ML (the guy you hate for some unrelated reason) was quoted in the Athletic as saying something to the effect of "you don’t build facilities like this to play Indiana State". Which conference are the Sycamores in again? NDSU is FB school that will strive to be with other FB schools, not BB and hockey schools. What does that leave in the MVFC? We’ll see, but my guess is not much. But I’ll support them either way
Everyone who posts in this thread has an agenda on this question, but none of us will make the actual decision

Was I secretly hoping it would last longer than a month? Yes.
Is that realistic? We’ll see…

Interesting article on levels of state funding for SD D1 schools
XDSUs are clearly better positioned than UXDs, and hockey is its own thing
If I read this correctly, P5s makes so much money that they don’t really need any state funds
So … since G5 and FCS are now feeder schools for the P5 talent, how about we tax P5 profits a bit to ease the burden at the lower levels
What do you say NCAA? To progressive, eh? Would take some cajones eh ... never mind

Profits? So are these athletic departments businesses or not?

I feel like that would be mean-spirited. CCRB has been adamant that they are against mean-spiritedness.

You want P5 schools to get their TV revenue, donations, ticket sales, etc. "taxed" for the benefit of non-P5 schools?

Aren't the majority of P5 schools public, meaning non-taxable entities?

I think he's suggesting through the NCAA, almost like a luxury tax or revenue sharing in the professional leagues
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
In the spirit of this thread i’m using “tax” in a loose tongue-in-cheek manner …
But you guys know what i’m saying

There are no profits. 100% of the revenue from the big boy schools gets put into the program for things like fancy players lounges, nutrition programs. etc.

Doesn't that already happen with the NCAA subsidizing everyone else? Isn't the P5 wanting all the money they earn the reason people are talking about splitting from the NCAA?
-

NCAA money from the NCAA tournament is already shared across all conferences and then to schools in those conferences. It's also shared with other sports championships. Within schools their football programs and sometimes basketball programs help fund other sports at the school. So the major P5/P6 programs are already getting "taxed" multiple ways.

What do you call the funds that support non-revenue sports? (what or where do those funds come from - for the P5s)
-

They are obligated to, more or less, spend whatever comes in on furthering the objectives of the organization (or alternatively paying stupid salaries to managers and executives). So, everyone should understand that we need to take this notion that only 18 of these 229 athletic departments are "profitable" with a huge grain of salt.

Those funds are from income primarily from football and basketball. As long as your athletic department expenses >= income, there is no profit. Does the University of Oregon athletic department file a tax return showing a profit or loss?

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Good Discussion! Good points Audit and Indy.
At some point in the future...
The P5 basketball and football players will go to court to try to get paid directly from the schools - won't they?

They already are. Johnson v NCAA is in circuit court right now asking for student athletes to be considered employees of the school and paid directly in cash. I'm pretty sure they'll win. Next step is share of earnings, I'm somewhat surprised that hasn't been filed yet.

This could be a good thing and not necessarily the dividing rod that some think, especially if coupled with serious NIL reform. The collectives would just become formal donors again and all the $$ would flow through the schools where it would be subject to equitable sharing, etc
Just speculation, but it’s possible with DB on the NCAA committee, NDSU knows NIL is soon to be subject to a massive change in scope, which is why there is no movement here. Just a guess and I have no idea, but some type of reform is needed
