To be honest no other conference is really an option so we better have our best effort out there.
Your administration has time to craft a winning pitch if they choose to do so. I don't believe the MW would add you or anyone else until the current tv deal expires..It runs through 2026 but I believe new members would not be playing in the MW until Fall 2027. To be certain, some MW programs could leave before then. However, the MW tv deals with CBS and Fox are not based upon who is in the MW. It is based upon available PST and MST viewing windows. Your excellent football prowess and brand would neither hurt or help your chances.
But..If the future for the MW is streaming through Amazon or Apple etc ..They wouldn't care what time of the day or night games are played. That does help your chances..

I will say when games are played and how they are to be viewed would be a pretty large step down from our current set up. Right now we play whenever we want and pretty much every football, men’s and women’s basketball and even some baseball/softball games are on ESPN+. One centralized location for everything, no fighting with broadcast rights, and we can play when we choose. As a transplant NDSU fan living in Texas, I couldn’t ask for anything better.
Watching Mountain West games on their horrible website setup isn’t a way forward and then to boot half the times we play away at Mountain West opponents in basketball the games not even on there. What’s your experience with Nevada? Is there a local affiliate that plays the game? If a Nevada fan is living on the east coast is there a way for them to watch every game?
There are times I wonder if having more central time zone fan bases would help the west coast conferences? At some point you want to spread your games throughout the day? No? Or is the thought that we’d start competing with other conferences on the same channels?
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
All Nevada's games were televised this season. There is a local sports news and broadcasting provider in Reno. It is called Nevada Sports Network. They have a local tv station as well as streaming. They do it for other sports including women's sports. They also broadcast AAA baseball home games for the Reno Aces..
It should be noted that the CBS and Fox tv deals only cover conference games. They are not providers for for non conference games. The MW web site streams up what they can but by picking up available feeds from other providers..My guess is there wasn't an available feed for your basketball game.
I have no complaints about the tv deals other than I wish they were for about 10 times more lucrative. :)

I'm watching Nevada vs. NDSU WBB right now via the free Roku app as suggested by tcbison in another thread. Works really well.

Low attendance for first round games over thanksgiving weekend shouldn’t be surprising either. I saw some empty FBS stadiums this weekend outside the big P5 games.

All the podunk FBS bowls with 5-7 and 6-6 teams battling it out probably have less attendance unless the sponsor buys a bunch of tickets and gives them out for free.

But, yet, that’s where we will be absent a measured approach to FBS.
And I’ll say it again—>MWC is not where we want to be, absent them and MAC converging. We do not want nor can we manage the late games/travel. Fuck, even UND figured that out with Big Sky. And, recall, please, the majority here saying our invite to MVFC and declining Big Sky invite was a blessing in disguise, given travel and game times.
People have short memories, which coincides with my position that they/the population in general, are/is getting dumber.

So, just checking, do you consider yourself to be a member of the set “population in general?”

NDSU could be a great story in the FBS NDSU could be that Fanbase that brings 15,000-20,000 to any bowl game and bowls & conferences would want that!

Are you suggesting MAC is more desirable than MWC?
Have a hard time seeing that. Far better programs and money in the MWC.

No, but I do for those who ask that question … and my Rez rescue dog, although she’s doesn’t have access to the internet like “people in general” do, so she has that going for her.

Sorry, just trying to follow the train of thought ... you also said "MWC is not where we want to be"
So, if they don't converge, what conference would be more desirable in your view?
Not sure any are perfect outside the P5

AAC. We do not fit in a western time zone conference.
MWC/Mac joinder isn’t gonna happen, but, if it did, that would be a better fit for us, absent other alternatives. Just do the math there.
We need to be in central/eastern time zone FBS conference given our isolated geography and majority of our fan base.

I think this gives the Bison the best chance to be successful. It could impact recruiting as well. Could be harder to recruit Wisconsin, Iowa, Missouri, Omaha, if ask the road games are that far away. If anyone could do it, the Bison could, and I don't think they should turn down an opportunity in the MWC. But something in Central and Eastern time zone would be better.

This is a big thing that is overlooked when talking about the MWC. Hard to recruit in our traditional areas to then play teams out west. Would we want to change where we recruit ? Might be a hard sell for a Wisconsin kid to only play out west. The Montana’s want nothing to do with a NCC conference ever again because they want to recruit west and play out west.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
why would we change our recruiting if NDSU is in the Mountain West??
We will get even BETTER Recruits in our Upper Midwest Footprint........ wtf!!

You don't think the recruiting will change at all? Lol.
Ya sure. Fuck MN, K State, Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, Iowa State, etc. They're all coming to Fargo for 10 PM games.

And difficult to convince kids our west to come to Fargo IMO. See how this works? It doesn’t for us.

I think there's a plausible argument in which a scenario could exist that moving from FCS to FBS becomes more difficult in the future, not less. In this scenario, patience may not be a virtue. It's impossible for any of us to speak in absolutes at this point given the state of flux that the college football landscape is currently in. As a fan, we don't have much, if any, influence on what happens in those aspects. In the meantime, fans can control their decisions about how much they are willing to invest in NDSU Athletics. The Athletic Department leadership will need to be very aggressive in finding ways to keep as many fans engaged and investing as possible. The trends of that engagement and investment over the past 5 or so years seem to be a bit of a mixed bag. Attendance is certainly down, however, it seems like Teammakers and fundraising for IPF/facilities haven't seemed to have been affected so far. Just like everyone here, I truly just want to see the University and the Athletic Department build on the momentum that was gained from the move to D1 and not take a step backwards. Patience in conference affiliation may be a virtue. Patience in terms of finding ways to combat the trend in attendance and enthusiasm seems less beneficial because I believe if it continues it is only a matter of time before it does affect Teammakers and fundraising.

That’s one team in MWC and happens to be the closest to us. Keep going with the other teams and see where things end.
Also, and to assist in your reading comprehension, it’s not about fans as much as the toll it would take on players and coaches. Even your favorite, former BSC team figured that out.

I think there are pros and cons to both the AAC and MWC. In terms of purely game times and recruiting footprint, I would prefer an AAC invite. I believe that the schools in the MWC would be more attractive to the fanbase (especially with UCF, Cincinnati & Houston leaving the AAC). That being said, the attractiveness to the fanbase would likely be muted by the later game times that we would likely encounter. MN Wild fans hated being grouped with the west coast teams previously because of all of the 9pm starts for road games. It really affected viewership/ratings for Fox Sports North at the time. The schools in the MWC also seem to be more "peer institutions" academically to NDSU which I think is an upside. It's hard to speak in absolutes about anything but I don't think there is any scenario in which the MWC and the MAC merge or join in any way. If the MAC didn't want to keep UMASS and doesn't want to add NDSU/SDSU in part because of the travel, it seems highly unlikely that they would ever take on the additional travel associated with joining with the MWC. If NDSU received an invite from either the AAC or the MWC, I think they should accept. If they don't, criticism would be warranted.

Is there a possibility we could get an invite to the AAC?

They'll be at 14 schools when they take the 6 schools leaving C-USA. I think that's why they haven't been talked about as much here because it seems less likely that they will add compared to the possibility of the MWC adding if SDSU or Boise or both leave. The AAC also has the option of poaching more from C-USA if they need to and those C-USA schools are a.) already FBS and b.) within their footprint.

The median athletic budget in the AAC is 50% more than the Mountain West...
They are more stable, have a much higher academic profile, are just as far or farther, and have about 100x more options for candidates than the Mountain West.
Conversely, it's probably the only conference that right now I could see being able to dole out a football-only invite.

This makes me feel dirty, but he's technically right on this point(subsidizing the FCS playoffs, not subsidizing FCS in general like he followed up with).
- As a whole, the FCS playoffs lose money for the NCAA(because the NCAA has to play for teams' travel, officials, Frisco rental, etc.).
- Playoff games at NDSU make money for the NCAA(because those games more than pay for the NCAA expenses for that game).
- Therefore, NDSU helps the NCAA lose less money for the playoff, i.e. subsidizing.
I'm going to go take a shower now.

I'm 46 and don't give 2 shits about the Wyoming, Boise State or the MWC either.
