NDSU just rolled a #285 from US News. At least it's not last in the Dakotas and better than the bottom of the MWC (Boise State).

Pipe dream would be TCU, Baylor, Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa State, SDSU, NDSU, Wichita State kind of staying along that I-29/I-35 corridor.

I think this has a chance of happening too but they need to get to FBS first and foremost that's why I'd be willing to go Indy at this point if need be just to have a seat at the table. The Power 5 is trying to get to 16 teams per conference. The B1G and SEC are there. The ACC needs 1. The B12 is going to need at least 4 more schools at some point. The PAC 12 will need 6. Gotta get our foot in the door to make it happen!

I would also argue that the biggest reason to add UConn and UMass would be their basketball program not their football. That's likely why CUSA didn't want them for football only.

Forbes?
Carnegie over-rates uncompetitive (no bidding) research dollars. AAU is the gold-standard club to shoot for as they look at competitive and non-competitive bid research dollars.

I’m at full speed now. Thanks for asking. Just ran 3 miles this AM, along with 50 pull ups and 120 situps …
It’s not a .com, so it reflects the actual data you would find in journal citation reports etc. ... as opposed to lobbying
I find it amusing that you come on to our board to throw shit at the fact that NDSU is R1 and you are not. I would say that’s a reflection on you, not me

Like...you mean the entire history of the NCAAs? Yeah we're the dumb one's taper.
Even though we are for FBS...just the right fit.
But we are "hoople." Funny which side the derogatory bullshit comes from isn't it.

Nope, I really don't think the conferences will change that view on all sports membership, but would love to be proven wrong. Some of them (AAC and CUSA) like to brag about their basketball and care about that also. MAC to a lesser degree. And I think even the football centric SBC will be hesitant to add someone who only brings competition for that CFP bid. This might make a move anywhere harder, but especially if they aren't backfilling a vacancy.
The thing to remember here is you are also asking a conference like CUSA to split their CFP payout (all conferences get a slice) more ways, thus asking them to take a paycut on one of their few revenue sources. Probably less significant with a conference that has a good media deal.

It is interesting that while endorsing staying with the NCAA, they pointed to not breaking the other sports away from FB. But $$ talks. We'll see. They have a bit left to sort out yet ...

Re: A new and better FBS thread
If the MWC or MAC offers, I don't give a single damn if we have travel partner but the FCS forever crew will be clinging to the ambitionless SDSU if that happens.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
this is fucking ridiculous
in 2024 the CFP WILL TAKE A G5
NDSU NEEDS TO BE IN A G5 IN 2 YEARS.
OR FIRE MATT LARSON/DAVID COOK ON THE SPOT

Actually clinging to the "if the MWC or MAC offers" because as of right now, they literally have zero reason too.

2024. That's CUSA then. And there's not a CUSA team that'll be near that playoff spot. Which - if that's what NDSU needs to do - so be it.
What's going down with all the other NDSU sports when that happens. I guess I don't care, just curious.

There’s not a “crowd” saying let’s take Hawaii’s spot. There is me pointing out that they are a shitty FB program and I don’t know what the hell they’re doing in the Mountain West.
I have stated that we’re not going to take hawaiis spot. Don’t put words in peoples mouths…

It is very unlikely that any member would get kicked out of the conference. Things get decided by academics. Football prowess is nice but they have lots of things to value besides sports.
Having Hawaii in the conference does not impact the other schools financially. Only 4 MW schools per season fly out there for football and they are subsidized to do so. Hawaii makes it work for them because they have their own tv network that pays them along with what they get from the MW.
Conference commissioners don’t make executive decisions without approval of the presidents. But they do heavily influence the direction of the conference when it comes to media contracts, vision for the future, etc. Commissioners have important jobs and they get paid and blamed on the trajectory of the conference under their direction. Look at the P12, B12, B10 and SEC. Their commissioners are household names. Craig Thompson was another because of his tenure.
I’ll caveat what I say because certain folks love twisting words and reading things that aren’t there: I don’t expect a major change. But the conference has a new leader for the first time in almost 30 years. There will be some change, albeit likely subtle and nuanced.
I would guess that a major bullet point for the next commissioner will be trying to position the mountain west to make the CFP. There is one school sitting out there that can help with that immediately.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
Thompson can advise and does..However, they executive committee, which changes every year, makes recommendations that they bring to a vote to all the presidents. Thompson acts as the conference spokesperson with tv negotiations, NCAA matters etc but he only takes positions voted on by the presidents. A new commissioner might seek more powers but it seems unlikely that would be granted.
Thompson has been the commissioner for 23 years but before that he was the Sun Belt commissioner for 8 years. I don't know how attractive this job will be but I would guess we will likely hire someone who has not been a commissioner before. Just a hunch..I think the new hire could well be a woman.
Anyhoo, in regards to NDSU, nothing really changes. If the presidents want you, they will invite you.
Under a scenario where the conference loses a couple of members and wishes to back fill, they would likely look to all sports applicants first because they would be losing all sports members.
I have exactly no idea how that affects your chances one way or the other..

Re: A new and better FBS thread
this NDSU / ARIZONA matchup was an opportunity for our AD and PRESIDENT to ACT like a FBS program and put some feelers out there, make some calls.
SHIT I would of invited some mountain west presidents to come witness a NDSU fan takeover and show that NDSU could bring 10,000 fans to a Boise St, Wyoming, Air Force, Colorado State game on a random saturday.
with the NEW CFP G5 PLAYOFF SPOT OPENING UP IN 2 YEARS NDSU HAS TO BE IN THAT PERIOD!

I don't know how to break this news to you but they know fully god damn well who NDSU is and what they bring to the table. Saturday will be nothing new to anyone.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
In the 2021-22 realignment, 16 out of 25 football conferences had changes. Just 3 of those ended up with an odd number of teams.
ASUN with 5 who thought they had 6 but is actively looking for another after JSU left and is currently in a scheduling alliance with the WAC.
CAA which who knows what they're doing with 15.
CUSA with 9 and anybody who could fog a mirror.
EVERYONE else took an even number. If we want to go MWC or MAC, who will be the other team to keep an even number for scheduling purposes?
Sure, CUSA needs just 1, but holy hell no. The current CUSA is awful and most definitely a step down.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
After this season, the MW will no longer have divisions or a need for an even number.

Is it though? I hear ya that CUSA isn’t as attractive as the MWC or MAC but to talk in absolutes like our current situation in the MVFC/Summit is far and away superior seems a bit naive to me. The MVFC/Summit is a low major situation. CUSA is as well but it may provide an easier path to a true mid major conference vs. the current MVFC/Summit. I’ll give you that the MVFC is more stable, the Summit is not really. It’s more stable than it’s been because of the Dakota 4 but outside of that it’s not.

And yet you can never seem to offer an argument otherwise. Aside from your sig of FBS or Bust, where Bust means the destruction of NDSU athletics no matter the cost.

That’s a bit over dramatic don’t you think? The risk of staying FCS is on par with going FBS. To act like one is demonstrably more risky than the other is ridiculous.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
Could just as easily argue staying FCS could destroy NDSU athletics. It is a completely uncompelling product that is on a massive decline that our school is charging its fanbase P5 prices to see. I can tell you right now that isn't sustainable, casual fans have basically lost interest in the program because FCS offers absolutely nothing to get excited for.
