Re: A new and better FBS thread
I pointed this out in the past but I think it's important to bring up again.
NDSU FB's highest attended game was against non-scholarship Butler. Nearly twice the previous attendance record.
2019 WBB(most recent non-covid season) had several FBS schools come to Fargo. Northern Ill, Iowa St, Wyoming, Wisconsin. Attendance for these averaged less than half that of SDSU or UND.
The idea that "big names" will automatically solve our attendance problems is simply not supported by history.
We need regional partners. It is not possible to think otherwise.

100% you need regional rivals, absolutely agree.
NDSU and SDSU join the MWC at the same time, the first game I’m looking for is the SDSU game.
Big hockey fun myself (but hockey). Losing regional rivalries demolished the Gophers program. They are on the rebound with a new coach now…but it’s been a decade and attendance is still attempting to bounce back.
College sports thrive on regional rivalries. Exceptions are rare.

Women’s basketball isn’t driving anything in the athletic department, haven’t been for 20 years. Not sure why you keep bringing up WBB attendance. Even then, I would bet my bottom dollar that overall season attendance for every sport goes up if we are in the MW with no regional partners.
It’s absolutely ideal to have SDSU with us. It’s also very unlikely that they’re coming with if we go, but if they can I’m all on board. In the past we’ve talked about how the financials would be stretched to start at NDSU. There is no school in the Midwest that can probably go if we are barely able to do it ourselves.
I’m sure we disagree on this, but I think NDSU needs FBS more than NDSU needs to be playing SDSU and UND every year. Those are are two biggest “rivals” but the rest of our conference schedules is littered with western Illinois, Omaha, UMKC, Indiana State, etc. type games. Schools that we barely share any similarities with and are not competitive in the sports we play them in.

I bring up WBB because it shows a historical fact that big name teams don't always bring fans. FB affiliate only simply isn't going to happen so we need to think about all sports. History is very clear that we need regional rivals. Maybe some people are, but I'm not willing to kill the rest of NDSU's athletic program to bump FB up a notch. Based on actual history I have absolutely no doubt that we need regional partners. If that means we don't jump this round because they're not ready then so be it. Better than the death going alone would bring.

I guess I just don’t think it’ll “kill” the athletic department. Five years ago we had one of the worst WBB teams in D1 and we had all the regional rivals we’d ever want. Look at UND. Horrific performance last year across the board. Volleyball didn’t win a game. What did MBB win like only a couple D1 games. WBB last place in a bad summit league. Again, they had all the regional rivals they could get their hands on.
To your previous point, our highest attended game ever was Butler. Not regional, no history with them. But it was something new and exciting and different. That record attendance will likely get smashed next fall with Eastern Washington game. It’s a great example of a team we share history with that isn’t geographically close to us.
I just disagree that the pulse of our athletic department should be taken on the attendance of two games each year. Look at our summit league schedule this year and then go look up Boise State’s. I’d be ecstatic for nearly every game on the docket.
Again, I think regional rivals are important and ideally we’d have at least one. But that’s on them if they’re going to make themselves ready and their inability to get there shouldn’t be holding us back.

So that should tell you that NDSU would have no trouble drawing fans to games with new teams. Butler wasn't a rival or even a close nearby team and people showed up. Of course, that doesn't fit your agenda.
And pretty soon Butler quality teams are going to be the only thing left in FCS

UCONN, Baylor, and Notre Dame could come up for WBB and nobody would go.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Baseball and softball...Both are gone for most of the season because we are in the tundra.
Cross Country, golf, track....regional rivals mean nothing.
Wrestling likely won't change conferences, unless we go to the MAC
Soccer who cares.
MBB, WBB and VB are the only sports where regional rivals comes into play. Sorry but our football program doesn't need to stay in the horseshit FCS so we can play USD, UND and SDSU in front of 500-1000 people for WBB and VB.
I would love for SDSU to come with but they have no ambition for football, they obsess over the Summit and Souix Falls tournament which is something that means absolutely nothing for our fanbase.
You want to kill the athletic department, staying in the dying FCS is what is going to accomplish that.

Couldn’t have said it better myself. Then add in the recruiting advantage we would have from being in the MW or the MAC…

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Not an FBS or nothing guy, but one of the arguments against it is a P5 school would never travel to a G5 school. I'm watching UNC play at Georgia State. Granted UNC likely has a lot of Atlanta alumni and they are playing in the former Turner Stadium here the Olympics were held. UNC does play Georgia Tech often and that's just on the other side of downtown so playing in Atlanta is not unique. Good for GSU!

just shows we are WASTING TIME AND TALENT...

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Nick Saban was so concerned about Texas AM buying players via NIL, but that paid for the team to lose to App St. at home.
He should be more concerned that his team SHOULD have lost to Texas without Texas starting QB...His 2nd worry should be the hair left on his head. Good god dude, just shave it already. Ya bald bro. Just accept it.

Never should have left FCS. They could be playing home playoff games against Sacramento St. or Elon.
Instead, they are playing Texas AM and winning.
Too bad for them!
I bet they are hating their decision.
(obviously being sarcastic, but this is Binsonville, so ya know...gotta throw that out there due to the amount of morons)

I'm sure there's some on here that either won't get the sarcasm or seriously think we'd be better off in FCS. Morons is right.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Good for app state. Easy geographical fbs move for them when they pulled the trigger.

I don't honestly believe geography means jack shit. Are there schools in FBS that are like...damn, we gotta use an extra hour of jet fuel to fly here. Hawaii is in the Mountain West. It's way farther to get there from any MWC school then it is to get to Fargo.
And market is really not a problem either. You think Wyoming has a big TV market? Or App St. for that matter? App St. is a VERY specific school with a state that has 6 other FBS Schools. They are located in Boone NC...ever heard of it? Me either.
And the population of NC is about twice that of Minnesota. Who has ONE FBS program. Imagine if MN had 3 FBS programs...the market would be much less for all of them, due to being spread out. But it works in NC I guess.
I don't buy the geography or market excuses.
I'm not saying you are saying that either. It just brought it to my mind when you mentioned geography.

MW teams receive subsidies to travel to Hawaii.
UND left the BSC because of travel expenses.
Just saying.

Ok Hawaii might be not the best example, but my point still applies. There are alot of conferences with longer flights than Fargo to Boise or Fargo to Colorado Springs or Fargo to wherever.
Sun Belt conference comes to mind...as does Pac 12.
Huntington WV, Marshall University, to fellow conference member Texas St? Pretty long flight.
And TX St and Marshall have an insanely small market. JMU to San Marcos? Even longer flight. But me thinks the people of San Marcos are not exactly pulling in viewership.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
Geography still matters in G5. The examples given are from one end to another. Similar distance from Fargo to the nearest school in these conferences. MWC is already very spread out but we are well outside the footprint. Boise to New Mexico is a pretty good hike but each school has someone within 4-5 hours. Same for West with Reno to San Diego. Fargo to Laramie is 800 miles!
Market means less at G5 but many references aren't including the market where many alumni are. For NDSU that would include Minneapolis. G5 schools don't move the needle in most of their markets.
Fargo and North Dakota are a different kind of out there. People are surprised to learn Minneapolis is about halfway from Indy to Minot. And I'm closer to my sister-in-law in Orlando than my family in Minot.
In the end, if MWC or MAC decides to expand on fairly confident NDSU will be high on either list.

The Marshall Thundering Herd beat Notre Dame today. Yes, Marshall. It wasn't too many years ago they were FCS, and after they moved up they were even in CUSA.

Marshall joined the MAC when they moved up, 25 years ago.
When they joined CUSA in 2005, it had UCF, Houston, Memphis, USM, ECU, SMU, Tulsa and Tulane.
Almost all those schools are AAC now, none are in CUSA.
The current version of CUSA struggles to beat FCS teams like Bryant and W&M. Completely different.

CUSA might give the MWC a challenge this year. Terrible start for basically the whole MWC. Two FCS ass kickings yesterday and BSU and SDSU losing to bottom feeder PAC12 teams.

Not a chance.
MWC might be having a down year, but CUSA is horrible.
Take away the teams that are leaving, and its downright ugly, even for a FCS conference.

That I agree with, would love to be in the SBC. Marshall, App St, Louisiana are legit.
But our odds are better with MAC or MWC.

For all of the CUSA haters, just remember that the Sun Belt used to be called the Sun Belch. It was by far the worst of all the FBS conferences before APP and GASO got there and helped turn it around.

If we were able to put together a group of regional schools like the Sun Belt was able to, I have to believe we could attract attention from a better conference than the current CUSA dumpster fire.

Another big part of it also was some of the sucky teams leaving the sunbelt to go to cusa.
The same teams made cusa suck. Sunbelt also kicked out Idaho and NMSU, who cusa just welcomed in.
cusa has now assembled some of the worst teams in all of fbs. It's a huge pit to dig out of.
I think the cfp expansion will only make things worse for them, as the gap with other conferences will grow.
Now if we could kick all the sucky teams out (almost all of them), you might have something.
The teams there now would be maybe the 4th or 5th best FCS conference.
