the absolutely ZERO questions any media in town have asked Stony Brook or Cook is shameful.
NDSU has to get FBS for that CHANCE AT 1 GUARANTEED CFP SPOT

Thats beyond obvious. Even Georgia St who has had a decent team and nice stadium has a hard time drawing many fans.
Kennesaw will be somewhere around 5th tier status there.
Their coach had a big rant because the fans don't show up for games.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
One area where a move up helps Kennesaw is scheduling. The ASUN only has 6 football schools. CUSA guarantees an 8 game conference schedule with 4 home games. I would guess it is easier to schedule 4 OOC games than 7.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
I'm not sure how much of a factor this would be related to geography but family of recruits being their kid play. Kennesaw is going to be a better location for many of them to travel than Fargo. Less of an issue for P5 schools but still somewhat of an issue for G5.
It could impact recruiting and the existing schools likely want to have closer schools for their families as well. If the conference isn't already in Atlanta this also gives them a better recruiting tool for athletes in that city. It also gives the university development people a reason to have an event around their team playing in the area hosting alumni.
The other CUSA teams likely have a lot more alumni in the Atlanta area than Fargo. Plus their cost to get their staff and materials to Atlanta would be cheaper.
I have no idea how big of a factor this is but I'm sure it's a factor. It's much more than just how much it costs to travel to games for the teams. NDSU does have alumni around the country but a large percentage are closer to Fargo than any of the other MAC or MWC schools. But very few of the MAC or MWC schools will have a large alumni base in Fargo.
I still think NDSU would jump at the opportunity to get into either conference and they would both seriously consider NDSU. But they have to decide to expand or replace first.

Agree with most of these thoughts. There's a lot of reasons that geography is significant.
Its very clear the shuffling is not complete yet with PAC/B1G/B12 and it is highly likely to cascade down to MWC.
PAC is said to be looking at expansion after their media deal completes, and then they will likely target a few MWC schools.
The path to an opening seems to be underway. It's just not an instant thing, and may take a year or two to fully develop.

The media doesn't need to ask shit. They'll get the same answers as usual.
But the guaranteed playoff spot talk always makes me giggle.

Yeah some of us have been told over and over and over that geography doesn't matter. Welp....here we are. Roll Kennesaw yeehaw.

The rumor de jour is that the Pac 10 is looking to San Diego State and SMU for expansion. That would open a slot in the AAC who would happily take you "football only". You are going to have to travel a long way whichever way you go but the AAC is by far the better option for you. Several teams in the central time zone, bigger tv deal, better competition, and it is an ESPN conference.

Not sure what this is based on but, Yes please!

They took Navy..The Big East took SDSU and Boise as football only. Why not NDSU? You should aim high..

Re: A new and better FBS thread
I'd love to see men's basketball profile elevated with a move to a higher conference, but if the opportunity to move up with a football only invite to a conference like the AAC ever did become available, that would present NDSU with a compelling option for their premiere sport while containing costs for the rest of the programs in the summit.

If this drops, there will certainly be fallout.

Gonna have to. Basketball is irrelevant (minus a couple occurrences of success).

So join Air Force? I feel like Navy is a bit of a unique situation.
However, would be pretty happy with either AAC or MWC.
I have a feeling PAC is going to take more than 2 schools in the end.
Oregon/Washington could go B1G and there's constant rumors of 2-4 to the B12 also.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
I’m not sure I understand how people can think basketball is irrelevant while simultaneously thinking that what we need to do is put our football team in exactly the same circumstance.

We'd have to take that. Even if it meant leaving the others behind. Could always turn into a full invite or something too, who knows.

Preach brother. The goal shouldn't be "go where we can win championships." It should be (like Olympic sports) "go where we can maximize our potential."

Re: A new and better FBS thread
JMU is having a great season. But, no conference options for the Bison. That's the deal killer.

I would assume there will be conference options for the Bison in the next two years, but for the time being I will enjoy FCS

That's great. Keeps pressure on our decision-makers to... make some decisions. We are talking about Western Illinois-level athletic departments here...

Exactly why the NCAA transformation committee should slam the door on CUSA. They are calling up un-worthy FCS schools simply to survive under the regional vision of their commish. That should not be allowed because it does nothing to elevate FBS. Total BS and it has nothing to do with ML

I just realized that this is how SDSU football must feel every year. Always the bridesmaid, never the bride.
We should've made the push 5-6 years ago. At least that's when the meter switched over for me. We've been waiting for "the right situation" to open up for at least that long. We've always said we're just one realignment cascade away, "wait for the split", etc. Boy are we going to be happy campers when Boise and SDSU get gobbled up and the MW invites the Montanas and leaves us out to dry. At this rate we'll watch Missouri State, SIU, Ill State, Indiana State all move on to greener pastures without us.
And all we get is radio silence...

1) "unworthiness" is a subjective opinion
2) Regional visions dominate all conference visions, except the B10 apparently
If they do what you're asking there's about a 0% hope for any situation in which we bring together a Big Sky/MVFC hybrid to the FBS. And that appears to be our best hope at this point.

Or the Big 12.
Or the SEC.
Or the MWC.

"FBS worthiness" should be quantitatively defined by the NCAA transformation committee. At least it would be if I were in charge
Geography is only an issue as long as NDSU doesn’t have an invite, and there is considerable movement about to occur above us …
I just don’t get why you guys rail on ML all the time about this. If anything, it was on Bresciani, who you guys all apparently think could do no wrong ...
Other than getting NDSU ready for a potential move, this isn’t the ADs jurisdiction

The conference and division home for the athletic department isn’t in the jurisdiction of the director of athletics? Interesting take on how our university is run.
I didn’t mention ML, lakes did. I understand who wears the pants and owns the final decision. But he absolutely does so with counsel from the director of athletics, and others.
Otherwise why is McFeely interviewing Matt every 6 months about FBS? Why is he fielding a question about FBS every week on Bison 1660? Why is he saying that he’s watching and waiting by the phone if it rings?

Conference affiliation is decided by presidents. Invites are secured and accepted by presidents, and Cook was the one who was quoted in the bolded
You guys should give it a fucking rest. This is probably the biggest week in NDSU FB history and FBS will sort itself out soon enough

We're saying the same thing. President makes the final decision. There's obviously a lot of input from the person running the athletic department. Our move to D1 was not ever just seen as Chapman's decision, for instance. GT got a ton of credit and rightfully so. Matt Larsen has said the same thing that Cook has on the topic.
There is no way this week is the biggest week in NDSU FB history. That is unless that little phone does end up ringing

Theres no surprise here. It has been Tarleton, SFA, UCA, EKU in the mix for a while.
Some folks just don't understand the revenue stream for CUSA is so low that they desperately need to cut travel costs.
They also think they are following the SBC model of forming nearby rivalries, albeit with much crappier teams.
CUSA is basically the fbs version of Southland/Big South/ASun.
Competition level wise though it may be closer to NEC level football in fbs.

Ok, hyperbole acknowledged, but it is a damn big game
Lots on the line here. Don't kid yourself
One real rival
Marker absent from ND for a while now
People calling out the program for a number reasons, real or imagined
National attention for 1 vs 2
Big playoff implications
I've been trying to turn this into more of a general FBS thread but it keeps coming back to the elephant in the room and nothing is going to happen until after the season
