Cook wants FBS per BisonReport, DB the most overrated president in the history of NDSU wanted to stay FCS. Drove the school right into multiple icebergs.

Got it, thanks!! Hadn't heard that about Cook, but completely agree with your assessment of DB--academics, too, not just athletics....

I'm not ignoring that fact. I'm just softening the message for the apologists here who are unwilling to make any acknowledgement of leaderships role in our current situation. DB's stance that FCS was where NDSU best fit is a major factor in them misreading the tea leaves of the college football landscape. If the president has this opinion, it would be very unwise for anyone else at the University to spend meaningful time on exploring an FBS move. I believe that eventually even DB had to acknowledge that more time needed to be spent on the possibility but by then they were behind the curve and didn't really have a coherent and organized plan. They were and are in my opinion too reactionary.

I'd agree with that, and throw in the fact that people who had major disagreements with DB tended to lose their jobs....

Don't know much about that specifically but in any organization the head guy sets the tone and people understand that following their lead is the best way to ensure their employment.

There's that strawman again. I'm sure you think I'm one of them, but that's absolutely not true. I've never said DB was a good president. He may have been the best we could get at the time though. The Chapman/Taylor combo was a once in a lifetime event that most schools never get at all. You can't use them as your baseline.
Another thing you appear to be completely unable to comprehend is that without an invite FBS is a bad move. Without an invite staying FCS is most definitely the right thing to do. You take DB's comments out of context and focus on what you want to hear so you have a person to blame instead of the larger situation.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
I would hate to be the new president right now. Seems like a good enough guy but he has some tremendous headwinds between enrollment, budget cuts and the football/conference/level debacle.

It's a horrible mess. On the other hand, if he handles this well he probably punches his ticket for at least a Big 12 level school...this won't be his last stop...

That's a great point. Solving problems = earning money. Bigger problems = more money.

The tone?
Like sleeping with a member of the alumni board of directors?

President Cook needs to set a new tone for the University moving forward and needs to lead NDSU to it's potential. DB didn't do that.

It's a microcosm and case study of DB's style of "leadership": Rules for thee, but not DB.
The provost fiasco was another, but as long as football was winning no one noticed, or cared.
DB left a mess for Cook that'll take some time to unwind.

I'll go 2009 to date.
Kelley, Kennedy, Armacost. (Schafer was interim.)
NDSU?
Chapman, Bresciani, Cook. (Hanson was interim.)
But NDSU does lead 1-0 on "email deletion investigations of the president by the NDAG" in that timeframe. (And yes "bison audit", it seems the AG's office used that as a "learning experience" in not a good way.)

That's a bit misleading considering that Chapman resigned in 2009 and Cook has been in the role for less than a year. Essentially Bresciani has been the President at NDSU for the entirety of the timeframe you defined. Kelley from 09 to 16, Kennedy 16-19 and Armacost 19-present.

It's not a strawman. It's based on the reality that there is a large segment of this fanbase that are fearful of failing just like DB was. And in turn they fail by not even trying. If you want to put yourself in that category, so be it. I'm just calling a spade a spade. There's no strawman about any of that. There is a path to the FBS now. NDSU just doesn't particularly like it. However, that path will become more and more attractive with every season of growing fan apathy.
If Chapman/Taylor are a "unicorn" than we might as well shut down the entire University. That is some completely revisionary bullshit. Chapman and Taylor both did a lot of great things for the University but they were by no means perfect. There are always varying levels of performance from people but If I based my decisions on resigning myself to the average than I would be just that, average. Psychology is a powerful thing and once something has shown to be possible it damn well can be repeated and eventually exceeded. I will never, ever see it from your perspective that we have to settle for less because it is difficult to exceed previous performances. That is some downright weak mentality.

Next year. Believe the reasoning was ND's coach and TSU's coach are friends, easy to sell to the AD to schedule a HBCU.

Nope, not even close. But neither is the Little Engine that Could bullshit.
Name another school that in anyway has been in NDSU's predicament. I'm guessing you won't need more than 1 finger to add that up. "GSU, JMU, App State etc blah blah"...no, not even close to the same situation and we all know why. That isolation is a bitch.
Sucks dick, yup for sure. There's a reason it hasn't been done by BOTH SIDES, because it ain't gonna be easy for anyone involved, even with the little engine that could bullshit group think attitude "OMG we can do it, if we try". Welcome to the real world of college athletics where your throat will be slit as soon as you turn your back.

The defeatist bullshit got us here so I guess I don’t have any patience for it. Geography is a bitch but there’s a path now. We just don’t like it. The bad part of that is they played their hand with the IPF and used up a whole shitload of donor money that won’t move us any closer to FBS, doesn’t seem to be helping much on the player retainment front, isn’t combating fan apathy and does almost nothing to improve basketball. The “little engine that could” mentality as you call it is what’s built NDSU. You can continue to give up and I’ll continue to advocate for more.

Ok. What’s the path and where’s the invite from? Sorry. The CUSA doesn’t do anything for most of the fanbase. The move has to move the needle.

It does move the needle, just not for you. It’s not about you or me individually. It’s about continuing to build the fanbase and engagement. CUSA might not be the perfect situation but it is better than the FCS. If there’s no FBS then basketball is the only other option. I think that’s a tougher sell than CUSA.

No. CUSA does nothing for the average fan and itll do nothing to grow the fanbase It’s like the Nashville game. Oh sweet… Nashville sounds great. Christ. Tennessee state? Yup I’m out.
And it obviously does nothing for NDSU as entz alluded to the the Athletic article as everyone jumped all over.
It is the literal only option however.

You are assuming we have an open invite to the CUSA, especially a football only invite…….

You’re making that assumption based on your feelings and preference. CUSA is no worse than the current MVFC and the ooc game potential and the opportunity to be ranked in the top 25 will create a bump in excitement. How long it will last and how quickly we can ascend to something greater is where the risk lies.

CUSA would absolutely extend an invite if they believed we would accept it.

I agree with this. I think of it as lateral move in competition but also a way to get into the FBS ranks and as a possible stepping stone for our program to another/better conference in the future. Also OOC games would help out a lot more. Fan base engagement would have a slight tick up for a year or two. After that, it depends on where (if at all) we could possibly rank nationally and performance against other G5 and the P5 with 22 more scholarships. Either way what we are doing now isn’t going to get better with the fan base and we have already seen what that’s been like as of late.

Yep. It’s not without risk but neither is staying where we’re at. But there’s no denying that the ceiling is higher than the FCS and the floor is no lower.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Aaaaaaand we're back to the same old arguments. FBS or Bust crowd didn't get their way so they need someone to blame instead of understanding why we don't have an invite. Obviously anyone that disagrees with them is wrong because they're wrong. Reasons don't matter, attack the messenger simply for pointing them out. There's clearly a shadowy cabal holding us back. Nevermind that literally everyone in the decision making process would personally benefit from increased salary and exposure if we went FBS.

Or the people in the decision making process have some ol boys club donors in their ear who they are letting steer them in the complete opposite direction of what’s logical. If you want to be scared of your own shadow, that’s cool. I’m just not going to join you.

For the record, you actually believe there's a shadowy cabal preventing an FBS move?

I believe there are a lot of misguided people just like yourself who have caused leadership to believe that all was good and that winning FCS championships forever was going to keep people engaged, even when the evidence was in direct opposition to that.
