The only MVFC team that seems to have any kind of FBS aspirations is MSU. Most of them want to just focus on basketball it seems like.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
According to Ross Uglem on the Bison Report Show about an hour ago, Cook wants NDSU to go FBS
As for this WAC/ASUN nonsense, it's just little people yelling loudly because they see the future. FBS will never allow this to happen. You can book that …

Re: A new and better FBS thread
NDSU & Cook better get NDSU into the fuckin Mountain West or AAC ASAP. no more excuses. broker a deal, give up some concessions, heck, let us keep our local media rights, we will agree to play 2 neutral games a year in Minneapolis and Denver or Dallas or Arizona or Vegas

I'm sure the school, team, and fans will be thrilled to have 3-4 home games per year in that scenario.
That Dallas game in October featuring a 4-3 North Dakota State team with 6K fans will be very big time!

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Now this is what I would call a moonshot. If any of this WAC nonsense had a snowballs-chance-in-hell of happening, you wouldn’t hear anything about it until it was a done deal. The fact that they are chirping about it now tells me it’s extremely unlikely. I don’t blame them, though. They are all FB heavy programs looking at being stuck forever in FCS with BB and hockey schools, and I’m sure they are not happy about it
Here’s the cold hard truth kids. There is only one school in FCS right now with the ability, desire, and infrastructure to go FBS, and that’s the NDSU Bison.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
Travel for football isn't the problem with an FBS conference outside of maybe the MAC, would be no need for neutral site games. They wouldn't even be a selling point, the travel issue is when you involve non-revenue sports.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
All you need is one donor to buy a ton of tickets and then give them away with a combo meal at Taco John's or with an appetizer at Applebee's even if they never get used.

How many of the named schools meet the attendance requirement?
How many of the schools currently moving up meet the attendance requirement?

IMO this is absolutely the best chance NDSU would have for FBS if a similar coalition of schools in the MVFC and Big Sky could be put together. Heck, even joing this ASUN/WAC league wouldn't be that bad since it's football only.
Sounds like there are some hurdles to clear in terms of the feasibility of forming a new FBS conference and having it be football only but this seems promising for anyone hoping for NDSU to find an FBS landing spot.
This conference would be worse than CUSA.

At this point, we can only know that it's pretty obvious that it's *not* the Bison, since we have no desire or plan to move up.

The mystery teams sure better be worth something because otherwise that is quite the steaming pile to hook your wagon to.
And if the programs hooking up to the wagon are NDSU, SDSU, Montana, and Montana St you can stick a fork in the FCS as we know it. Good luck with it.

I’m of the opposite point of view. It’s time to let the Samfords, Sacramento States, William and Mary’s, etc. have their subdivision back. FCS will thrive without the XDSU’s being three touchdowns better than 98% of the subdivision.
As it currently sits this is not the right place for a flagship state school with 20 million plus in their annual athletic budget. Maybe 15-20 years ago, but not now. In my opinion that’s why attendance has dropped. Everyone slowly realized that it’s not a level playing field when you have way more resources than everyone else.

Honestly don't think its those 4 lining up to be in WAC/ASun.
Its not a premier FCS league, and there are many reasons their fbs bid is likely to fail.
Might not even get off the ground, there is a moratorium on new single sport conferences.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
So how is WAC/ASun theory any worse than the Great West conference that inaugurated the D1AA era? That was certainly not a premier group either at that moment but teams improve.

We've been outperforming our weight class budget wise. Colgate and Bucknell have larger football budgets.
https://thesportsarsenal.com/2021/02...ses-fcs-style/
FCS Football spending
James Madison $ 10,649,299
Montana State $ 8,709,180
Montana $ 8,620,428
Delaware $ 8,313,306
Fordham $ 7,594,200
Furman $ 7,366,155
William and Mary $ 7,073,588
Richmond $ 7,031,345
Lafayette $ 6,840,900
Villanova $ 6,765,161
Colgate $ 6,743,022

Bucknell $ 6,192,470
North Dakota State $ 6,048,728

Re: A new and better FBS thread
To be fair, NDSU is probably the only one who doesn't have to pay for stadium upgrades, turf replacements, or general maintenance.

Those numbers are influenced by tuition rates too. William and Mary is almost 50k a year for out of state, while Montana State is 28k out of state while NDSU is 15,076.
However the Montana schools are cheaper for in state. If we have any advantage, its the cheaper Minnesota tuition rate where a majority of players come from

LOL! I'm not even going to click the link.
Alabama A&M outspends NDSU in football? Come on man
Colgate can't even fully fund scholarships lol
Montana State's head coach 4 years ago was complaining how unfair NDSU's resources are to the rest of the subdivision
If these numbers are even accurate, all this shows is what a goat rope trying to break out expenses by sport. Then you have the fact we're in a City-owned stadium, etc. This is exactly why the mysterious "where are we going to come up with $20M more dollars per year if we go Mountain West" trope is unfounded.
Outside the Valley and maybe the Montana's, no one comes close to our resources. A very, very large reason why we've won 9 of the last 10 championships.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
Montana State has made a ton of renovations to their faciliites, those numbers are in their budget. Specific sport budget numbers don't mean jack squat. Yeah, we build a $50 million IPF but underfund our program, people don't be ridiculous.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
I will go on record that this year's playoffs is infinitely more interesting to me than waiting to play in some random bowl game in the middle of next week.

I’ve said this before, if NDSU owned and operated the Fargodome, our football budget would be in line with JMU on the list above. This list is not comparing apples to apples.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Didn't know where to post this but apparently Mississippi St Coach Mike Leach had a medical emergency today and it is serious. Rumors on Twitter making it sound bad.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
Mike leach is a national treasure. Hope he's ok.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
Sounds like Leach has been transitioned to comfort care and will likely pass in the coming hours.
Guy is a national treasure and an offensive genius. Real shame.

... well we could trade opponents and channel
55 South Dakota State AA = 72.69 12 1 -or-
73 Montana State AA = 68.49 12 1
2pm on ABC
For
108 North Texas A = 62.10 7 6
8pm on ESPN

Not bad for the #2 team in the Mountain West. Who already played the #48 team in sagarin on Fox in the MW championship, and got half of their season on FS1, ESPN or better.
Now do the MW champ: Looks like they're playing #33 Washington State. in Los Angeles. on ABC. on a Saturday. (Unless I'm missing something we're going to get crushed competing with Week 18 NFL games on Sunday afternoon?)
Pretty decent for a couple of 9-4 teams.

actually a 12/7 bowl game even in Frisco would draw less than 5k Bison fans.

"decent" is a perfect term. And 2 bowl games that generate zero excitement, exhibitions.
