As for the next point you made..Being in G5 is fun despite not being in the national title hunt. Though I am not a big football fan, it is still fun to go to games and see your old friends. You get to know some of the folks who come into town too. There tends to be pretty consistent parity in G5 and particularly the MW.
It is still college football..It is still entertaining.
The basketball will be better than the Summit.
All valid points that I agree with, however I will say this. A 12-16 team G5 playoff would be an absolute blast and the championship game would likely get close to filling up an NFL stadium most years. But only if G5 schools woke up from fantasy land to realize that they were never playing with the P5 schools to begin with. Unfortunately to your point, very unlikely.

The peak of the 2013 season was beating K-State. All 4 playoff games were over at halftime
This year, twice as many people went to Arizona than Frisco
Fans want to see great games. The playoffs thr last few years have declined because the games suck. Its gonna get even more lopsided with good teams exiting. Now we dont even play every MVFC team every year
Playing Tulane, who beat USC in the Cotton Bowl would be equally as exciting as Frisco or most playoff games if we host them at the dome on ABC for the AAC Conference Championship. So would traveling to New Orleans if they finish 1st and we finish 2nd and we have to travel there
Some Bowls would be less exciting than Frisco but others would. I guarantee K-State is pumped about their season and they didnt win the Natty
But when you can do home and homes with Appalachian, Georgia Southern and JMU, that's better than a 40 point playoff game vs Colgate toothpaste
Also an extra 22 scholarships mean more horses. Its easier to find the next Jabril or Watson when can offer more of them

Surely the Arizona game was a much larger draw than Frisco. At least a 50% bigger draw if the stadiums were the same size.

It's hideous...EWU, Maine and Central Arkansas. Southern Illinois might be our best home game, the marketing department is going to have to put in some work.

If and when you move up the ooc scheduling gets more interesting..

Much better. Home and homes with similar level schools. Probably 1 FCS school. Wyoming for example is one of the worst travel trips. 2023 home games Applachian State, Texas Tech and an FCS. Road game at Texas

Serious question- Does non conference scheduling get easier even if we are FBS? Do the schools that won’t play us now agree to play us when we have more scholarships and the pool of teams for them to choose from gets higher?
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
In my mind it’s easier for a P5 to swallow a loss from a G5 AAC member than any FCS school. IMHO
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
Nevada gets at least 1 and often 2 P5 games a year. Next season they open on the road against USC. They have a home game against Kansas. The other two are on the road against Texas State and home against FCS school Idaho State.
Most of the future schedules are booked 3 or 4 years in advance..I don't think you would have any trouble getting games.

I know MAC schools occasionally host P5 schools. I went to see Western Michigan host Pitt last Fall. It wasn't a huge deal for them as the gave wasn't sold out. They got a bigger crowd than normal. The Bison could have some trouble because teams don't want to lose to a G5. Some may not want to travel to Fargo because they don't have alumni in the area. But definitely much more likely than a an FCS school.

I think so. Every G5 school in the nation has to fill 3 home non conference games. The days of home and homes between G5 and P5 will never happen again due to money, so well never get Nebraska in the dome. I suspect the P5 wants to play other P5 non conference games and all the G5 will exclusively play road games. If G5 teams want that sole playoff spot, they aint gonna get it playing Drake or a mediocre FCS team. We would be viewed like any other Sunbelt, MAC or G5 league.

Not sure if that's true. WMU just finished a home and home with Pitt. Wyoming is hosting Texas Tech in 2023, BYU in 2024, Utah in 2025, California in 2029 and Arizona in 2033. Many of those are home and home. Some may be back ends of home and home. That's just spot checking 2 schools.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Of course scheduling gets easier.
Put Boise, San Diego State, top end of the MAC in FCS they wouldn’t get anyone to take them on either. The worlds easiest risk/reward analysis would tell an opposing AD to go find some other FCS cupcake to fill their schedule.
That completely changes when NDSU becomes recognized as the top 50 FBS program that it is.

I'm sure it would be amusing and fun to have a little NIT, but it would lose a lot of shine considering the best G5 team(s) will be in the playoff.
Imagine the legitimacy problem FCS would have if the #1 seed got invited to play in a NY6 bowl instead.

IMO that would mean a clean g5 p5 split and their little brother spot at the table wouldn’t be there. Will never happen of course.

Yeah not sure why the G5 would ever want to leave now. They got a real shot at snagging multiple playoff spots, not just the guaranteed one.

Wouldn't exactly be the G5's decision in that scenario...
Split isn't necessarily imminent, but the more autonomous everything gets the closer it's going to move to the P2/3 getting to do their own thing.

Playing uncompetitive teams like Indy State, UNI or WIU has gotten boring.
Wishing for less wins (or smaller winning margins) seems risky. Right now, NDSU has some rivalries (and some duds), based on proximity and competitiveness over the years. However, other than Navy, I can't imagine any AAC teams being all that exciting for Bison fans, including Tulane when they fall back into mediocrity.
P.S. Maybe you could get something started with Charlotte. Years ago, I was at a conference in Charlotte and went to a nearby sports bar that had a big NDSU flag prominently displayed. I think it was called Jocks and Jills. Perhaps the Bison fanbase in Charlotte is strong enough to have a presence at games in Charlotte that could lead to a new rivalry.

No one is “wishing for fewer wins” lol stop that crap. I mean do you want UNI to move down to D2? Just think you guys might win a playoff game if you did
The UNI fans I’ve talked to would love for us to go. They want their teacher school conference back

Jocks and Jills is where the local Bison watch parties are held.

Come on! Would I twist what you said in order to support my argument? ;)
For the record, you did say "some losses . . . so be it." Last time I checked, more losses means fewer wins.
You may not "want" more losses, but you (and others) seem willing to accept a few more losses in order to have better competition in FBS. That may be a costly wish.

Nobody is wishing for less wins. It's just the reality. Right now MVFC road games at 1/3 of the conference have a few thousand fans in the stands. The AAC bad crowds will be way bigger and a challenge. Big difference between 2K fans and 25K

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Does anyone else find it contradictory that one of the reasons many people love to watch sporting events is because no one knows what the outcome is going to be. But then after the fact so many of those same people treat the outcome as definitive proof of the superiority of one team over the other.

We basically never lose at home outside of SDSU. Since 2011, we've never lost a non conference home game. I can't even remember the last non conference home loss. We've lost 1 home playoff game out of nearly 40. We've lost 6 home games in 12 years, half to SDSU and all were 1 scores losses. The 3 losses included Carson Wentz playing a full game with a broken hand, a game we nearly won despite throwing 3 pick sixes, and a last second field goal. When you have more national championships than home losses, That is what I call boring. Nobody wants to watch games that are over at half time.

Whatever conference you join will take awhile to develop rivalries but they do come eventually.
