Very true, but for fbs conferences, sometimes they care more about location, market, and potential.
Not saying that's smart, its just reality. CUSA and AAC in particular focus on the market and location.
That's why Charlotte got an AAC invite, and schools like Tulane and Temple are there too.
None of those schools are particularly good at football or pack the stadium on gameday.

well LOOK AT THAT
James Madison is ranked No. 25 in the AP Poll, just five games into their FBS experience. Incredible.

Ideally they would care about the fanbase and winning.
Unfortunately, it's very clear that location and market potential trumps that for most G5.

Some people who think it is time for FBS now used to deride and chastise people that thought it was time a few years ago. In another year or two, with no movement on this issue and no public declaration of NDSU's intent to make the move, you'll finally see the light and, in frustration, you will be clamoring for "FBS now no matter what". But you will likely have no self-awareness to remember this fan board conversation or prediction. And more importantly, your clamoring then will be as effective as my clamoring now. Which is to say, not effective at all.
We are in a better position now for FBS than in 2012. It’s not like we turned down past offers and now none will ever come, a conference invite has never been offered back then or now. We are not getting one for the foreseeable future and we can’t do anything about it! It’s out of our control. FNS independent would be program suicide!

More people might care about Kenesaw if they were FBS! FCS doesn’t register in the SEC foot print!

I think just winning the summit isn't enough to spark a fanbase that is used to FCS titles.
We need to get a NCAA win or two that isn't seen as a play in game.
Beat a name like Duke, UNC, Michigan, Oregon, Arizona, etc and people would notice.
Get to the sweet 16 and people could get excited.

Football program has not beat anyone of that caliber

Honestly, making sure the revenue sports can support the other sports and create more brand awareness member institutions. The latter will be more important and enrollment continues to slide. The current public university financial model does not work with declining student population. Every out of state kid you can get paying out of state rates is Yukon Gold.

We got a win against a very prominent school in the Dance.
If the bar is being a Sweet 16 type team, then fans are being objectively unreasonable.

That's true, the problem is people forget what happened 8 years ago.
We need a bit more consistency of getting to the tourney and winning more of those games. With enough investment, it should be possible to dominate the Summit every year.
Need consistent appearances, and more frequent wins in the tourney. If we can get above 0.500 in NCAA tourney that would help also.
Reaching the sweet 16 is a tough, but not impossible goal. Just doing it once would get people very excited.

Knowing we have a chance to do it every Year should get people off their couches to come support our team. Honestly I enjoyed our big dance games as much as any national title and I’m not a BB guy….. not sure why people only support football

Part of this is our football team is seen as far more successful.
Sagarin has basketball at #152, NET has us at #162.
Meanwhile Sagarin has football at #77 in a down year so far.
If we were in the Sagarin/NET top 50-80 I think people would notice.
We would be having some impressive wins.
I do think we should all support the team. Basketball has more upside than FCS football.
Even sweet 16 would be huge and garner national attention.
Its hard to compare the two sports, but I think a sweet 16 might be like a FCS championship to me.

And the other part of it is that football has 50 years of incredible history and tradition. Meanwhile basketball has the Tim Miles and Saul Phillips eras.
Making the Sweet 16 would be equal to a handful of FCS championships. Winning the FCS is somewhere close to winning the NIT in my book. Probably less.

If Conference USA truly cared about market and location, then we would not have added Sam Houston or Jacksonville State or even New Mexico State or Liberty. You can't deliver a market if your brand isn't appealing. It took losing FoxSports as our primary media rights carrier to realize that, and we've spent the last decade in college football purgatory because our leaders added, who FoxSports wanted instead of who the stronger brands were.

Welcome to the board. You say 'we' when referring to CUSA. Who's your team?
Edit: Nevermind. Just figured it out. You're the commissioner of CUSA who came her to issue a formal invitation. Well played.

Welcome, I'm seeing many cusa/mwc/aac fans becoming more interested in NDSU and our plans. .

He's talking about the fact that even with the 40,000 students and millions of people within a 30 minute drive of their stadium on Saturday, only 4,000 found themselves inside their stadium. Hell their stadium holds 8,000 and they couldn't even sell out their home opener. Looking at those numbers, MSUM honestly isn't a terrible comparison.
I'm somewhat of a contrarian, I'm not an expert, and I'm undoubtedly biased. But if I'm looking into markets and marketing that tells me that the product STINKS and that no one cares about it. There is zero brand loyalty to Kennesaw State. I would guess there are more people that drive an hour-plus to Fargo for NDSU games than were at the last Kennesaw game. THAT is brand loyalty. Those are the eyeballs you are after.

You have to remember that their commish was all big on conference regionalization. That’s all she cares about. Not at all surprised by who she's going with

Or people just find football more entertaining. This isn't really a trend unique to NDSU.

It doesn't work for UAB as noted on this page with highlights showing a nearly empty stadium. https://www.tidefans.com/forums/thre...ndance.306508/
Plus, I can't see very many kids in Georgia deciding to become a Kennesaw State fan over Georgia because they are both FBS and therefore equal. NDSU in any FBS conference will draw more viewers because they aren't competing with the SEC in their backyard.

LOL, 99.9% sure this is a Louisiana Tech fan, and not Judy.

It tends to be the old "football first" vs "basketball first" thing.
Not many schools outside the P5 are really great at both.
Possibly Cincinnati and Houston are exceptions, but they are both P5 soon.
Boise St, Colorado St, and Wyoming have good NET score also.
Basically a few AAC and MWC teams from the G5

Not Commissioner MacLeod? 100% correct.
Louisiana Tech fan? 10% correct (The other 90% being dispersed evenly with FIU, Jacksonville State, Liberty, Middle Tennessee, New Mexico State, Sam Houston, UTEP, Western Kentucky, and Kennesaw). 😊

One more thing. I'm more than just a "fan" of those schools. My connections run deeper than that.

So two questions:
1) do you feel your tweets represent the position of CUSA?
2) if not geography, why Kennesaw?

The state of Georgia is very lucrative for high school and college sports. Kennesaw is in a rapid growing area of the state in Cobb County representing about 750,000 residents. Would be the 3rd largest undergrad school in the new Conference USA. Would allow a more reasonable operation in split divisions that would lessen travel costs to all institutions especially in non-football sports while contributing other non-football sports that we need in order to keep our AQ bids. The most important reason is that we are negotiating a new media rights deal starting next season with one of the top contributors in the business, and they see Kennesaw as an asset to their portfolio.

Right, but that’s why we’re bewildered. How any media deal is improved by their inclusion is beyond me. Maybe it’s the fact that CUSA has no media deal?
I mean their brand is so strong you didn’t even spell it right lol. I asked one of my coworkers who went to Georgia Tech if he’d ever heard of them? Nope.
