I am really pleased with the group of linebackers coming in. Forbes should help immediately and having him in spring ball is immense. Emmanuel and Olson at the Mike and Will spots look VERY promising. Carter and Gefroh will likely compete at the Sam spot.

Re: 2010 Recruiting
There has been talk here (CaBisonFan and others) about the desirability of recruiting more ATHLETES, many of whom were QBs in high school, who can play other positions. The Bison are making a step in that direction this year by recruiting the likes of Christian Dudzik and Travis Beck. The big prize may still be out there, because Bison fans "there is another."

Thats what we like to hear!!!!! A few surprises to put the icing on the cake of this recruiting class.

Re: 2010 Recruiting
Well, Pierre turned out pretty well for a QB playing the CB position last year. I'll take another guy like that in a second.
Any more hints? (State?, Position?, decision time?)

I remember a recent great Bison that is currently starting in the NFL right now that was an option QB in HS...

Bingo! Danny Eaves, Kyle Belmont, and Brendan Pierre are all current members of the Bison secondary who played QB in high school..but the Herd hasn't had a big physical safety since the graduation of Craig Dahl.

Re: 2010: Recruiting Summary
Marlins just posted on SiouxSports that Aaron Esala committed to UM-Duluth.
Also, Kyle Costigan has committed to Wisconsin.

The Bison had offers accepted by o-linemen they had higher than Esala on their board. They liked Esala too, but there is only so much scholarship money. This is an excellent get for UMD.

Re: 2010: Recruiting Summary
Like I said on multiple threads, we were not going to sign Esala. But, I absolutely cannot believe that UND did not get this kid. We liked Esala at our camp, but we signed the top 5 kids we looked at on the O line. It was the best O Line camp we have ever conducted. It becomes a numbers game, and we can't take every kid, that would have been 6 kids on the O line in one year. Kids are really drawn into what Coach Fuchs can do with an offensive line. He has passion for the line and for NDSU. Kids see that. I am really happy this kid went to UMD as I knew we were off him. I just can't understand why UND is losing every single regional battle. These are kids they need to get. He will have a great career at UMD. Congrats to their staff on getting this kid.

What a great endorsement for a position coach!

Re: 2010: Recruiting Summary
so let me get this straight. he doesnt get a full ride at ndsu offerred, so he takes UMD over all the other regional schools. good for him, im impressed.
-
Re: 2010: Recruiting Summary
I see SS.com is dancing about losing a kid to their local D2 sister school. They just love thinking this kid had a full ride from NDSU and don't understand that the kid is good, but not good enough for this recruiting class. We already have 5 scholarship O lineman in one class. Hello, how many do you want us to sign. As a previously involved poster stated, this kid was begging for an offer in the summer at our camp. It didn't come and we signed the top 5 kids from that camp. Call it lucky, it just worked out that way. The "new way" we recruited this year worked out very well, especially at the O Line position. We were able to identify kids on junior film, get them into camp, "get our hands on them" as coaches would say and figure out if they can play at this level. I hope Esala has a fantastic career, I have heard he is very talented. Many other years, he is probably a Bison. I still can't believe he didn't take a full ride to UND, but it sounds like he felt comfortable at UMD.

A highlight video and scouting report on Zach Vraa from ESPN:

Bottom line: perfect fit for NDSU!

Re: 2010: Recruiting Summary
It is ridiculous, but they talked smack when they signed all of the players we asked to walk-on to our basketball team so I expect it.
I think he is a fine recruit, I just wouldn't take him over who have verbaled and really I don't think we need six OL in this class. I want Vraa, I want a kicker, I want another JUCO on the defensive of the ball. There are higher priorities.

I want a safety who will knock somebody out so I don't have to watch opponents' receivers running through the middle of the d**n field untouched over and over again..

und fans are so hyprocritical they make fun of us for "offering" a kid (which we didnt) that choose umd over us, yet they offered the kid. hello he turned down UND... makes no sense

That should be UND's new nickname. The "Hypocrites"...because that's exactly what they are.

Yeah, no chit. As a former safety, it made my mouth water seeing a receiver running across the middle. It made me laugh if he did it again after I knocked his mouth guard out the first time. It was the pretty much the only reason I liked the Cover 2 scheme. I don't know how you can be a safety and not want to do this every play.
-
Re: 2010: Recruiting Summary
I think there are few good safety prospects, one already playing, and two coming in that really have me intrigued. The one playing, Bobby Ollman, and Dudzik and Heagle coming in. Cant comment on the kid coming in from Mankato...don't know if anyone has seen him play.
-
Re: 2010: Recruiting Summary
How about a physical running back? I see Antaries Daniels on the interest list, is there any other rb's we are looking at. I know we are stacked at this polition, but we will graduate 2 of these players in the same year. I just don't want us to be scrambling for depth there in 2 years.

NDSU did offer Esala a scholarship....granted it was only a partial offer, but they did indeed offer.
I'm not sure if Esala's offer from UND was a full-ride or only a partial offer. He never specifically told me one way or the other.

Re: 2010: Recruiting Summary
Great job Marlins, you have a great site.
A guy on SS.com finally has it figure out. UND plays in a crappy conference without an autobid to the playoffs. The elephant in the room in the eyes of the recruit. NDSU isn't going to win every battle, but they win most in the region for sure. Nobody can dispute that argument.
Here is to hoping Zach Vraa is in this class. He would be the icing on the cake for me. He is a difference maker at the WR spot. Like has been mentioned by our staff and also by alot of people on this board, he reminds people of Heck. His hands are amazing. Vraa and Gebhart from Sioux Falls would be an absolutely nuts WR class for the Bison. (Sidenote: Gebhart is a classic case of why NDSU's "strategy" of getting these kids on campus early, seeing them, and getting their verbal early is the way to go). SDSU is now finally bringing in 40 kids in 4 different waves this month. I just don't see how that is showing the individual love that some of these kids want/need.
Of course SDSU fans are selling eachother on the fact that they don't have enough staff to recruit during the year, got into the playoffs and now are starting to get kids in. You can't tell me they didn't want Gebhart, the #1 ranked rivals WR in our zone. Kid was in their backyard and is a Bison. Can't wait for him.

Re: 2010 Recruiting
Vraa is a heck of a WR! ;)

SDSU isn't looking for kids "who need individual love". They are looking for team players.
Plus, their "individual want/need" was handled when our coaches have been out on the road for the past month and they stop and meet with the player/family/coach. Or, the dozens of texts and phone calls from the past 4 months. These aren't players that have just nilly/willy been chosen to come up quick for a visit. The coaching staff has been focusing on these players for 4 + months.

Re: 2010: Recruiting Summary
Final point, then time for the hoops game, but I think we should be pretty happy/thankful for our summer camp. We have the opportunity to actually see these kids work. See how they compete against other kids at their position, see them move, etc. Always better to determine them in person vs film. A campus visit in January doesn't show you much more than how they look in their letterman's coat. Plus, it is -21 degrees at that time. I am glad we are doing all of this work early.

If SDSU fans are selling each other that they don't have a full staff to recruit with, that is B.S., another Florida St. example here, but they have a Top 10 National class with 5 coaches recruiting, the head coach interviewing and hiring his staff, and there was bowl game prep and practice in there as well.

Re: 2010: Recruiting Summary
I had to finally register and post after browsing for the past several years. I enjoy the site and much of the usefull information.
I couldn't agree more with Burgundy, SDBison and others on the recruiting front. If the transition to DI has shown SDSU anything, it is to mirror the Bison in recruiting. You guys have blown our doors off and are the litmus test for recruiting in the midwest, if not the nation. I have been extremely envious of each and every class you have been able to sign since the transition. I mean let's be honest, it is a miracle we have beat you juggernauts three in a row and 4 out of the last 5. WOW, where do we get off doing that to the Bison. Don't we know about you're D2 tradition? The temerity of the Jacks just blows me away. I mean, how many D2 championships do you all have? Where does the FCS committee get off not automatically putting you into the playoffs every year? Utterly ridiculous. After all, NDSU is in Fargo (a city without rival), has gold plated toilets and reams of velvet for players to wipe their backsides.
Each night before I lay my head down, I pray that we can come up to the level of NDSU in recruiting. Until that unimaginable day happens, I will have to relegate myself to the shallow victory of actually winning on the field with sub-Bison players. But I know it is only a matter of time before tradition and facilities reasserts its preeminence. I am patiently waiting for Army to do the same.
